(Congrats again to pj3 for being the only one to figure it out!!)

Love at first sight. So cliché, so over exaggerated. Or at least, that was what Aaron had always thought. When people asked if he believed in love at first sight, he would only laugh and say, “I don’t!”

His mind traced back to the day he first met Rose. He didn’t have a clue who she was, and he had been grateful that day, that from the outside of the screened in porch, images were blurred. He had seen her clearly, though he knew she couldn’t see him well through the screen; only a silhouette. But he had frozen inside that porch when he first saw the blonde.

Now that he thought about it, he had acted a bit rude to her. Or at least, more business-like than friendly. But he had been mad at himself; he had shaken his head reprimanding himself for looking at her like that when he was engaged. Finding out that she was Noah’s sister was both a let down, and a breath of fresh air. She was like his sister, now. He had mentally reprimanded himself yet again at being disappointed by the news, but was kinder to her after that, telling himself that he had to treat her like family; she was just another sister added to his list of family members.

Well, not really his sister; not even by marriage, but by Luke and Noah’s attitudes and relationship, he was sure Rose would be his sister-in-law soon enough. The thought made him sick; and that realization made him feel even worse.

When news spread through the family that Rose was suspect in her father’s murder, Aaron’s reaction was different from the others. They believed it, but they didn’t want to. Aaron, on the other hand, didn’t believe it, but he wanted to more than anything. If he could believe she was a murderer, he could get over this ‘crush.’ He cringed just thinking the word.

Alison had become a bit distant, but he was sure it was because he’d been acting weird, particularly around Rose, though he tried to stay out of her way as much as possible. He’d accomplished the feat quite well, in his opinion. Then there came the day when Rose was officially charged with the murder. He wanted to yell at Jack; to tell him that Rose wasn’t a murderer. No one that kind, and beautiful and innocent could be a murderer, but he couldn’t very well say that aloud.

News came through Lily after the police force surrounded the Lakeview in an effort to catch her. He could still remember the numb feeling that had overtaken his body. He was in a chair, though he didn’t remember sitting. Maybe he’d fallen into the chair. He wasn’t really sure. The only thing he was sure of, as he dropped the phone to the tile floor, was that he had to get to the hospital. Lily had told him that Rose was asleep, and had just came out of surgery, but he wanted to go down there himself. He just had to see her for himself.

He stopped at a flower shop on the way, and looked around without a clue of exactly what he was looking for.

“Can I help you?” a lady asked kindly, walking around the counter to meet him as he glanced towards a stand holds more flowers than he cared to count.

“Yes, um, I need to get some flowers for someone in the hospital,” Aaron replied, slightly relieved to have someone to help him.

“Alright, no problem,” the lady said kindly and gestured for him to follow her, “Any kind of flowers in particular you were thinking of?”

“I dunno,” he muttered, “Maybe roses?”

“And is she family?”

“Uh, kind of.”

"Mother?"

"No."

“Sister?”

“Something like that.”

“Well we have plenty of different roses,” she said, stopping in front of a display holding roses of a thousand colors, “They all mean something different,” she continued. He raised an eyebrow at her as though she’d lost her mind. Why would roses mean different things based on their color? “I can go over them for you,” she replied to his confused look, then turned back to the stand, pointing at each colored rose in turn, “Now, the red mean romantic love, of course; you wouldn’t want those. The white mean humility, purity and innocence; maybe those if you like them. The pink mostly mean gratitude, but it can mean different things depending on the shade of pink,” she glanced over and caught his eye, smiling amusedly at his face, “Well, we can skip those for now. Orange is for admiration and attraction; you definitely don’t want those.”

Her eyes scanned the rack for a few more minutes before landing on a yellow one and pulling it out, “Maybe yellow roses? Yellow is a sign of friendship, joy and caring. I’m sure it would be perf-”

“What do those mean?” Aaron cut her off, gesturing towards a small purple rose near the end of the display.

“Oh, the purple roses will send a message of love at first sight. I’m sure you don’t wan-”

“I’ll take a dozen,” he said quickly, cutting her off again. He didn’t think much as he said it, just acting on impulse.

“Um, if it’s for your sister, I don’t know,” the lady said uncertainly, “You may not know the meanings of the colors, but most women do. Its practically second nature.”

Aaron didn’t reply, but just started looking through the roses and picking out the best looking purple ones.

Half an hour later, he gave the roses to Luke and left the hospital, wishing he had just gotten the yellow roses, and hoping beyond reason that Rose was one of the few women-Girls, he reprimanded himself, She’s only a girl.-that didn’t know what the colors of roses meant, or that she would just assume he had no clue what it meant, and see it as only a friendly gesture.
But you want her to see it as something more. A voice in the back of his head spoke up. You want her to see it for what it means. Aaron shook his head as he pulled out the keys to his car. No. He didn’t want her to know. Because he had Ally. He didn’t want Rose. But as much as he tried to tell himself the statement, the less he believed it.

Love at first sight. Truth had been given to the words. And as much as he wanted to deny it; if someone asked him now if he believed in love at first sight, he would only give them a weak smile and say, “I didn’t.”
