Luke Snyder you make me happier than I’ve ever been and I love you more than anything else in this world. Will you marry me?

Luke couldn’t wrap his head around what had just happened. Noah had really proposed. And he had said yes. They were going to get married. When did you buy this? Luke asked looking from the ring on his finger to Noah’s smiling face and back. A few weeks ago. I bought it on my lunch break a few weeks ago but I wanted to get it engraved for you so I had to wait a few days until I could pick it up. Remember when I went to do the shopping for your mum and I took Faith with me? Noah said and Luke nodded in reply. Well we made a little stop-off at the jewellery store and she looked after it for me until right before dinner today. Noah said smiling. My little sister was in on this? Luke said laughing. Yeah well I couldn’t keep it at home now could I? You would’ve found it in no time. I wanted to surprise you. Noah explained. That you definitely did. Luke said and kissed his fiancé. And a very nice surprise it was. Come on let’s go back to the house. I want to tell my parents.

Ok girls time for bed. It’s getting late. Holden said getting up from the sofa to go put his daughters to bed. But dad Luke and Noah aren’t back yet. Nat said pouting. You can see them some other time. It’s getting late now. Holden said trying to sound strict. Oh come on dad I’m sure they will be back soon. Faith said. I really want to see them when they get back. What is going on? Noah winks at you and now you want to see them when they get back? Lily asked. Before Faith could answer they heard the screen door slam and Luke and Noah walked in hand in hand smiling from ear to ear. What are you two so happy about? Holden said looking at the smiling boys. Well.. Luke said looking at Noah who squeezed his hand as if to say: it’s ok tell them. We uh have news. Noah just proposed to me and I said yes. We’re getting married! Luke said holding up his hand to show his engagement ring. Oh my god you really did it! I’m so happy for you! Faith said and ran over to hug her brother and his fiancé. You were in on it weren’t you? Luke asked his little sister. Don’t worry Noah told me the whole story but when did you become such a good liar? He said laughing. Nat had made her way over to the boys and wrapped her arms around her brother’s neck. Can I be the flower girl? She asked. Sure Luke said smiling. Come here you two. Lily said after getting over the first shock. I’m so happy for you. You were already a part of this family Noah but now it will be official. My baby is getting married. She said as she kissed both boys on the cheek and hugged them tightly. Congratulations boys. Holden said calmly. Now come on girls, time for bed. Say goodnight to your brother and Noah. But dad Faith started. Don’t but dad me – it’s bedtime for you. The girls said goodnight and went upstairs followed by Holden. What’s up with dad? Luke said confused. I don’t know darling.. I’ll talk to him later. Don’t worry about it. You just got engaged! Go home, go celebrate! Lily said gently pushing the boys out the door.

Holden Snyder what is wrong with you? Your son tells you he is getting married and all you think about is getting the girls to bed?! They were so happy when they walked in here to tell us their news and when they left they were both so confused. All thanks to you! I think you owe me but most of all the boys an explanation! Lily said angry. I think they’re rushing into things. Holden answered his wife. You’re what?! If they think they are ready then who are you to say they aren’t? And besides they only just got engaged an hour ago! They might not get married for another year or something. Tomorrow morning you are going to call your son and his fiancé and tell them you’re happy for them that they got engaged and that you’re sorry for the way you acted tonight. I’m going to bed. Don’t bother joining me there. The sofa used to be good enough for your future son in law so now it’s good enough for you. Lily said and walked up the stairs slamming the door behind her.

Luke woke up the next morning with Noah’s arms wrapped around him and his head resting on Noah’s chest. Slowly the events of the previous day came back to him. Noah had proposed to him. They were engaged. A smile formed on his face. Morning gorgeous. Noah said as he noticed Luke had woken up. Hey you. I still can’t believe it. Luke said and softly kissed Noah. Well you better believe it, because I’m not planning on letting you go, ever again. Noah said wrapping his arms a little tighter around Luke. Hmm good thing I don’t want to be anywhere else but here. Why don’t we stay in bed the rest of the day? You have the day off and college can survive without us for a day. Luke said snuggling a little closer to his fiancé. Sounds good to me. Noah said and kissed Luke on the top of his head. Then the sound of the doorbell interrupted a moment for them once again. I’ll get it. Luke said and got out of bed put on a pair of boxers and a shirt and walked to the door. Dad.. what are you doing here? Luke said surprised. I wanted to talk to you and Noah.. but I think I came at a bad time.. Holden said looking at his son grinning. Huh what? No it’s fine what makes you think you came at a bad time? Luke said sleepy. Well the fact that you are still half asleep and you have your shirt on inside out make it kind of obvious Luke. Holden answered. Luke looked down and noticed the shirt he was wearing indeed was inside out but he also noticed it was Noah’s shirt. The one he had worn yesterday when he had proposed. Thinking of that moment brought a smile to Luke’s face and a dreamy look to his eyes. Luke? He heard Holden ask. Huh what? Luke asked. Can I come in? Holden repeated himself. Uh yeah sure. Luke said stepping aside to let his dad in. Sit down I’ll go get Noah.

