Luke spooning him was the first thing Noah felt as he woke up a few hours later. The tall brunette smiled and turned to meet Luke's twinkling hazel eyes.

"Hey," said Noah settling comfortably in Luke's embrace.

"Hey yourself." Luke used his index finger to slowly traced Noah's eyebrows as if seeking confirmation that last night wasn't a dream.

"You know, when you and I were here the last time, I thought you only wanted to comfort me after what happened with Reg. But now. . ."

Noah offered a small smile before placing his arms around Luke's neck and giving a quick peck to the blonde's sweet lips.

"I did want to comfort you that night. But I was also searching for some way to tell you how I felt about you." He touched Luke's left cheek. "I fell in love with you the first time I saw you."

"What?" Luke raised an eyebrow, grinning from ear to ear.

"At first I didn't know where these feelings were coming from." Noah began to blush. "But I have to admit to feeling so jealous the first time I saw you with Rachel at the hospital. I thought then she must be your girlfriend or worse. . . your wife."

"Little chance of that happening." Luke chuckled "She's really not my type, you know?"

"Lucky me." Noah said with a grin as he pulled Luke on top of him. Their lips locked into a passionate kiss with Noah wrapping his legs around Luke and pressing him even closer.

Desperate for air, Luke broke away from the kiss. He leaned down and whispered in Noah's ear, "You feel sooooo good."

"And you, my special friend, have too many clothes on." Noah shoved his hands inside Luke's sleeping pants and squeezed his ass. Luke moaned and responded with another deep kiss.

As Noah attempted to grab the hem of Luke's T-shirt, Luke's cell phone started buzzing. Both men sighed at the ill-timed interruption.

"Don't get it. Please don't get it."

"I have to. It could be the hospital."

Luke reached over to the nightstand and pulled the phone from its charger.

It was his mom trying to find Noah. Luke apologized for not calling her but reassured Lily that Noah was alright. He promised he would drive Noah back to the farm before going to work.

As he was saying good-bye, Luke felt Noah's arms around his waist.

"Is Lily angry?" His lips lightly touched Luke's ear before dropping down to kiss his neck. Luke shook his head and leaned back against Noah.

"No. She was just worried." He twisted around to give Noah another kiss.

Luke felt so comfortable with Noah it scared him. After all, they hadn't known each other very long. But Luke pushed aside that thought preferring to live in the moment.

"Mhmmm, I could kiss you like this forever," Noah said, showering Luke with butterfly kisses. "When do you have to be at the hospital?"

"Not for another hour. Why?"

"Good. . . long enough to get you naked." Noah shoved his hands back under Luke's T-shirt and yanked it off.
Luke giggled. "How about we hop in the shower?" suggested Luke as his hands danced along Noah's naked back. "Then we can grab breakfast before I drop you off at the farm."

"I like the way you think Snyder," a flirty Noah answered as he followed Luke into the bathroom.

Having made love in the shower, Luke and Noah were now seated at the kitchen table enjoying breakfast and each other. What a difference from the first time they shared a meal in Luke's apartment. How they would have loved to have spent the rest of the day together.

But Luke had to get to work.

"Luke, could you drop me off at the park instead of the farm?" Noah asked as they cleared away the breakfast dishes. "I want to talk to Sam again."

"What are you going to tell him?" Luke asked nervously.

Seeing the worried look on the shorter man's face, Noah walked over and wrapped an arm around Luke.

"I'm going to tell Sam not to hold out hope that he and I are going to get back together. I am not going back to Lake Forest with him." He paused before adding, "I would like to remain friends with Sam. If that's OK with you?"

"Uhm? Sure." Luke looked away. "Fine."

Noah put his finger under Luke's chin and lifted it.

"OK. Look. I told you. Nothing will change my feelings for you."

"I know that." Luke sighed. "But I guess after everything that happened with Reg, I'm just scared of getting hurt again."

"I won't hurt you, Luke. I love you." Noah pulled their bodies together. "You know if it upsets you, I don't have to meet Sam today."

"No. I want you to. He's the only link you have right now to your past," Luke said, giving Noah a soft kiss on the lips. "Do you want me to stick around when you meet him?"

"I think I can handle it on my own."

Luke nodded. "But I have to ask for one favor. Don't tell anybody about. . ." Luke wiggled his index finger between them, "this. Us. At least not yet."

