The forest again. Fuck. He couldn't see a thing. It had grown more dense and more overgrown since the last time. He told himself to remember the clearing. To remember this was a dream. He screamed to himself to wake up, but he couldn't. He had to run.

Everywhere he looked, everywhere he turned he saw the same god damn trees. He felt as if he was running in circles, and that thought slammed into his throat hard, the fear almost choking him. If he were running in circles, they would surely catch him.

There was more of them this time, he felt it. A pack, becoming an army, surrounding him on all sides. They were closing in, not making a sound. Doing it slowly to torture him. To them, it was a game. They were simply waiting for him to tire so the real fun could begin.

He refused to let them win. He gained a second wind and spun on his heal, heading back the way he had come. It seemed like a great idea at the time, surprise them, throw them off. About 60 seconds later he grew worried. It was still the same loop of trees.

But then he saw it. He couldn't believe it at first. He truly thought he'd imagined it. Of course you're imagining it, his mind screamed, it's a dream! But he'd lost all connection to reality by now, and all he knew was the fear he felt consume his entire body.

Fear that changed to disbelief and then relief when he saw the house ahead of him. His legs ached from running but he somehow found the strength to run faster, the hope of something different, a safe house, pushing him forward.

Suddenly the forest came to an end. He had been so focussed on the house that he hadn't noticed it sat alone, amidst an acre of grass, the forest surrounding it on all sides, like a frame.

The grass was soft beneath his feet, and he suddenly felt lighter. He couldn't feel them behind him anymore, and for a moment, a brief moment, he felt safe. He stopped dead in his tracks, hardly believing he'd beat them. He'd won.

He stood in place, breathing, letting the relief wash over him. Then he stated walking towards the house.

It took Luke a few seconds to realize it, but with each step he took, a new feeling had started to surface. Deep in his gut, was this feeling of dread. Of danger. Of death.

Had he been quicker to realize it, he might not have opened the door to the house. Hell, he might have turned and run straight back to those damn trees and let them catch him. Anything to save himself from what he came upon next.

The wooden door creaked as he pushed upon it, the rusted door handle useless and broken. Luke took in the sight of the empty hall and the cobwebs coating everything like snow. Clearly no one had been here in years. If ever.

He took a tentative step inside, and turned his head to the left, where he saw a small den. There was no furniture anywhere, but a strange metal smell Luke knew he should recognise, but couldn't quite place.

Moving forward into the den, he froze. His stomach lept into his throat and he had just enough energy to turn around before he vomited on the floor behind him.

Oh god. Tell me that's not....

The thought sent another wave of nausea through him, and before he could stop it, his stomach had emptied itself on the floor. Gasping for air, he forced himself to calm down. To get a hold of himself so he could make sure of what he just saw.

He wiped his mouth on his sleeve, ignoring the smell, and stood up. He was facing away from the figure behind him, and he closed his eyes and counted to ten before her turned around.

Opening his eyes, he expected to bile to rise again, but he surprised himself when tears sprang up instead. His heart was beating so large and fast, he was sure it was about to break right out of his chest. The figure that laid before him was on their stomach. Their face turned away towards the wall. But it didn't matter. Luke would recognise this person anywhere. They were still wearing his ring.

The ring that he'd given as a promise of his love, merely months before. The ring that now lay in a pool of blood.

Luke crashed down onto his knees, hysteria taking over, and he knew he was crying, he could taste the salt on his lips, but he couldn't stop. Couldn't think. Couldn't breathe.

"Noah"

The word repeated in his mind. A chant, a plea sent to whoever and whatever did this, to bring him back. To end this hell, or at least take him too so that he wouldn't have to deal with this alone. That's what he was now. Alone. The one person he wanted, the one person he was meant for in this life, was gone.

He woke up screaming.
