Tension mounted inside the Snyder home as Luke told his parents everything that had happened in the last few days. He felt compelled to explain why he hadn't told his parents about having a boyfriend and the circumstances surrounding that relationship.
Luke admitted he was too passionate about having someone in his life. He confessed that the desire to have someone actually notice he was alive got the best of him. Luke recalled when Tyron, one of the school’s most popular bikers, had actually asked him out. It was an offer, Luke said, he couldn't turn down.
Tyron was definitely different. After all, a biker dude is not often considered a parent's top choice as their child's boyfriend. Tyron was a bit too blunt about things; uncaring about his own behavior; and not exactly known for manners.
For all these reasons and more, Luke had skipped the boyfriend/parent introduction. He honestly thought the guy would change. He believed that being into a stable, loving relationship would change Tyron. When the time was right, Luke would bring him home to meet the folks.
But the relationship worsened, when Ty’s possessive nature kicked into overdrive. Luke quickly got fed up with all of the sh'it he wentthrough. The final straw was when Ty actually accused Luke of cheating on him after Luke had walked in on Tyrone having sex with another guy. This had to end.
Luke looked over at his parents. Lily sat on the couch with her elbow resting on the armrest whileher head slumped against her hand. Standing beside her was an angry-looking Holden with his arms crossed. Luke could see how disappointed they were in him. Yet no one uttered a word making for a deafening silence.
Lily and Holden were rightly annoyed that the truth had been kept from them. After all, they weren’t cold-blooded enough to give their son the third degree at a time when he was hurting so bad. They could see how everything that happened affected their son by the way he talked about the breakup. They knew better. But that didn’t change anything and lessen their frustration.
From a corner of the room, Ali and Casey silently listened to Luke’s confession. Ali bit her lip nervously as both she and Casey wondered how Holden and Lily would react to Luke’s disclosure. Luke’s gaze shifted to them. He regretted that his friends felt compelled to stay with him instead of going off to the party.
“Case, Ali – You’re going to be late,” Luke said breaking the silence in the room.
“We're not going …” Ali started.
“You should go," insisted Luke with a pleading look. Alison understood and nodded. She looked back at Casey, who put his hand on her shoulder.
“No!” Holden abruptly said catching everyone off guard. “You two are not going …”
“But Dad-”
Holden held up his hand dismissing Luke’s protest. “You two aren’t going. . .without Luke.”
Lily sat up and looked at her husband. She smiled and then turned to Luke.
“You know, I was thinking the same thing. Luke should go to the party now that we're home.”
“Hello!” Luke waved his hands. “Is somebody going to ask ME what I want?”
“Well, we don’t know what you WANT. But we surely do know what you NEED right now.” Holden replied.
“But I don’t want to go.” Luke said, crossing his arms and getting into his sulky mode.
Lily stood up and walked over to her son. She placed her hands on his shoulders.
“Look honey, you need to move on with your life. Tyron isn’t worth your tears.” Luke nodded slowly. “You shouldn’t hold put your life on hold like this. Go out. Enjoy. Show that guy that you’re so better off without him.”
Luke grinned slightly at her mom before giving her a hug. “But still …” He started to say.
Holden cut him off.
“Accept this part of your punishment Luke. We aren’t taking no for an answer.” He movedbeside Lily andsmiled at his son.
“But that doesn’t mean you are completely out of trouble.” Lily quickly added. “You should realize how wrong you were to hide things from us. But for now, go upstairs and change into something nice for the party.”
“Ugh” Luke groaned and started to walk away. “Fine.”
***************
“I can’t believe I even agreed to come with you guys.” Luke told Ali in the car as Casey parked near the party house. Luke had complained all the way from his parents’ house.
Still that didn’t change how happy his friends were to have him with them. After all, they just wanted Luke to forget all about Tyron.
“You didn’t have any choice, did you?” Ali twittered.
“Besides, you know you needed to come and have fun. So stop complaining.” Casey chuckled getting out of the car.
“OK …” Ali nodded. “Are you ready?”
“I guess.”