"What? Why not?" Noah asked with a confused look.

"Noah, I swear I'm not trying to hide you or anything like that. We just have to keep this relationship quiet as long as you're technically still my patient. I could get into a lot of trouble if anybody finds out we're....together." Luke explained. He caressed Noah's cheek and looked into his beautiful blue eyes. "Is that OK with you?"

Noah shrugged his shoulders. "I guess I can handle that if it doesn't last for too long."

"I love you."

"I love you, too."

Noah's hand rested on Luke's knee throughout the 15-minute drive from the apartment to the park. As Luke's Jeep Cherokee entered the parking lot, both guys caught sight of Sam leaning against his car. He waved as Luke pulled up.

Just before he opened the passenger side door, Noah grabbed Luke's hand and squeezed it. "I wish I could kiss you goodbye."

Luke smiled. "Me too."

Glancing up into the rear view mirror, Luke spotted Sam walking around to Noah's side. He quickly let go of Noah's warm hand.

"Hey Sam." Luke said. "Would you mind driving Seth back to the farm? I've got morning rounds at the hospital."

"Sure no problem." Sam said, nodding at Noah.

"Great. See you guys later."

Noah wasn't very talkative as the two men walked along the park path. When Sam tried to take his hand, Noah pulled back.

"Is something wrong?"

"We need to talk." Noah admitted, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"I thought we were," Sam tried to joke. But he knew "we need to talk" didn't mean good news was about to follow.

"I'm not going back to Lake Forest with you."

"Oh... well you know, that's OK. If you'd rather stay here, I could commute," Sam tried again to take Noah's hand. "We'll just find a place. . ."

"Sam, listen to me, please" Noah's voice rose sharply as he backed away from his former boyfriend. "There is no we."
"But Seth. Baby. You don't know what you're saying. We just found each other again. All we need is a little more time." Sam said.

"Just stop it, OK?" Noah took a deep breath. "I like you as a friend. But I've met someone else... here... in Oakdale."

Sam's eyes grew wide. "I can't believe this!" he yelled. "Who the hell is it?"

Sam's reaction frightened Noah. He knew Sam wouldn't take the news well. But this reaction was bordering on rage.

'He sounds like the guy... in my dream.'

"Look, these things... happen," Noah stuttered. "We're just not meant to be. I don't know what else to say here except I'm sorry."

"Yeah, right. You're sorry." Samuel muttered, moving closer to Noah. "And now you think I'll just let you live happily ever after with some new p'rick."

Noah wanted desperately to just turn and walk away. But he felt frozen in place. "Sam, why are you getting so angry? I don't understand."

"Of course, you don't, you a'sshole." Shoving his hands in his pocket, Sam quickly surveyed their surroundings making sure no one else was around. He grabbed Noah by the collar, twisted him around pinning his arms behind him and then pressed the cold steel of a small knife against Noah's carotid.

"What the h'ell are you doing?" a terrified Noah asked as Sam's iron grip tightened.

"You were going to turn me in!" Sam sneered, jerking Noah back against him. "I should have made sure you were dead before leaving you in that smoldering heap. I won't make the same mistake twice. I'll make sure you'll never tell anyone."

"Tell who about what?" Luke's face and their all too brief time together flashed through Noah's mind.

"Shut the f'uck up!" Sam yelled. "Still playing goody goody Seth Hansen, huh. I offered to make it worth your while to keep quiet about that defective computer chip. But nooooooo! You were hell bent on turning me in. I couldn't let that happen Seth. I tried to get rid of you before. Now I make sure of it."

"Police! Drop the knife, Smith." Jack Snyder with his Glock 22 trained on Smith stood some three feet off to the side of Smith and his captive.

"Or what Detective?" Sam teased, scratching Noah's neck with the knife.

There was no way Jack could shoot Sam without hitting Noah as well.

"Let's end this without anybody getting hurt." Jack started inching closer to the pair. "Just drop the knife."

"Nah... I don't think so." Samuel started cutting into Noah's throat. The tall man's face contorted in pain as he began to slumped down only to be held up by Sam.

"What are you going to do now, Detective?" Sam chuckled as he waved the bloody knife in the air.

"You f'uckin' bastard!"

Sam never saw the strike to the back of his head. Letting go of Noah, he crumbled to the ground.

