“You have to kill him, there’s no way around it,” a rough voice echoed in the shadowed room where two men stood facing each other in the darkness.

“What does my boy have to do with this?” the dark-haired man replied, “He doesn’t even claim me as his father.”

“Yes, well we can’t have him getting anything that belongs to you should you meet an….unfortunate end,” replied the shorter man with dark blonde hair, “You owe us more than your life is worth, and we can’t run the risk of your pathetic excuse for a son taking claim over any of it.” The taller man opened his mouth to reply, but caught his breath at the cruel smirk on the other man’s face, “Besides,” he said in a venomous voice, “If he doesn’t claim you as a father, you’ve already lost your son. All you have to do is make sure no one else can claim him as theirs. And if you don’t-”

“I know, I know,” the man cut him off, “There will be hell to pay.”

The shorter man just shook his head, “You don’t do this, and you’ll wish you were in hell.”

The man swallowed hard, staring at the ground for a moment before his gaze rose to meet the mischievous brown eyes before him, “Fine. But I can’t very well just go and murder the boy.”

“You don’t have to,” the man replied simply, “You’re smart. You’re a resourceful man. Surely you know the boy’s weaknesses. So use them to kill him,” he said in a deathly quietly voice. The taller man nodded and his smirked widened, “Just remember: you have three weeks, Grimaldi.”

-----------------------

“Good morning,” a voice came from the stairs, but Noah didn’t turn to see who it was. This was practically morning ritual on the days when Luke was already at the barn when he woke up.

“Morning, Aaron,” he said simply, scooping the last of his cereal into the spoon and finishing it, “I gotta run,” he added, grabbing his jacket from the coat rack after he rinsed his bowl in the sink, “I need to finish a paper for tomorrow at the library.”

Aaron just nodded, “Good luck,” he muttered as he opened the cabinet and got out a coffee cup.

Noah was out of the house and in his truck in seconds. With the distraction of shopping for the ring for Luke, he had completely forgotten that he had to edit his final draft for his English paper to turn in tomorrow.

------------------------

A few hours later, and Noah had finished his paper and worked a quick two-hour shift at Java before his lunch break. He wished he could still see Luke, as he always did on his lunch breaks, but had more important matters to attend to. He groaned inwardly as he approached the storefront, seeing the same man who’d been in there yesterday standing at the counter, polishing the outside of a ring that Noah assumed was his.

He pushed the door open and gave the man a weak smile, which went unreturned as the man finished polishing the ring and slid it back into the box, Placing it in a bag and handing it to Noah, “Have a nice day,” he said coldly.

“You too,” Noah muttered under his breath, seething but attempting to hide it.

“Hope your boyfriend,” he spat the word in obvious disgust, “Likes it.”

“What was that, Stephen?” a voice came from the doorway behind the counter and Stephen froze, and Noah watched the color drain from his face as the man, whom Noah assumed to be Stephen’s boss, walked forward, “Have you been giving our customer here a hard time?” he asked in a sweet though firm voice.

Stephen just glanced at him, then averted his gaze. The man turned to Noah instead, “Has he been rude to you today, sir?”

Noah glanced at Stephen, who gave him a pleading look, though Noah didn’t have a clue how Stephen actually expected him to cover for his rude behavior. So he just looked back at the man and smiled kindly at him, “No sir, not any worse than yesterday,” he said innocently. Stephen stared at him in horror.

“I’m very sorry,” the man said nodding his head towards Noah, then turned to Stephen, “May I have a word with you in my office? We need to discuss your current job position,” and Noah was sure he heard the man say under his breath, “Or lack thereof.”

Ignoring the slight guilt at losing the man his job, Noah left the shop, telling himself that the man deserved it. He acted like a complete ass. It’s one thing to think a certain way, but to say it to a customer?

Noah shook the thoughts from his head as he headed back towards Java, only to see Rose waiting for him at the counter, sipping a mocha latte, “Hey Noah,” she said brightly, “Where were you? Don’t you usually hang out here with Luke on your lunch break?”
“Usually, but I just had something I needed to do,” Noah said, shrugging slightly.

When he didn’t continue, Rose raised her eyebrows at him, “And you’re not gonna tell me what it was, are you?”

Noah glanced up at the clock, and saw that he still had ten minutes before he had to work again, so he walked over to a table in the corner and motioned for Rose to follow. She bounded excitedly after him, plopping down into one of the chairs, “Ok, now you have to promise to keep it a secret,” he whispered, leaning over the table towards her as he put a hand in his pocket.

“I promise.”

“Even from Luke. Especially from Luke,” he added quickly. She looked at him oddly, but nodded anyways, “Ok, I was out getting this,” he said, pulling out the small black box and handing it to Rose.

Her eyes met his blue ones for a moment before she looked back at the box and carefully opened it. She gasped, clapping a hand to her mouth, “Oh my gosh, are you serious?” she asked excitedly in a hushed tone.

“Shh, secret, remember?” Noah said hurriedly as he reached to take the ring back, though he was grinning at her reaction.
Rose raised her hand and held up three fingers, “Scout’s honor.”

“I didn’t know you were a Girl Scout,” Noah said amusedly.

“For about three months when I was eight,” Rose laughed, then gestured towards the box that Noah was replacing in his pocket, “So? When are you gonna ask him?”

Noah shrugged, “I don’t know. I think I’m gonna talk to Holden first. I don’t even know how to ask him,” he muttered quietly, and Rose wasn’t sure if he was still talking to her anymore, or just himself.

His eyes snapped up when a dishcloth landed on his shoulder, “Hey, lunch break’s over,” Jeff called jokingly from behind the counter.

Noah rolled his eyes, smiling slightly as he grabbed the dishtowel and stood, “I’m coming,” he said, then looked back at Rose, “I’ll see you at the farm tonight for dinner?”

“Of course!” Rose said brightly.
