“Well, well the great Damian Grimaldi.. sitting in a hotel bar drinking alone. How the mighty have fallen.”Lucinda said interrupting Damian’s thoughts.
Damian looked up from his drink and saw his former mother in law standing in front of him giving him an almost pitiful look.
“Lucinda Walsh.. I’d say it’s a pleasure to see you again, but it’s not.” Damian said turning his attention back to the glass on the bar in front of him.
“What are you still doing here? I thought you’d be back in Malta or Italy or where ever it is you live.” Lucinda said ignoring Damian’s comment.
“Not that it’s any of your business but I’m waiting for my son.” Damian replied and glanced at the hotel’s front door hoping to see the person he was waiting for.
“Luke doesn’t want anything to do with you.” Lucinda stated coldly. “I don’t know why you even came back in the first place. He’s happy and doing fine without you.”
“I know..” Damian said not taking his eyes off his glass. “I sent him a message and explained everything. And I told him to meet me here if he understood and wanted to give me one last chance.”
“Well I guess he made the right decision then.” Lucinda said sounding happy. “Now I would love to stay and chat, but I have an appointment with someone that actually will show up.”
Damian ignored his former mother in law, glanced at the hotel’s front door again, finished his drink and motioned to the bartender to get him a new one. “Make it a double.”
“Drowning your sorrows won’t make them go away you know.” Damian looked to where the voice was coming from and watched the man that had just spoken to him take a seat next to him at the bar.
“Sorry I should mind my own business.” The man said apologetic and ordered a drink.
“No it’s ok.” Damian heard himself say. “I could use some friendly advice I guess.”
“Well I’m not sure I’m any good at giving advice but I’ve been told I’m a good listener.” The man said giving Damian a friendly smile.
“Are you a shrink or something? I don’t need a shrink I need another drink.” Damian said and amused himself with his little joke.
“A shrink? Do I look like a shrink to you?” The man asked Damian with an amused look on his face.
Damian looked at the man again. “No.. I guess you don’t..”
“So what’s her name? Or have you drowned that in whiskey already?” the man asked.
“No, no woman.. It’s my son.. we haven’t really been seeing eye to eye for the past few years..” Damian admitted staring at his glass.
“And you are sitting here in a hotel bar getting drunk instead of trying to fix things with your son?” The man said almost angry which caused Damian to look at him.
“I’m sorry. I only found my own son about a year ago. Well I knew the kid but I didn’t know he was my son. He is 20 now and happy and doesn’t really need his old man anymore. I guess I’m a little bitter about that.” The man admitted giving Damian an apologetic smile.
“So you don’t talk to your son anymore?” Damian asked curiously. He couldn’t really put his finger on the reason why but he liked this man.
“Oh no I do, I do. I just wished I would have seen him grow up, you know” the man admitted and Damian nodded his head, he knew exactly what he meant.
“Well I don’t think my son wants anything to do with me anymore. And I can’t say I blame him really. I haven’t exactly been a good father to him..” Damian sighed
“Kids can be very forgiving you know. How old is your boy?” the man asked and he seemed genuinely interested.
“Same age as yours – 20. And he’s hated me for about that time too.” Damian replied.
“I’m sure that’s not true.” The man said friendly.
“I’m sure it is. He said so. And I deserve to be hated I guess.. You see my son is gay and I had a pretty hard time accepting that when he came out.” Damian said glancing at the hotel’s front door once more silently praying and hoping that door would open and the person he was waiting for would walk through it.
“My son is gay as well, but I can’t say that bothers me. He shares an apartment with his boyfriend and they’re happy. That’s all I want for my son, for him to be happy. Isn’t that what every parent wants for their kid?” the man asked Damian.
“It is, and I do. When I got back in town in march I walked into this place called Java to get a coffee, it’s a cafe near here.” Damian explained quickly.
“Yes I know it, my son works there.” the man said friendly and waited for Damian to continue.
“He does? Maybe he knows my son and his boyfriend. My son’s name is Luc.. uh I mean Luke. Luke.. Snyder.” Damian said and the man started laughing. “Do you know Luke?”
“Know him? The kid is practically my son in law! I’m Dusty Donovan, Noah is my son. And I assume you are Damian?” the man who just introduced himself as Dusty asked him.
“Yes I am. What do you mean practically son in law?” Damian asked confused.
“Oh I don’t see those two ever breaking up again. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen two people so much in love.” Dusty explained smiling brightly.
“And I’m pretty sure Noah mentioned something about it being their anniversary yesterday so my guess is they had a night full of celebrating, if you know what I mean” he chuckled and patted Damian on the back.
Damian let his head drop on the bar. “You’re kidding me right? Tell me you’re joking, that I did not ruin their special night with my stupidity.” He said starting to bang his head on the bar.
