Chapter 13: Awakening
The fingers of Noah's right hand moved a little; Luke felt this light movement. He raised his head to see Noah’s face. As always he looked like he was sleeping, but after one second of confusion Luke continued to talk to him about Maddie's last e-mail, and while he talked he pressed the call button on Noah's bed, a few moments later a nurse arrived and Luke explained what had happened. The nurse went out again and after a little while Doctor Hughes arrived and began to check Noah over, he was soon followed by a specialist, Dr. Martin. Luke left Noah’s room briefly to get someone to find the colonel, who was probably at the hospital cafe, then he saw his dad arriving and went quickly towards him saying:
- “What happened Luke?”
- “Noah moved his hand! Call Winston”
- “I’ll go.” Holden left his son, looking into Noah's room through the glass, watching his man and the doctors and praying that it hadn't been his imagination.
 | - “It’s only the beginning “- Dr. Hughes said. “ it seems that Noah is beginning to awaken, but this period can take a long time.” - “How long?” asked Luke - “Hours, days, we don’t know. It's likely that once he's completely awake he'll be confused, and we don’t know yet whether the trauma he suffered will have had any major consequences, but you can return to him, I'm sure your presence will help” Luke and Winston took turns at Noah’s bedside so he was never alone, and every day much more they could see the signs of the awakening, he moved his hands, his head and opened his eyes, and sometimes it seemed like he was trying to talk. Some days afterwards, one afternoon Noah turned his head to Winston said in a very faint voice: - “Dad, who is that guy that's taking care of me? He didn’t look like a nurse...” |