After they entered the house, Luke looked around the room filled with teen-agers dancing. It felt weird being at a party alone. . .without Tyron. A knot formed in his stomach. Luke kept thinking how people would gossip. They‘d spread rumors about him; and laugh behind his back especially when he looked like such a loser.
‘God, what the hell am I doing here? Like this party is going to help me get over him.How you get over something like what he and I had!’
Luke frowned at the thought and then heavily sighed. He soon realized that his friends had walked away while he stood by the door. He searched for the couple around him but couldn’t find them.
“Bonjour Luke, Comment vas-tu?” Luke almost jumped when Rick suddenly appeared in front of him. Another cute blond, Rick was the guy hosting the party. He was also known as the guy harboring a secret crush on Luke.
“What ...?” Luke asked obviously confused. Something had definitely been lost in the translation.
Rick laughed out loud. “Sorry, I'm speaking French. I just said hello and asked how you were.”
"Oh wow. That's cool. You sound like a natural.” Luke lied.
“Well, thank you. Youknow, French is known to be the most romantic language in the world.” Rick winked at his captive audience.
It took everything Luke had to keep from rolling his eyes. He didn’t want to appear rude. So he settled on. . . “Really? I always thought it was Italian that was the most romantic?”
"Well, I guess it’s a matter of opinion.” Rick chuckled.
“Yeah, I guess.” Luke’s eyes darted around the room searching for either Casey or Alison to come rescue him.
Rick knew if he didn’t say anything quickly, he’d lose this golden opportunity to talk to his dream guy - Luke Snyder. He blurted out the first thing that came to his mind.
“You know, when Casey called me to say you were coming tonight, I was shocked.”
A puzzled Luke looked back at him.
“I thought you wouldn't want to come," Rick stammered. "… after what … Tyron did … I mean if it had happen to me I would absolutely die.” Rick winced as soon as the words left his mouth.
Luke frowned. “Mm... Well I didn't!”
He finally saw Ali walking toward them. Luke shot a ‘save me’ look in her direction.
“Oh Lord! I'm so sorry I brought up Tyron. You must hate me right now.” Rick really hoped he hadn’t messed up things by saying something so stupid.
“Hey Rick,” Ali said, now standing next to Luke. “Great party! Do you mind if I borrow Luke? I need a dance partner."
"Mm... You always have Casey," Rick objected. "We were just talking. So if you don't mind…”
“You know, I would love to dance. I love this song.” Luke interjected. “Rick, you’re the host. You should be partying with all your guests. We can talk later, OK?”
Luke quickly pulled Ali onto the dance floor. "Whew." He exhaled deeply. "Thanks Ali. I owe you big time."
***************
Noah quickly walked across the room to where he thought he saw Luke. He could have cared less about the objections voiced by people he pushed aside while on his mission. He couldn't waste time apologizing.
“DAMN!” Noah swore under his breath when he lost sight of the gorgeous blond. He spun around in a complete 360-degree circle. “Where did he go?”
Spotting a familiar face close by, Noah quickened his pace. He was about to call out Rick by name when. . .
“Hey … watch it,” someone cautioned. But it was too late. Noah never saw the drink heading for his chest.
He scowled down at his now wet shirt. “F’uck! You f’ucking moron! What the h'ell were you thin--” His voice hitched when he looked up.
“Oh hey Luke!” he said, timidly wanting to take back the offending charge.
Luke rolled his eyes. “It’s not like I didn’t warn you.” He frowned. “You should watch where you're going.”
“Oh that…” Noah coughed, feeling awful for swearing at Luke. “That was just … um … well, you know – accidents like that …” He exhaled. “… happen!”
“Whatever!” Luke snapped and started to walk away. Noah stopped him.
Luke shot back a threatening glare. But Noah was too busy checking him out to notice.
The guy looked extremely hot in a black buttoned-up shirt tightly hugging his upper body. Noah’s nose was hit with the unmistakable smell of a modest amount of cologne Luke was wearing. He closed his eyes to savor it while uttering an unconscious moan.