“Hey don’t do that, you’ll damage the bar.” Dusty joked.” And whatever you did I don’t think anything could have ruined their night.”
“I sent him a DVD with a video message to him on it explaining everything I did and apologising for it.. If he watched it at all it would have ruined his night and that’s probably why he isn’t here right now.” Damian said sadly.
“Well I know Luke a bit and I know Noah. And I don’t think they would have let a DVD ruin their night. And I also think he will be here sooner or later. Noah will talk to him and make him see he has to talk to you.” Dusty told Damian who was staring at his drink as if it would solve all of his problems.
“I hope you’re right.” Damian muttered under his breath.
“I know I’m right. And if I remember correctly you were telling me a story.” Dusty said grinning.
Damian frowned trying to remember what he had been telling this man before he knew who he was.
“Uh yeah I came back to town last march to see my son. And I was trying to find the right time to go talk to him and think of what to say.. so I went to Java to think about that while having some coffee. But when I walked into the cafe I saw Luc.. Luke kissing another man and something snapped in me. He was smiling at that guy and had his arms around his neck and they looked happy together. That was until he saw me and I opened my mouth to tell him no son of mine would kiss another man. And that was the moment he told me he wasn’t my son. That as far as he was concerned Holden Snyder was his father”
“Yeah I remember them telling me about that.” Dusty said remembering how the two boys had been fuming with anger when he had had dinner with them that day.
“You.. you talk to Luciano a lot?” Damian asked feeling a wave of jealousy rush over him.
“Luciano?” Dusty asked confused. “You mean Luke? Well yes, he is dating my son and they live together..”
“Right.. of course.. you probably know everything that’s happened the past few months..” Damian said avoiding looking Dusty in the face.
“That you offered my son money to stay away from Luke? Yes I know that. And you’re lucky I didn’t know where to find you back then because I would have killed you.” Dusty said calmly but there was no doubt that he meant every word.
“So why am I still alive now then? Now you know who I am.” Damian asked curiously. What’s changed?”
“The boys have moved on with their lives and so have I.” Dusty explained sipping his drink. “And besides I don’t like kicking a man when he’s down.”
“I don’t understand how you can be so calm about it. if the roles were reversed I’m not so sure I could just sit here talking to you about our sons.” Damian stated.
“Well I am not you.” Dusty said and took another sip of his drink.
Damian didn’t know if the man had just insulted him or not and decided not to say anything.
The sound of a mobile phone ringing interrupted the silence between the two men.
“Oh that’s mine.” Dusty said and glanced at the screen and answered his phone.
“Hey kid. Nice to know you two are still alive after last night” Dusty joked.
“Yeah we’re very much alive, dad. Listen I’m going to put you on speaker ok? Luke and I have news and we want to tell you together.” Noah said sounding excited and Dusty could hear the smile in his son’s voice.
“Sure go ahead kid. Now tell me your news.” Dusty said smiling. He had a feeling where this was going and he couldn’t be happier.
“Hey Dusty, don’t say anything bad about me right now because you’re on speaker” Luke said jokingly.
“Don’t worry kid, I can control myself. Now what’s your news?” Dusty replied laughingly.
“Well you know how you always say I’m practically your son in law..” Luke started excitedly.
“Soon you can lose the practically because he will be your son in law.” Noah continued.
“Noah asked me to marry him last night. Luke cut in.”
“And he said yes!” Noah shouted happily.“We’re engaged dad!”
“Congratulations guys. I’m really happy for you. Why don’t you two come over to the Lakeview to celebrate with me. I’ll get a bottle of champagne and we’ll toast to your engagement.” Dusty said proudly.
“Uh sure dad but there is something we have to do first.” Noah said seriously all of a sudden.
“Oh tell Luke’s parents?” Dusty asked and noticed Damian snapping out of his thoughts at the mention of his son’s name.
“No. I mean yes we still have to tell Lily and Holden but that’s not what I was talking about.” Noah stammered.
“Nooaaah that can wait” Dusty heard Luke protest in the background.
“No it can‘t. I know you don’t want to do it but you have to. Let’s just get it over with” Noah argued.
“Guys, guys don’t you think it’s a little early to have marital fights? You’re not even married yet.” Dusty said and saw the astounded look on Damian’s face.
“Uh yeah sorry about that dad.. we’ll meet you at the Lakeview in about an hour ok?” Noah asked ignoring his fiancé’s annoyed look.
“Yeah that’s fine kid. I’ll see you guys in an hour, I’ll be in the bar.” Dusty said and hung up.
“Good news?” Damian asked trying to sound casual.
“I’d say so, yes” Dusty replied while put his phone back into his pocket and gave Damian a quick but wicked grin.
