"What If" in High School - Chapter 15
Noah still looked at Kate, waiting for her to say something else.
He looked nervously at Luke, who looked concerned too.
“Can…can we go back to my house please?”
“Uh, yeah sure,” Noah said. “Let me, uh, let me get the car. Luke will you…”
“Yeah, I’ll stay here with her.”
“Thanks.”
Noah headed towards the parking lot, and was pulling the car to the front of the club, and saw Luke holding Kate as she was crying on Luke’s shoulder. Noah noticed Luke was using the same soothing motions he used on his brother Ethan, and probably making the shushing sound telling her it’s ok.
He finished pulling in and Kate got in the back seat while Luke got in and gave Noah a sorrowful smile.
Noah gave one back and looked back at Kate who was resting her head against the window, with almost no emotion left on her face, just smeared make up.
He looked at Luke again, then started the car. They drove in the silence, with the exception of a Kate sniffling a few times.
They pulled into the driveway and Noah got out of the car and went to go open Kate’s door.
Once he did, he had to catch her from falling out of the car her body was so limp.
“Whoa, are you ok,” Noah asked. He knew it was a painfully obvious answer, but he just blurted it out.
“I just…I need…I need my violin,” she said suddenly gaining strength and storming into the front door.
Noah watched her with a bit of shock considering she was a rag doll not twenty seconds ago. He looked over at Luke as Kate slammed the door shut, and they both looked confused, but headed for the house.
When they walked in, they saw Josh and Gabe on the couch. Noah could tell what they were doing before Kate stormed in, because the movie credits were rolling, but all the popcorn was left.
“Can Kate play violin,” Luke asked.
“Oh no…violin?!,” Josh asked, standing up. “What happened? She only plays that when she’s an emotional wreck!”
“Wait…I didn’t know she could play either,” Gabe said.
“She can’t. She blasts up music and plays along, but it sounds horrible. Worse than nails on a chalkboard.”
“What do we do,” Noah asked, putting his hands in his pockets.
“There’s nothing we can do now,” Josh said sitting back down and putting his head in his hands. “We just have to let her vent. What did Wyatt do?”
“He uh…he cheated on her,” Luke said for Noah.
“I knew it! That guy’s such a slime bag!”
“I think I know the type,” Noah said to Luke, trying not to smile. Luke just tapped Noah on the chest and gave him a slight grin.
Then, Noah heard what Josh was talking about earlier. He heard some angsty song come on, and then heard the sound worse than nails on a chalkboard.
“How long does this last.” Noah yelled over the noise, covering his ears.
“It depends! This one might be a while!”
Noah nodded his head towards the door and looked and Luke, and Luke nodded.
They headed out the door Noah turned around to Luke.
“This isn’t exactly how I planned this weekend.”
“I don’t think anyone could’ve planned that.”
“I just wanted us to have a good time.”
“I know, me too.”
“But that’s kind of ruined now.”
“Not entirely,” Luke said with a grin.
“Yeah, but now we have to wait until Kate’s done before we even go inside! Unless you want to lose your hearing.”
“Um, I prefer to keep it,” Luke said stepping closer to Noah who was leaning on the car.
“C’mon, let’s get inside the car. It’s a little chilly outside.”
At first, Noah automatically opened the driver’s door, the he looked over at Luke who was opening the backseat with that impish grin of his.
“Oh,” Noah blushed. “Whoops. Sorry,” he said as he closed the front door, and headed for the backseat.
“See, much better,” Luke said as Noah closed the door.
“Yeah,” Noah smiled.
“I like this. This…being close,” Luke said as he put his arm around Noah.
“What, no corny joke or yawning?”
“No, I don’t need those.”
“Oh,” Noah said rolling his eyes up and smiling.
“I can’t wait to be like this at home.”
“You mean it,” Noah asked, inches away from Luke’s face again. It gave him a flashback to their first kiss. Noah was so nervous and guarded, and now, he wanted Luke’s touch. He needed it.
“Every word,” Luke breathed on Noah’s lips.
“Good,” Noah said cupping Luke’s face.
“Mhm,” Luke mumbled as he filled in the small gap between the two.
Noah held Luke close as the two shared a kiss they had both waited for. One were they didn’t have to hide from everyone else in the school, and just get lost in the passion.
They let things get intense, and Noah felt Luke tug at the bottom of Noah’s shirt, and Noah put his hand on Luke’s and tore apart from Luke’s lips, but still close enough to feel him breathe heavily.
“Luke…I don’t think we should…you know. Not right now. And definitely not in Kate’s car.”
“Who says we had to do that? I just wanted your shirt off,” Luke said with a devilish grin.
Noah took one look at Luke, and gave into the temptation. He ripped his shirt off faster than he had ever done, and immediately put his lips back on Luke’s It was almost insane how addictive the taste and feel of his lips were.
Noah placed his hands on Luke’s waist, slightly under his shirt, and he felt a slight bump.
“Ow,” Luke said pulling back.
“Luke, I’m sorry! What…what was that?”
