He was running out of time. And breath. His lungs screamed with fire with every breath he took, but he wouldn't stop. He couldn't.
He wove through the trees, feeling branches scratch at his skin through his jeans, and he was sure that he was bleeding in places, but he wouldn't stop to check. He had to keep running.
They were close. He tried to listen out for any sound of them, but his heart was pounding in his ears. His head whipped about frantically, trying to decide which way to go. Everything looked the same. He didn't have time to stop, He knew if he even faltered for a second, they would have him.
A sudden howl sent a chill down his spine. They were close. His mind screamed at him "Move. Get out of there. Fuck." And he just kept running.
A sound behind him caused him to turn his head as he moved forward, but he could see nothing but a blur of the same endless forest. Before he could turn back, he knew, he had reached the edge of the clearing. But it was too late. He was already falling....
Luke woke up with a start, his legs kicking out in reaction to the fall in his mind. His body shook from the vividness of the dream, as he tried to remember where he was. His breath was erratic, and he was sweating. But he was safe. In bed. As he adjusted back to reality, he tried to slow his breath and clear his mind, blinking into the darkness. What the hell is happening to me?
He kicked the sheets off, letting the cool night air hit his skin. He started to feel calmer.
Swinging his feet off the bed, he sat up, and let his mind wander back over the events in the dream. It was different from the last.
The forest was new. Last time it had been an empty street. He was always running though. Always running. Always that same fear locked in his throat, making him feel as if he couldn't breathe. They had been closer this time though. He worried that next time he wouldn't be fast enough, and whatever was chasing him would finally show itself.
He shook the thoughts from his head. It wasn't real. He repeated this over and over till the dream felt like a distant memory, then he padded his way downstairs to the kitchen. The house was full but quiet, and Luke felt the silence like a blanket of familiarity. Years of creeping downstairs in the middle of the night for one reason or another. It was, and always would be, home.
Leaning against the kitchen counter, he closed his eyes, feeding images into his brain of happy times, trying to erase the dream that seemed to be imprinted in his mind.
And it worked too, right up until the moment he opened them again, and found himself staring straight out the window to the dark setting beyond the farm. The shadows of the trees seemed to taunt him, bringing the fear thundering back into his throat. He wanted to scream, but knew he couldn't with everyone sleeping.
No. I'm not a kid. I won't let a fucking dream do this.
He decided not to think of it again. It's nothing, he told himself. Nothing.