Scrunching up his nose, Luke wondered what obscene thoughts Noah was having; and promptly stomped away. Noah couldn’t tear his gaze off the ass that swayed so temptingly. What a perfect shape shown off in those tight-fitting jeans. He felt the need, more like a pull, to follow the blond.
Luke was grabbing a Coke, when Noah entered the kitchen. He leaned up against the nearby wall.
“You look so hot!” Noah said.
Luke didn’t respond. He figured if he ignored the a$shole, he'd go away.
Noah carefully watched Luke wondering if he had lost his chance with Luke to of all people - Rick. He had seen them talking earlier. They both were smiling. But what had really burned into Noah's mind was the sight of Rick’s hands on Luke’s shoulders. That's what made Noah think there was something going on between the two. After all, there was that rumor of a Luke-Rick crush making the rounds at school.
Noah couldn't help himself. He decided to go for it.
"So. . . I saw you talking to Rick," Luke’s head jerked back at the sudden change in topic. He looked perplexed at Noah.
“Yeah so?”
“So. . .what’s that all about?”
“OK.” Luke pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to hide the start of an amused smile. “The last time I checked. . .," he added with a sarcastic chuckle, "I don't have to answer to you.”
"I'm not saying you have to… I just …” Noah decided to let the inquiry go. “Look, I came in here to apologize for what happened after school, you know when …,” he trailed off.
"Noah, I don't want to hear you say you're sorry, OK?” The tall brunette was surprised at the remark. It made him feel hopeful, if just for a moment or two before Luke really let him have it. “I just want you to leave me alone! Is that too much to ask?”
He spun around, his face burning with anger and began to leave just as Kevin was about to enter the kitchen. Luke shoved him aside.
“Hey, watch it.” Kevin yelled. Luke continued to walk away.
“What the hell is his problem?” Kevin asked a completely pissed-off Noah.
Meanwhile, Luke pushed through the crowd, trying to reach the door.
“Excuse me!” Coming to the partyhad been a disaster. He searched for Casey, hoping that his friend wouldn’t be too drunk to take him home.
Luke suddenly felt a pair of hands snaking round his waist as someone leaned against his back. Luke’s body stiffened. His breath hitched as shivers passed him. He struggled not to appear frightened. He tried to break free of the tightening grip.
“Look Noah,” Luke stammered. “Just leave me alone, OK? I …”
He managed to get the hands off his waist. But one hand caught hold of his wrist. He was strugglingto face thethe person, when hisblood stopped cold. It wasn’t Noah!
***************
“God! What is it with that a$$hole? I try to apologize and he starts acting like he’s some big s’hit.” Noah fumed at how Luke was giving him cold shoulder. He wasn’t used to being on the receiving on of suchan attitude.
“Why were you apologizing to him anyway?” a puzzled Kevin asked.
“I gave him a ride today and apparently I was going too fast,” Noah curled his index fingers. “… for his standards.”
“Wow. Luke Snyder afraid of speed!” Kevin joked.
“Yeah, the nerve of that guy!” Noah chuckled.
Kevin started laughing, finding the situation hilarious.
“What’s with you?” Noah asked.
”You want to get even with Snyder, don‘t you?” He continued laughing pointing a finger at Noah.
“Ow!” He winced when Noah’s fist hit his head.
“Shut the f’uck up!” Noah looked down at his damaged shirt. “I‘m gonna try to wash off this stain in the bathroom. I'lll be right back.”
Noah started to walk toward the stairs, when he caught sight of someone dragging Luke out of the house. He pushed through the crowd toward the struggling blonde.
***************
Tyron’s grip around Luke was tightening. Try as he might, Luke couldn’t break free from underneath the stronger guy.
A forceful kiss was pushed against his lips making him want to vomit.
“No Ty. Why are you doing this? We are over …”
A drunken Tyron groaned. “I miss you so much. I want you back. We never got a chance to …” he grinned. “Let’s do it tonight. We’ll go to my place and …”
Luke struggled again as Tyron started to pull him toward his car.
“Tyron, I don’t want to go with you. Don’t you f’ucking get that?” Luke yelled. Couldn’t anybody hear Luke’s cries?
