A nude Luke scrambled out of bed. Grabbing his robe from nearby chair, he covered his body; and tied the robe with deliberate force.
He then turned to face Noah.
“So...,” he muttered struggling to suppress his anger. “All you really wanted from me was some new kind of f’uck before you reunited with your family. Fine. You got what you wanted. Now get the hell out of my house.”
Luke turned away from Noah determined not to break down in front of him.
A naked Noah leaped off the bed and captured Luke from behind. The commissioner tried to pull away. But he was no match for the stronger Noah.
“Luke? Luke!” Noah blew out as he tightened his arms across the smaller man’s chest. “Listen to me, will you?” He pressed Luke’s upper back against his chest.
Luke twisted to face Noah.
“Do you really think the Gambinos are going to welcome you back with open arms like some long loss son? Noah!” Luke searched his lover’s face praying to reach him on some level. “You gave a sworn deposition naming names and providing details on perhaps the largest illegal drug operation in Southern Europe. Last time I checked the mob doesn’t take kindly to members who do that.”
Noah caught Luke’s face in his hands.
“Luke, I have a plan. Will you let me explain it to--”
“Explain what Noah?” A frightened Luke teared up. “How you plan to get yourself killed! Because that’s what’s going to happen.”
Noah argued that while the information he had provided was good resulting in several arrests, it hadn’t been enough to bring down the heads of the crime families.
“Right now, we can only get them for financial crimes not much more. I talked with (investigation officials) Davide Castelli and Savino Patrizi. We agreed that me returning to the family was the only way to get what’s needed to nail the bastards once and for all.”
Luke regarded Noah. The idea of the man he loved, who had saved his life and who had been tortured so severely for it was even contemplating returning to the family was too much for Luke to bear. He pulled out of Noah’s grip.
“It’s too dangerous. You’ll never get out alive. Bringing scum like the Gambinos and the other families is a job for the police,” he lectured Noah. “Let us handle it and keep you safe.”
Noah offered a small smile as he took a step toward his lover.
“Luke, you have to understand.” He lightly rubbed Luke’s shoulders. “Until these people are put away permanently for all that they’ve done, I can’t move on. . . with life especially with you.”
Luke shrugged his shoulders and then looked up at Noah. “OK, explain this idea of yours. But understand,” he said, gesturing with his finger,. “I just willing to listen right now. It doesn’t mean I agree.”
“Fair enough,” answered Noah, quickly putting on his sleeping pants and sitting down next to Luke on the edge of the bed.
”Davide and Saverio explained that the investigators combing through the books I gave them discovered that some people pay for the Gambino services with diamonds. The police have been chasing these couriers for some time. But the Gambinos always seem to be two steps ahead of them. The cops may catch a couple little fish but not the masterminds.”
A courier carrying a large cache of diamonds destined for the Gambinos was scheduled to arrive the following week in Rome, according to Noah.
“The investigators found out who the courier is; when he’s expected to arrive; and where the drop will be made,” Noah explained. “But they won’t move in and arrest him. Rather I will get word to the family that the police are on to them about the delivery. Surely saving a fortune in payoffs along with their own hides is bound to go a long way in proving my loyalty to them.”
Luke took Noah’s hand in his. “But Noah, they nearly killed you after they saw you kiss me in the park. They also put out a contract on you after we rescued you and you started providing information on the family various businesses.”
“That’s true. But you’re forgetting that it was Giovanni who kidnapped me. I’m quite sure his dad, Mario, knew nothing of the plan.”
“How can you say that?”
“Because Mario trusts me, Luke. When I first joined the family, I took care of some major problems with the family’s import-export business.” Noah smiled. “I quickly proved made myself invaluable in his eyes.”
The day Luke and Noah met in the park Noah was there following Mafia Gunman Valerio Coppola, who gun down Noah’s wife and young daughter back in New York.
“Mario approved me going after him after I argued that Coppola killed Angela and our daughter on orders from the Accardo Family seeking revenge for a past Gam--” Noah’s voice faltered for a moment. “But I know in my gut that Mario ordered the hit because Angela was going to go to the cops. I lied to Mario in order to gain the freedom and time I needed to track down Coppola.”
Luke gently stroke Noah’s cheek. “But how are you going to explain them seeing you kissing me and for staying in protective custody all this time?”
“I’ll tell them I used you after discovering you were attracted to me when we first met in the police interrogation room.”
An embarrassed Luke bowed his head and then looked back at Noah. “You knew I was attracted to you that early?” Luke smirked. “. . . and here I thought I hid it so well.”
“Because of you, I realized what a mess I was in.”
Luke become lost in his thoughts for a few moments before Noah broke the silence. “What are you thinking?”
Caramel brown locked onto cornflower blue.
“I still don’t want you to go for purely selfish reasons. But at the same time, I know you have to go and get the lot of them. Otherwise, your wife and daughter will never rest in peace.”
Noah pulled in the commissioner closer and squeezed him tightly.