“I uh, I had surgery.”
“What kind?”
“Does it matter?”
“No, sorry. Just wondering.”
“It’s okay, Luke said putting his hand on Noah’s face.
“Does it hurt,” Noah asked, looking down at where he felt it.
“Well,” Luke began, lifting up his shirt so he could see the scar. “It does sometimes.”
“Does it hurt right now,” Noah said, almost touching it with his index finger, then looking up at Luke.
“No…not really. Maybe a little, but I’m fine.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
Noah looked back and forth between Luke and the scar, then gently placed his finger on it. When Luke didn’t flinch again, it made Noah feel better about touching it before .
He leaned down and gingerly kissed Luke’s scar.
“Better?”
“Lots,” Luke said with a very heavy breath before he pulled Noah back to his lips.
---------------------
Noah woke up that morning in the morning with Luke in his arms. He didn’t mean for them to spend all night in the car, it just kind of happened.
He looked down and Luke who had his head resting on Noah’s chest. Noah sat there for about ten minutes and just watched Luke sleep. He occasionally played with Luke’s bangs, but was careful not to wake him. Finally, Luke woke up on his own. Noah watched with a wide grin on his face as Luke yawned and took in his surroundings, then smiled up at Noah before resting his head again.
“Morning sleepy-head,” Noah whispered.
“Mmmorning,” Luke said half awake, but his eyes were closed.
“Hey…Luke,” Noah said nudging Luke.
“Hmm?”
“You need to get up, my arm’s asleep.”
“But you’re so comfy.”
“Thank you, but get up.”
“Fine,” Luke moaned.
Luke lifted up and Noah slid his arm out from behind Luke’s back and could start to feel the blood coming back to is arm.
“How you have you been awake,” Luke asked with a yawn.
“About ten or fifteen minutes.”
“And you just let me sleep,” Luke asked with a sleepy smile.
“Yeah.”
“Well, thanks.”
“No problem,” said Noah with a big grin on his face.
“We should probably head back in and see how Kate’s doing.”
“Probably,” Noah agreed.
The two got out of the car and started to walk back to the house. Noah glanced at Luke while they were walking, and noticed some of Luke’s hair was standing up and was messed up.
“Here,” Noah laughed, putting his hand on Luke’s head. “Your hair’s a mess.”
“Probably from you playing with it,” Luke said grinning and looking straight in Noah’s eyes.
“You…you could feel that?”
“Yep!”
“Oh…uh…,” Noah mumbled again.
“It’s ok,” Luke said with a chuckle.
Noah looked down at the ground and blushed, then opened the door for Luke.
“Such the gentleman,” Luke said walking in.
“What can I say?”
“You are quite the catch,” Luke said with a smile. Noah loved how Luke could have personality in the morning. Not a lot of people do. Not even Noah sometimes.
“And what have you two been doing all night,” Kate said sipping her coffee and looking at the newspaper.
“Nothing,” Luke said winking at Noah.
“Ahuh. Don’t believe for one second I believe you.”
“So how are you doing now,” Noah asked, changing the subject.
“Ok. I’m over it now. Stuff like that hits my emotions fast and hard, then the next day I’m usually fine.”
“Weird,” Noah said, grabbing a cup and pouring coffee into it.
“Chyeah. Since when do I do anything normal anyways? Will you guys be ready to go in a hour?”
“You… you want to leave today,” Noah asked.
“I don’t want to stay in this place longer than I have to.”
“I thought you were better?”
“I am, but I just need to get out of this place. Bad energy you know?”
“Uh, not really,” Luke said. “But I guess we could go.”
“Wh-why,” Noah said, slightly choking on some coffee that was too hot.
“Well, I can do some things that I was going to do later this week,” Luke said looking at Noah. “Plus, I still have to do Schultz assignment.”
“Oh, ok,” Noah said.
They got ready, and within the hour, they were back on the road. For the first part, it was quiet, and to be honest, it made Noah extremely nervous. He doesn’t do well in awkward situations. Nevertheless, after a little while, they were back to their old habits of talking about things that don’t make sense. This time, they avoided playing the radio game.
They arrived back to Oakdale, dropping Luke off first, then Kate was okay to drive Noah to Casey’s. When he got to the Hughes, he put his bag down, and spread himself across the couch. He couldn’t believe how exhausted he was, especially since he was alright earlier. It was like, all the sudden the sleep he had missed a few days earlier were catching up on him. He lay on the couch and let his eyes get heavy, finally falling asleep.
He woke up and looked at his watch. It read three seventeen A.M. and Noah couldn’t believe he slept trough most of the day.
He looked over at his phone and saw he had a missed call from Luke. He listened to the voicemail.
“Noah, Noah are you there? Well, just call me back ok? I…I told my parents. I really wnt you to call me back. Bye.”
Noah couldn’t believe what was going on. He fell asleep just ten hours ago, and now, hos boyfriend’s life changed. At least Luke didn’t sound freaked out Noah thought. At least, not a lot.
He looked nervously at Luke, who looked concerned too.