“Oh I do understand baby.” Tyron whispered seductively to the disgusted Luke. “I understand how much you are dying for me to touch you.”
A frightful, teary-eyed Luke looked up. He could see how determined Tyron was and that scared the h'ell out of him.
“That’s why you were trying to hook up with one of the a’ssholes in there.” A smug Tyron nodded toward Rick’s house.
“What are you talking about?”
“Oh don’t playinnocent with me.” Ty laughed sardonically, “Anyone could see how Rick and Noah were both drooling over you. Don’t act so naïve when you are the one seducing them.”
Luke’s jaw dropped. “You’re sick.”
“No, you are!” Tyron yelled, “You are a sick pervert … a b!tch … and my b!tch tonight.” He laughed at the fearful Luke.
Suddenly someone yanked Tyron off of Luke by the collar. He watched as Noah delivered two direct blows to his attacker’s stomach followed by a punch guaranteed to messed up Tyron’s handsome face.
Luke rushed up to stop Noah. Tyron dropped in a crumbled heap to the ground. Noah shot the cringing Tyrone a glaring warning to stay away from Luke.
The rescuer grab Luke’s hand and ran toward his bike. As he picked up his helmet, Noah noticed that the blond shivering. He quickly removed his leather jacket and offered it to Luke.
“Here. Take it.” Noah suggested, slightly smiling as Luke accepted the offer. Noah climbed aboard the chopper and patted the seat behind him. Luke quickly jumped on.
In an uncomfortable silence broken only by Luke‘s directions to his house, the two rodefrom the party to back to the Snyder home. Luke was grateful that Noah didn’t take advantage of his situation like he had done the other day. Maybe Noah wasn’t a bad guy after all, he thought.
Noah slowed down his bike just in front of Luke’s house. The passenger hopped off and removed Noah’s jacket. But as he started to hand it back, Noah nodded no.
“You can keep it if you want,” he said sincerely.
Luke declined and turned to leave.
Noah figured that Luke still hadn’t forgiven him. He lowered his eyes and sighed heavily…loud enough for Luke to hear.
Blinking his eyes, he twisted back toward Noah.
“Thanks, Noah,“ he whispered.
A confused Noah looked up. “What?”
“I said thank you.” The two exchanged smiles. “If you hadn’t been there, I don’t know what Tyron …”
“Hey, it’sall over now. Just don’t think about it.” Noah said gently.
Luke nodded. “OK. But thanks again.”
“You don’t need to thank a friend for helping you, do you?”
Luke was surprised by Noah's comment.
“Friends?” he chuckled.
Noah smiled broadly before extending his hand.
“We haven’t been on good terms until now. So why don’t we start over. Leave our differences in the past where they belong.” Noah suggested. “What’ll you say? You know I’m really not that bad of a guy once you get to know me.”
A giggling Luke took Noah’s hand and shook it firmly.
“Friends!” he exclaimed.
Luke and Noah felt the same warming sensation about the simple contact. While Luke dismissed the feeling quickly, Noah cherished it.
Luke then removed his hand saddening Noah, who panicked.
“I'll see you on Monday then. Good night.” Luke turned back to head inside.
“Huh…What? Monday? NOOOOO!” Luke-less thoughts raced through Noah’s mind. ‘That’s two whole days of not seeing him or talking with him. Never!
“Luke?” Noah called out. The object of his desire again turned back, this timeraising his eyebrows.
“Hmm?”
Noah nervously bit inside of his cheek.
“Don’t you think … um… since we are friends now … uh… that we should exchange phone numbers?”
A small knowing smile crept across Luke’s face bringing relief to Noah’s. He pulled out his cell phone and handed it to Luke, who lent his to Noah. Each entered their respective number and then said a final good night.
Noah watched Luke stroll up the front walk and then disappear inside.
‘I want him so bad. I want so much more than just shaking hands. I want to be more than just friends with Luke Snyder.’
Putting his helmet back on, Noah revved up the motorand drove off. He didn’t see Luke standing in his bedroom window peeking out as a beautiful smile played upon his lips.
