JusticeGH's Encounter with Van
24 Hours in the life of a Vanatic: My way too long description of my trip to NYC with the VanHansis.net crew, and our chance to meet Van Hansis!
6:10am My alarm goes off (I’d only gone to bed three hours earlier after printing out my bus and theater tickets and some Nuke fanfic to read on the bus ride)
7:00amI stop at Dunkin Donuts, then the ATM and CVS. I buy a Fresh Ink Birthday card with a kid in Superman pajamas, which I will doctor into a Thank You card for Van. Since I’ve got a cold, I also buy some tissues. I normally would buy Kleenex, but I promised P&G in my letter that I’d switch to Puffs…so I do.
7:40amI arrive at South Station in Boston and get in line for my 8:00am bus to New York. I am excited to realize no one will be sitting next to me. I am pissed to learn we’ll stop in Framingham to pick up more passengers.
8:25am Someone sits next to me.
10:10amWe make a thoroughly unnecessary stop at Burger King and the girl next to me doesn’t even get out, so I can’t stretch my legs.
12:10pmI close up my the 14th comic book I’ve read since leaving Boston and just enjoy the ride through NYC. I love that since Van’s a comic book fan, that flies just fine here.
12:30pm Almost at 12:30 on the nose, my bus goes down 9th Avenue passing 50th St. I peer down wondering how many of the others are going to show up to go to the Cube. I hadn’t planned on going because I thought I’d be too late.
12:50pmI’m working my way out of Port Authority with a bad knee caused by the woman in front of me who thought it was ok to recline with a 6’1” guy behind her when Shirphie calls to see if I’ll be joining them on the Cube trip. I had already decided not to hold up the group or try to figure out how to find them on my own, so I just decline—I’ll see them soon enough!
12:55pm Crossing 42nd St. at 8th Avenue, I run into one of my old employees. SO WEIRD. 1:00pmI stop into the Toys R Us in Times Square to check their selection of Marvel Comics Action figures. Again, I can share this here because Van makes comics stuff acceptable.
1:15pmI fulfill a requirement of any NYC trip for myself…getting a pretzel from a street vendor. This one tastes WAY too much like a hot dog.
1:30pmI stumble across Midtown Comics, a world famous comics shop I hadn’t found before. I stop in to check it out. I’m very distracted, because, like any good crazed Van fanatic, I’m half convinced he’ll be looking for something, too. After all, we’re less than 8 blocks from the theater.
1:35pmI wander back to Port Authority to use the bathroom. It was being cleaned when I limped off the bus.
1:50pmThinking back to a post I remember reading on the site about someone seeing Van walk past while sitting in a Starbucks, I find the closest Starbucks to the theater. I get a caramel apple spice and sit in the seat at the window and write my thank you note to Van, also explaining why I’m giving him the comic I am. I slide it into the comic sleeve, and put it away, then stare at everyone walking by in case one of them is Van. None of them are.
2:15pmAfter circling the block to kill time and coming from the back side of the theater to scope out the scene before arriving, I spot the group! And, get this! I spot Van!! As I was coming around towards the group, I saw someone who looked just like Van walk through the courtyard towards 49th Street. I decide not to say anything to the group because I haven’t met any of them yet and I don’t want them to think a) he’s avoiding us or b) he should be chased. I walk over to the group and Shirphie introduces herself. From there, it’s a ton of quick introductions with real and screennames. I meet my Boston-area compatriots, Theresa and Tom. I meet the famous Roger. Everyone seems nice, and my initial nervousness subsides.
2:35pmWe head into the theater complex.
2:40pm We take our seats in the theater. My row includes Lyndsay, Jammi’s friend Darlene, then myself, and to my right, Roger. Roger greatly enjoys his peanut M&Ms, but quickly gets over the canned time-killer music. Shirphie is directly in front of me.
3:00pm The show starts. Since I’m still not completely sure I had already really seen Van, I start to get nervous that we’ll get the understudy. I have tickets to both shows already, it can’t be the understudy!
3:10pmI’ve already seen the show, but the exact moment of Van’s arrival escapes me. I’m getting more and more nervous it won’t be him! Finally, the moment of his dramatic arrival is here, I know because Roger pokes me. The door opens! There he is! Tony Parker! What!? Oh right...not yet. Damnit, Roger!