A surprised Jack watched as Luke drop a small tree branch and rush over to Noah, who lay bleeding.

"Noah? "Can you hear me?" Luke quickly pulled off his shirt and used it to apply pressure to Noah's neck wound.

Jack checked on Sam. "He'll live. I'll call for an ambulance."

"Luke?" an ashen-faced Noah looked up. "How?"

"Shhhh. Don't talk." Luke said, stroking Noah's cheek with his free hand.

"You're here. But how?" Noah's eyes glistened. "I thought you have to be at the hospital."

"Jack and I never trusted Sam since day one. We've been watching you here in the park both yesterday and today. I'm so sorry I couldn't tell you."

"You saved. . ." Noah's eyes began to close. "So tired. . ."

"Noah! Stay with me. Noah!"

* * * * * * * *

While doctors in the emergency room at Memorial worked feveriously to save Noah, Sam's wound was quickly closed with a couple of stitches. He was sitting up on a gurney when Jack and Lt. Margo Hughes entered the cubicle.

"So this is Samuel Smith," Margo glanced at the patient and then back to Jack. "Has he been read his rights?"

"Took care of it myself just a few minutes ago."

"Ready to answer some questions then?" Margo leaned on the gurney.

"Can I get something for my head first?" Sam muttered. "I hurts like hell."

"All in do time." Margo said. "Mr. Smith, why did you try to kill Seth Hansen?"

"What?" An innocent-looking Sam looked up at Margo. "Who said I wanted to kill him?"

"Don't give us that!" Jack shook his head. "I heard you say it just before you started to cut his throat!"

"The idiot deserved it!" Sam lunged toward Jack. "He was going to turn me in to the authorities."

"What are you talking about?" Margo asked.

Sam spatted out a few details. Seth, working as a weapons analyst for a military contractor, had discovered a defective computer chip made by Sam's company in the GPS system used by U.S. tanks in Afghanistan. If the chip remained in place, the system could malfunction and endanger the lives of both soldiers and innocent civilians.

"Seth told me he found it and if I didn't go to the authorities, he would!"

"So you tried to kill him. . . twice?" Margo asked.

"Ye--" Sam hesitated. "I want a lawyer."

"Get him the hell out of here." Margo gestured to Jack.

As he putting the handcuffs on Sam, Jack leaned closer and asked one more question. "The things you told Seth about his past... Were they true or just a bunch of lies?"

Samuel snorted. "Who cares?"

"I do. So answer the f'ucking question!"

* * * * * * * * * * *

After hearing about Sam's confession from Jack, a tired and tearful Luke returned at Noah's bedside. Several hours earlier, surgeons had successfully closed Noah's neck wound, which had come within half a millimeter from his carotid.

But Noah had yet to awaken.

Luke was just starting to nod off in a nearby chair, when Noah began to stir. Leaping up, Luke rushed to grab Noah's hand.

"Noah, baby. Can you hear me?"

"Lu..." A small raspy voice was heard as the patient slowly opened his eyes.

"I am right here." Luke sat down and gently pulled Noah's hand away from the bandage covering his neck. "The surgeons were able to close the wound. Don't try to talk now. But you'll be OK."

Tears started to roll down Noah's cheeks. "Sam... knife."

"I know baby. It's OK... It's OK baby." Luke tried to reassure Noah as he rubbed his head. "You're safe now. Sam's never going to hurt you again. I promise."

"Lie...'bout...?" Noah searched Luke's face for answers.

Luke shook his head. "No. What Sam said about your past is true." He quickly grabbed a cup of ice chips and carefully placed a few on Noah's parched lips. "I'll tell you all about it later. But you need to rest now."
"Don't go."

"I'm not going anywhere. I promise." Luke slipped off his shoes and crawl up next to Noah placing a protective arm around him.

"Lu...Somebody might--"

"Shhh. Don't worry about somebody seeing us. Just close your eyes and sleep." Luke said, tenderly twisting one of Noah's curls around his finger. "We will get through this together."

With a hint of a smile, Noah drifted off to sleep.

* * * * * * * * * *

When Noah was released from the hospital, he moved permanently into Luke's apartment. Unfortunately, the same nightmare - Noah being trapped inside the hall as a screaming Sam sets the place on fire - plagued him for some time. But Luke was always there to comfort the sweat-soaked Noah with supportive arms and soothing words.

