Noah was taking that last of the box in the moving truck to the apartment. Part of him was glad to move but the other part of him wasn’t so happy about it. He was glad to get away from his last school they didn’t treat him right because he was gay and proud of it. They would constantly play pranks on him and occasionally they would beat him up. But he was not so excited because now he would have to make all new friends. They already talked to the principle to make sure that when Noah came out that the teachers would keep an eye on him just so that he wouldn’t have to go through what he went through back in Dallas. Noah was contemplating this when he walked to the apartment doors. He put the box down by the door and shut it. Noah walked further in the apartment side stepping boxes trying not to trip.
Noah finally gets to the bigger bedroom where he finds his mom hanging up family pictures. He leaned against the doorframe and was smiling at his mother. “You just couldn’t wait until we rested a bit before we start to unpack.”
Charlene jumped and spun around, “You scared me. Don’t do that again.” She leaned against the wall trying to catch her breath. She watched as Noah was laughing his head off. She pushed off of the wall and started to walk towards Noah, “Come here Noah, I will give you something to laugh about.”
Noah suddenly stopped laughing started to back up, “I don’t think you want to do that.”
“Oh, I have no idea what you are talking about,” Charlene responded acting innocently while still walking slowly toward Noah.
Noah backed up into the kitchen and grabbed the sink hose and turned on the water, “I am warning you I will spray this if you move one more inch.”
Charlene stopped walking, “Ok, I give up you can put the hose down.” She started to back up and Noah relaxed and turned to put the hose back when Charlene jumped and slammed into Noah. Noah still had a hold of the hose when she slammed into Noah so he brought the hose up and pushed the lever and sprayed her all over back. Charlene started to tickle Noah and made him drop the hose and fall to the floor laughing and trying to get away from her.
“Ok, truce….truce…get off of me please. I give up I promise. Scouts honor,” Noah said between giggles.
Charlene stopped tickling him and got up on her knees, “You never got into the boy scouts thing. Even though you begged me to no end until I finally agreed then almost a week later you begged to stop going.”
“Well all of my friends made fun of me when I joined and I didn’t want them to make fun of me anymore,” replied Noah while getting up off of the floor and pulling his mother up with him.
“Oh, and to answer your question before, no I couldn’t wait because you know how we are procrastinators and if we didn’t start right away it would have taken us forever to finally get our stuff put away. I wanted to get it done in time for you to go to school so you can find all of your stuff when you get ready in the morning,” Charlene said while walking back to the bedroom and pulled some more pictures out of the box, “Will you help me please? I can’t reach up to where I want it.”
Noah walked over and hammered a nail where Charlene told where to put it. They worked to get all of their stuff unpacked and put where they could. Sometimes they would have to remind themselves to keep going because they got distracted a lot. After two days of unpacking and rearranging their stuff Noah and Charlene plopped on the couch exhausted. “I just threw the last of the boxes in the recycling bin in back,” Noah breathed laying his head on her shoulder.
“I can’t believe that we got everything done in two days. It just blows my mind. Normally it would have taken us at least two weeks or more,” Charlene said patting Noah on the head.
“Well you wouldn’t let us take a break. Now I have to get my school supplies ready for tomorrow,” replied Noah as he got up and headed for his bedroom.
“I thought you had that done that already. I told you that you should have gotten your stuff ready,” Charlene said sleepily. She lied down on the couch where Noah was sitting just a second ago. Noah turned around and responded, “I told you that I was going to do it later. I didn’t want to accidently misplace something.”
Noah turned back as he heard his mother’s shallow breathing indicating that she fell asleep. He knew that he would have to come back out later tonight and guide her to her bedroom. He opened the door to the room that he is going to have for the rest of high school and 4 years of college. He closed the door and laid on the bed think about how grateful he is for having his mother save him from his father.
Col. Winston Mayer is not someone Noah wishes to know. But he had to visit him every once in awhile because it was what the divorce papers said. His father got married again shortly after the divorce and his eldest son has to go through all these procedures that a person from the army would go through. He was so glad that he was raised by his mother. Imagining his life the way it would have been if his parents were still together makes him shiver. His life would have been a mess too especially if he would have found out that he was gay. Noah smiled thinking of the time when finally was comfortable coming out so he told his dad without fearing what would happen. Winston freaked out, he tried to tell Noah that wasn’t, he tried to have Noah see a shrink but Charlene wouldn’t have any of that. So since Noah wouldn’t deny his life style, Winston told him, “I don’t want a gay son and until this phase is over with I want nothing to do with you.”
Noah was so happy that he didn’t have to see his father anymore. Even if Noah decided that he wasn’t gay anymore he wouldn’t tell his father just so he doesn’t have to visit him anymore. His mother was so supportive of him when he first came out. She had suspected it when Noah started to have an attitude. So when Noah came out and he was picked on by the jocks, his mom was the only friend he had for the longest time. He started to have a few friends just before he moved, that is another reason why he wasn’t happy about moving here. Now he had to go through the process of making friends, “I hope it’s not like my last school,” Noah said out loud.
After about an hour Noah got out of bed and helped his mom get up and get her in bed. He covered her up and leaned down to kiss his mother's cheek, "I love you so much." Noah backed out slowly and closed the door softly.