3:25pmThe door opens, and there he is! Lance Sussman, as played by VAN HANSIS! Phew. Unclench. Thank God. Across the theater, I feel Hansis nation exhale a sigh of relief and simultaneous gasp at his hotness. For the next hour, it’s a blur of Charles Busch madness and Van Hansis gorgeousness. I think repeatedly of Theresa in the seat I had during my first trip to the show, with her perfect view. Roger points out that we have a pretty good view too, as Van’s uber-short shorts drift dangerously low. I did not need this pointed out to me. I picked up on it pretty quickly on my own.
4:40pmThe show ends, and the rest of Hansis nation, having a pair, stands and gives Van an ovation at his bow, sort of scaring the crap out of him and leaving him touched at the same time. I received assurances from Jammi and Peter later that no one actually left him touched however. Which is good. I hoot and holler and clap with my hands in the air and finally join the standing O already in progress. We head outside to wait for Van. Determined not to repeat the lame cop-out of my first visit (when I saw Van at the souvenir stand before the show and did NOTHING), I move over with Lisa, Renee, Lyndsay and Laura where I will say something, damnit! Roger, Jammi, Theresa and the rest of the crew move over, too. We are a formidable crew! Van comes out and is clearly surprised by the turnout. I realize based on what he’s wearing, that that WAS VAN I saw at 2:15! He graciously poses for some pictures, answers some questions, etc. Seems a bit overwhelmed, but also very friendly and polite. After a couple of minutes, Jammi and Peter let Van know that we understand he likes to relax between shows, so we won’t take any more of his time…now. But we have presents, and we’ll bring them back after the later show. He’s surprised that we’ll be coming back to see the show again. Please note, I have once again DONE NOTHING. Though at least I gawked from a closer vantage point. After Van leaves, with help from an usher and I think Kelly’s mom, we get a few group photos on the stairs before the 3pm only show people depart.
5:10pm Those of us staying for the 7pm show accidentally walk well out of our way before finding the exit. Then, we proceed to block the box office in every possible configuration as we discuss the show, ATWT, Van’s general awesomeness, etc. Those who didn’t already have tickets for the 7pm show buy them.
5:30pmWe wander out into New York to find dinner. We find the Olympia (Olympic?) Diner between 48th and 49th Street on 9th Street. We’re all staring inside wondering if we can fit. The waiter waves us in. We get a large booth and a small booth in the back. I sit with Sean and Joanna and discussion turns to American Idol, Jericho, and Jon Bon Jovi, before veering back towards Van and ATWT. Someone (not from our party) takes an absurdly long time in the bathroom, so rather than just stand around awkwardly, I take out the camera and take a couple of pics.
6:30pmWe head back to the theater, meet Michael and Chris, and then head in to our seats. This time, I’ll spend the show alone, no Roger needling me about Tony Parker’s incredibly well tailored pants.
7:30pmVan comes back out on stage! Good news, team…we didn’t scare him off from the second show. Woohoo! This is my third time seeing the show and the second time in three hours…finally I can just be in full Van staring mode. Roger would be so jealous…Van seems to be having even more trouble with the short shorts and muscle shirt than he did during the first show. They are not working together to keep him covered. They might need to be named “honorary Vanfans of the day”, in recognition of their service.
8:50pm Now that I’m alone with nary a fellow Vanfanner within 40 seats of me, I finally have the courage to participate in our Van-ding Ovation <groan>. It’s lonely, but I’m never going to see the weird couple sitting next to me who laughed, but still had a look on their face like they’d come to the wrong show, so I don’t care what they think of me.