Having Luke by his side made all the difference in the world to Noah and his recovery. Over time the nightmares became less and less frequent until they finally disappeared, while large holes in his memory particularly his expertise in government relations returned. Noah completed his treatment with another psychologist.

Samuel Smith, meanwhile, confessed to twice attempting to murder Seth Hansen. But in a plea bargain worked out with federal prosecutors, he escaped the death penalty in exchange for testifying against his bosses at their trial on conspiracy to defraud the government. All were convicted and received the same sentence as Hansen - life without parole.

With the support of Seth Hansen's former employer, Luke's grandmother, Lucinda Walsh, offered Noah a position with World Wide Industries' government contracts division. The entire Snyder clan that night celebrated not only Noah's new job but also his official name change to Noah Snyder and Luke's partner.

Despite two very busy career schedules, Luke and Noah stayed committed to spending almost every free minute together making a lifetime of happy new memories.

* * * * * * * * * *

Four years later ....

"Tell me again," Luke whispered. "Why did we agree to do this?"
"Shhh." Noah raised his index finger to his lips and pushed Luke out the door. "You are going to wake them up."

Noah slowly closed the bedroom door and tip-toed along with Luke back into the living room.

"God, these kids are like little monsters." Noah sighed collapsing onto the couch.

Giggling, Luke scooted up against the tall brunette.

"Stop it," Noah playfully punched Luke in the arm. "If you remember, Dr. Snyder, it was you who said sure no problem when your sister asked if we could babysit Little Emma."

"What? Shouldn't Faith and Dustin enjoy one last Valentine's Day before their second little monster arrives. Don't you think they deserve it?" Luke said, with a sweet smile.

"Yeah. They do," Noah laughed. "But you left out one little detail in this master plan of yours."

"And what was that?"

"You also agreed to take care of Rachel and Maddie's daughter the very same night." Now life partners, the two women had adopted Haley, a two-year-old over the Christmas holidays.

"Well, at least having gone through this day reminds me why we decided not to have kids." He grinned and leaned against Luke kissing his lips softly. "Mhmm."

"Look, it's not that cold outside. Why don't we go out to the porch for a little bit before heading off to bed?" Luke suggested.

"Sounds good." Noah replied.

"Let me grab a couple of blankets and I meet you out there." He pecked Noah's lips. "Love you."

Luke and Noah had moved three years ago into the small farmhouse in Luthers' Corners.

Under a star-studded sky, Noah settled on the front porch. He breathed in the crisp winter air awaiting Luke's arrival along with the blankets.

"Wow, it's really a beautiful night," said Luke glancing up while sitting down next to his husband and spreading the blankets over them.

"It sure is." Noah replied wrapping his arm around Luke's shoulders and pulling him closer.

Noah had proposed to Luke their first night in their new home. Luke said yes even before Noah had gotten the whole proposal out. Since same-sex marriage was still not allowed in Illinois, the guys opted for a commitment ceremony at the farm.

Fast forward to tonight on the front porch swing, Noah turned toward Luke and looked him in the eye.

"Baby, there something I've been wanting to tell you."

Knowing Noah's body so well, Luke could feel him tense up. "What is it?"

"I have thought about this for a while. There's no easy way to tell you. So I'm just going to say it." Noah said. He placed his hand on Luke's cheek and squeezed it softly. "Luke, I love you so much. I wouldn't be here today if I hadn't meet you after... Sam. You healed me. You're my everything, Luke."

"I know baby. I love you, too," a glistening Luke replied. "So much."

"There's more I wanted to say." Noah took one last deep breath. "I remember. I remember everything from my past." When he saw the confused look in Luke's eyes he tried to explain. "The last bits started coming back slowly about a year ago. It turned out that at least Sam didn't lie about all that." He chuckled nervously.

"I ... I don't know what to say." Luke stuttered, trying not to cry. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because I decided it doesn't matter what happened in my past, Luke. For all intents and purposes, my life began the day you walked into my room on Memorial's burn unit. Guess that old saying true, you know."

Noticing Luke's tear-soaked cheeks, Noah gently used his thumb to wipe them away.

"You're amazing." Luke quietly said as he draped his arms around his husband's neck to pull him into a long, deep kiss.

'Noah's right about that old saying,' Luke thought. 'Love does heal all wounds.'