10 minutes later both boys were sitting on the sofa. Noah with his arm around Luke who was sleepily resting his head on Noah’s shoulder. Holden had sat down in a chair and was looking at the two boys sitting on opposite of him. I uh I wanted to apologize for how I acted last night. I guess I was just a little shocked by your news. Holden said. Well everyone except Faith was dad. Luke said. Aren’t you happy for us? Yes of course I am. But I just thought you two were rushing into things. Holden confessed. Me and your mother had a talk last night and she made me see it really doesn’t have anything to do with me. If you two think you’re ready for this then I’m happy for you. Mum made you sleep on the sofa last night didn’t she? Luke asked with a grin on his face. Yes.. but that doesn’t mean that I don’t mean what I just said. Holden said trying not to sound too desperate for the boys to believe him. We know you meant it, Holden. And there are worse places to sleep than that sofa. I speak from experience. Noah joked. You know that’s what Lily said last night. Holden said sitting back in his chair all awkwardness forgotten. That if it used to be good enough for my future son in law it would be good enough for me. The three men laughed at that statement and Luke started to wake up a little more. Dad do you want some coffee? He asked. No thanks. I should head back to the farm. See if your mother will let me back into the house again now. Holden joked and got up and left. Why don’t we get dressed and head over to Al’s for breakfast? So we can tell Maddie about this. Noah said grabbing Luke’s hand and playing with the ring. Sounds like a plan. Luke answered.

About an hour later the boys were on their way to Al’s when Luke heard someone call his name. He turned around to see who it was and saw Kevin. Hey Luke, can I talk to you for a minute? Kevin said looking at Noah daring him to say something. Uh ok.. Luke said and turned to Noah and said: Baby you go in and order ok? I’ll only be a few minutes. You sure? Noah asked throwing Kevin an evil glance. Yes I’m sure. We’ll be right here for you to keep an eye on us. Luke said and kissed his fiancé. So do you think you’ll be alright without your watchdog? Kevin asked sarcastically. You know you’re not going to make me like you more by calling Noah my watchdog. What do you want Kevin? Luke said annoyed. I want to talk to you. You never called me back.. didn’t you get the message I left you? Kevin asked. Uh yeah I got it.. but I was kind of busy. Luke said. Busy getting engaged and celebrating. He thought. Busy huh? I bet your watchdog over there told you not to call me. Kevin said. Ok first of all I can make my own decisions and second will you please stop calling my fiancé that? Luke said now getting angry. Yeah that’s right fiancé. He continued as he saw the confused look on his former best friend’s face. Noah and I are engaged – as in we’re getting married. Don’t expect a wedding invitation. Luke said and turned around and entered the diner.
So did you and Kevin have a nice talk? Noah asked sarcastically. Hmm you could say that. Luke said grinning. I told him we’re engaged and that he shouldn’t expect an invitation to the wedding. Noah laughed and leaned over the table to kiss Luke. You know we haven’t really talked about it yet. Luke said. About the wedding.. what we want. You know we can only officially get married in California. But as much as I want to be your husband officially legally and everything I don’t think my family will be up for a trip to California with us. And I’m not so sure about that either. I want to get married to the man I love in a place I love. Does that make any sense at all? Luke asked. Yes it makes perfect sense. We can get married right here in the diner if you want – I’m sure Henry won’t mind. Noah joked. Noah I’m being serious. Luke said grabbing Noah’s hand across the table. I know, I know. I’ve been thinking about it too. And we can always just drive to California for the official part just the two of us and maybe Ameera and then come home and have a proper ceremony. Or just forget about all that official stuff for a while or forever and do things our way. Isn’t that what we said we’d do? Do things at our own pace our own way? Be unique. Noah said affectionately. Luke nodded and smiled as he thought back to the last time they’d had that conversation.