8:55pm I rush outside to wait for the crew. After a few minutes, only Lisa, Michael and Chris come out, and I remember that everyone else was behind me…they’ve already left. I turn the corner and find them all back in place outside the stage door. Van comes out and is still surprised at the volume of fans waiting for him. He greets some other fans who don’t seem to know us, but should if they really like him that much. They give him a gift. A less-than-all-there older gentleman with ear-flaps on his hat starts chatting with Van about western MA, saying Matthew Perry is from Williamstown. This sounds wrong to everyone, clearly including Van, but Van is gracious and plays it off, finally moving on from the man and greeting members of our crew again. A handful of people start asking Van for individual photos and autographs, and he’s so nice and gracious about it that I FINALLY get up the nerve to ask for a picture with him, which Renee is kind enough to take. I will later express to Theresa that everyone looks better with Van at their side. The picture comes out really well. More photos and autographs later, Shirphie asks Van to record his thank you message for VanHansis.net and Project Holiday Spirit. He does an excellent job with no prep time. Still more autographs and questions later, I once again manage to man up and ask him to sign my Playbill. Jammi and Peter present him with the gift bags for him and Jake. He offers to open them with us (so cool!). Lisa, in a stroke of brilliance, films him opening his gift bag. Including the moment when he takes out the comic I left for him. Peter and Jammi point me out to him and he thanks me personally!!! EEEEEEE. I manage to keep my composure. He’s clearly moved by the gift certificate to Forbidden Planet (another famous NYC comics store) and Jammi’s sweet words about why they got it. He once again expresses his gratitude over Project Holiday Spirit, always sounding amazed at how much money was raised and how quickly. More autographs and photos follow, and after seeing people from the site sweetly step up and get autographs for some of our site heroes who aren’t present like Andy and Mark (leading Van to remark that he catches up on the show by watching Andy’s stuff on youtube, so thank Andy for him!), reminds me that I have an extra Playbill, so I once again manage to talk to Van to get it signed for Nicole and Natalie, twins1729 who founded the Luke and Noah Wiki. And you know what? At this point it wasn’t even hard to ask, because he’d been so nice about it all.
At different points during all this, Van mentions that Lucinda has a significant storyline coming up, that he’d love to work with Daniel Hugh Kelley (Winston) or Paolo Siganti (Damian Grimaldi) again. He says he doesn’t see any reason why he wouldn’t be at the ATWT fan luncheon. He mentions that he’s been pretty unaware of mistletoegate since he’s stayed off the websites for the most part. He refers to Jake being great a few times, and mentions that he’ll see him on Wednesday and will give him his gift bag.
9:30pm Finally, after more than a half hour with us, Van gives hugs to almost everyone after Jammi asks for one (I didn’t get one…couldn’t work my way around people…but I’ll live with my great photo and my personal thank you). He comments that he’ll look like a bag lady walking home with all of his and Jake’s gifts and Lisa comments that he’ll be a cute one. We linger outside for a few more minutes, say our goodbyes, chat about coming back for the fan luncheon and then finally go our separate ways. Now that I know Tom and Theresa, I take them up on their offer for a ride back to MA.
9:45pm After some delays in the garage, we’re on the road, talking about how great a night it’s been, before moving on to heavier ATWT topics like flubbed lines (“Thanks for giving me the pair of loaner swimsuit”/anything said by Emma).
11:00pmAfter a SLIGHT 1 hour detour, we’re finally back on track and headed back to Boston.
2:07am Barbara who posts on VH.net and the Wiki, and already got a call from me earlier in the night telling her the basics of what had happened, texts me to tell me that video of Van finding my comic and thanking me by name has been posted on the internet. I giggle like a school girl.
3:00am We drop Theresa off at home.
3:35am Tom drops me off at home. After a much needed bathroom stop, I pop online and start IMing with Barbara and JayJ, and respond to twins who wrote to say that they were staying up to hear what happened, letting them know about their autograph. I start reading the posts on VH.net and the Wiki.
4:07amHaving already sent copies to Barbara and JayJ, I update my Wiki avatar to be the pic of me and Van. I proceed to stay up uploading photos and responding to posts, both from people who went, and people who didn’t. General consensus…Van is awesome.
5:30am I finally get my handful of photos posted online.
6:00amI send an email to my friends with the pic of me and Van, the video of Van saying my name, and the group photo with Van.
6:10am My alarm, still set from the day before, goes off…marking 24 hours awake!
6:20amI finally crawl into bed, knowing I have to get up again at 9:00am for church. But with a smile on my face, I drift off to sleep.
