Chapter 1 - Mind

Noah was on a plane on his way to Oakdale. He had spent a year in the army and he was done with it. A year… the longest year of his life. He had agreed with his father that if he enroled for 2 years the colonel would pay the tuition fees at Northwestern. He’d had enough with one year, and he wasn’t going to Northwestern anyway. He’ll stay in Oakdale.
He looked through the window and saw the clouds… everything seemed different from there. Everything was different.
When he left Oakdale he had been going out with Maddie. She hadn’t been very happy with his decission, but she’d accepted it. They had been in touch for a few weeks and she visited him once. Just before he broke up with her. He had to do it on the phone and it had been ugly. She didn’t understand why and Noah wasn’t brave enough to tell her the truth. He hadn’t been able to be honest to her.
The fact was that he’d been hoping that she would go with Luke. He felt sad when they told him that Luke wasn’t going and he missed him more than he had missed Maddie. He knew. He just knew that it was not supposed to be like that.
He read every letter he got from Maddie looking for some news from Luke, just anything. The week before he left they had been swimming in the Snyder’s pond, and it had been amazing. He’d had a lot of fun swimming with Luke, but that hadn’t been all… he had felt the attraction. For the first time since he met Luke he had felt the need to touch him. They were just playing with the towels and they ended up crashing together. He felt sparks all over his body, and felt paralized when he saw Luke’s face so close to his.
Would he have kissed him if Maddie hadn’t caught them? He certainly wanted to. There was no use denying that anymore. He’d had plenty of time to think about it during the past year. And there was something very clear: he wanted Luke.
Just then he heard the voice telling them that they were going to land in Oakdale airport in 10 minutes. He felt uneasy… what if Luke had a boyfriend? What if he didn’t live in Oackdale anymore?
When he left the airport he had his hopes set on finding Luke. He didn’t know what he was going to do when he found him, but he was going to.
Once he was settled at The Lakeview he tried to decide where to start looking. He was a man with a mission. The farm. He was going to go straight to the farm and ask about him. He was going to focus on the target.

He got to the farm with his heart in his mouth. Was he crazy? What the hell was he doing in here? What was he going to say?
Suddenly someone opened the door and stopped at the sight of Noah. Luke… Noah hadn’t had time to prepared anything, so he just went by instinct
“Emh… hi”
Good instinct, Noah Mayer, very good…
“Noah?”
Luke smiled. Oh, my… that’s why he was here and not in some military camp, because of this smile
“Yeah… I wasn’t sure you’d be here…”
“When did you come back?”
5 minutes ago? Too revealing
“Not long ago… how are you?”
“I’m fine… fine” Another smile and Noah’s heart missed a beat “So, what are you up to?”
Nothing… now that I’ve seen you…
“Are you here to stay?”
Only if you want me
"For a while, I guess”
Luke smiled again
“Wanna go for a walk?”
With you? I’d go to the end of the world…
“Sure, why not”
They started walking and ended up sitting down near the Snyder pond. They hadn’t talk since they left the farm, just enjoyed the silence. Noah realized that his heart and his mind were going different ways, his mind spoke up, and he wanted it to be his heart, but he just wasn’t brave enough
“You look different, Noah”
I think I love you
“It’s been a long year…”
Luke smiled again looking at him and lift up his hand and brushed his fingers through Noah’s hair.
“Your hair is so short”
Don’t stop touching me… ever
“Yeah, I hate it, military rules and regulations”
So amazing, why did Luke smile so much today?
“I kinda like it… it suits you”
I’ll never let it grow, then
Luke’s hand slipped down and stop at Noah’s cheek for a bit longer
Yes, please…
“You ok?”
No, I’ve been to war… I have nightmares and I am cold…
“I guess, just tired”
Luke dropped his hand
Colder now…
“Where have you been?”
In hell
“First in a training camp and then… here and there”
“How many days have you got till you have to go back?”
“I’m not going back”
Never
“I thought you were gonna be in the army for a couple of years”
“Yeah, but I decided than one year was enough, so…”
I missed you so much
Luke stopped smiling and looked out at the expanse of water before them. Noah thought the sun had gone down, he
had been craving Luke’s smile for a year.
“Maddie was here for a couple of days”
“How is she?”
I’m sorry I hurt her, but I wanted you… it was you all along
“She’s alright, studying a lot. She’s going out with a guy from the same dorm”
Good, that’s good
“Good… that’s good”
For once mind and heart talking in unison
“She told me that you two broke up”
I left her…
“Yes”
“She didn’t tell me why”
She doesn’t know, I just told her that it was over… because it is you I want
“Was she ok?”
“She was sad for a while, she looked really confused”
My fault
“I am glad she’s found someone”
“She seems to be alright now”
“Good”
Now Luke looked at him again
“Are you going to go back home, then?”
Home? I don’t know where that is
“I think I’ll stay here… start college after summer and get a room at the dorms”
“I thought you wanted to go to Northwestern”
I thought that too, I was wrong
“My father is not paying my tuition fees, so I’ll stay here”
With you… if you want me
“I’m sorry to hear that. I thought that he was gonna pay for it if you served in the army”
“Two years, he wanted me to do two years”
And I can’t go back, I just can’t
“Ah… I see. Well, if you need anything…”
I need you to touch me… to hold me and help me get rid of this cold
“I’ll probably put my foot in my mouth here, but… are you sure you are ok?”
No… I’ve been to hell
He felt lost, and very cold, and suddenly he felt his eyes fill with tears. He moved his head and looked the other way so Luke wouldn’t see.
Chapter 2
