Chapter 12: Close but so far
The days passed. Luke knew exactly how much time had passed since the last time he had seen Noah awake: 211 days, 14 hours, 45 minutes, and 45 seconds when....
During these 7 months, Luke felt the loss of Noah more and more every day, and almost every night he had the same dream, he dreamed that Noah awoke and came to him, into his room here at the farm, saying that he loved him... they started to kiss and when they were close to making love, and Luke felt Noah like he was really there, he woke up and found himself always alone... the desire still burned inside him so badly, he had to do something to ease the tightness that he felt ... and when he came alone he cried... for all he had lost...for the fear of not feeling Noah's body close to him... for the fear to never be able to make love with him... for the fear of living his life alone without love, or worse, accepting someone else in his life just so that he wouldn't feel all this loneliness, and also for the fact that he could see Noah every day, but always in his hospital room.
The colonel was doing everything he could to help discover who had done this to his son. He had called in favours, asking for military help but the General said that it was impossible, and threatened to let the newspapers know about the fact that he had killed his ex wife and tried to kill his son's boyfriend... after that the satellite photos arrived but the only thing that they could see was the car that left the scene, leaving Noah on the ground. The police hadn't found a match for the DNA that had been recovered from the scene... while Winston also tried to help Noah, calling the most famous doctors asking for consultations and the best physiotherapist.
Every morning before he did anything else, Luke would go to see Noah at the hospital. In the beginning he went alone, but after a while Win started to come with him. One of these mornings, almost six months after Noah attack, inside Noah’s truck while they were going to the hospital, Winston told him that he no longer had any choice; he must stay with Noah...because as a father he didn't have any alternative, but Luke had, since he was so young and one day he would go on with his life. For the first time in his life Luke felt a connection between him and the Colonel, and when he looked in his eyes he saw the same look that Noah had when he was worried...
Some days afterwards, Luke went on a date with Reg and Tony’s friend James. James knew everything that had happened with Noah and tried to help Luke and made it clear that he wanted it to be a one-night thing. Luke went with him into his room, but when he was about to kiss him he felt like he was somehow betraying Noah, and so he left....
...The next day, like every day, he went to Noah’s room and took his hand in his own, then Luke felt his fingers move...
