“Luke, you don’t have to do this just because I did.” Noah said reassuringly to his nervous husband.
“I know I don’t have to, but I want to.” Luke said smiling.
“Ok but let’s get something to eat first then, you’ll be able to handle the pain better if you’ve eaten something.”
Luke sighed and let his husband lead him into Al’s.
“Noah I can handle pain, I’ll be fine, I’m just a little nervous. I will be fine, I promise.”
“Yeah, that’s what you said a few years ago when Damian came to town and you broke your arm. And that time we went away together for a few days and you twisted your ankle and ended up with your foot up in the air for two weeks.” Noah reminded him as they walked up to the counter and ordered their food.
“Those were just accidents.” Luke argued.
“And because this isn’t an accident it can’t go wrong?”
“Noah, I love you, but you worry too much. It’s not major surgery. You should know, you had it done too.”
“I know, I know. But I’m your husband now, I’m supposed to worry about you.”
“Really? I didn’t catch that part of your vows.”
“I doubt you caught any of it.” Noah joked
“Are you implying I wasn’t paying attention on our wedding day, mister?” Luke said, pretending to be angry.
“I’m not implying anything.” Noah teased as he paid for their order and sat down at the nearest free table.
“Are you going to join me or not?”
“Didn’t you call Jeff? I thought he said he wanted to come along when I went to get mine done.” Luke asked his husband.
“Yeah I did but he said he had to work.” Noah replied as they walked through town together.
“Work? I didn’t know he had a job. Where does he work?”
“I don’t know, he didn’t say.. and we’ve been away for 3 weeks Luke, that’s plenty of time for him to find something.”
“I wish we were still in Hawaii..” Luke said dreamy ignoring his husband’s comment.
Noah laughed and kissed Luke’s cheek.
“Look where we are. Are you ready babe?”
Luke took a deep breath and opened the door.
“Ready as I’ll ever be.”
They walked inside and Luke was immediately drawn to the photos on the walls.
“Maybe I should get that instead.” He said and pointed to a photo of a man with a giant eagle on his back.
“Do that and I’ll file for divorce.” Noah joked.
“Hi guys, how can I help you?” a familiar voice asked them.
They turned around and their eyes widened in surprise.
“Jeff!” Noah said surprised.
“What are you doing here? Do you work here now?”
“Yep. I had to entertain myself somehow while you two were getting a sun tan in Hawaii.” Jeff said laughingly.
He walked over to his friends and gave them both a hug.
“Welcome back to civilisation guys.”
“Thanks, did you get our card?” Noah asked.
“Yep, and the shop did too.” Jeff said and pointed to a small bulletin board with their card and a picture of Noah’s tattoo on it.
“You made quite an impression on Elena, she built you a shrine.”
“Well after today she can add another picture to that shrine.”
“Are you getting yours today?” Jeff asked Luke.
“Yeah, that’s the plan. Are you going to do it?” Luke asked nervously.
“No don’t worry, I’m not allowed to tattoo people yet. I’m just Elena’s little slave for now.” Jeff explained.
Luke let out a sigh of relief.
“Hey you don’t have to make it that obvious you don’t want me to do it.”
“No, no, that’s not it. I’m just a little scared.. and I’d feel more comfortable if someone with a little more experience did it.” Luke said quickly.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.. are you getting the same thing as your beloved husband?” Jeff asked.
“Yeah pretty much. I just want our wedding date in it too somehow.”
“Because that’s the only way he’ll remember.”Noah teased.
Luke laughed and punched his husband on the arm.
“Elena is due back from lunch any minute now so just take a seat guys, try and behave yourselves, I have to clean up in the back.”
They sat down on the bench while they waited for Elena.
“Maybe I should get something like your name in Japanese letters or something.” Luke said as he looked at the pictures on the walls.
“Or maybe a man with a beard and a boat.” Noah joked.
Luke gave him a confused look.
“What? Why? What are you talking about?”
“Noah’s ark...” Noah said laughingly.
“Oh right.. of course. Well some guy with a beard and a boat.. that’s not you. You broke up with Maddie years ago and you don’t have a boat either.” Luke joked.
The door opened and Elena walked in, carrying a large coffee.
“I’ll be with you in one second, I promise.” She said without really noticing who exactly was waiting for her.
“Is that her?” Luke asked and Noah felt the hand he was holding get sweaty.
“Yep that’s her. But don’t worry, she’s really nice” Noah said and gave Luke’s hand a reassuring squeeze.
“If you say so..”
“Hi I’m Elena, what can I do for you?” Elena said walking over to the boys.
Noah stood up, pulling Luke to his feet too.
“My husband would like to get a tattoo.” He said laughingly waiting for the moment Elena recognised him.
“Noah, right? Hi, so nice to see you again.” Elena said a few seconds later.
“And you must be Luke. His Luke.” She said as she shook Luke’s hand.
“Yeah I am.” Luke said smiling at the girl.
“I feel like I already know you after everything Noah told me about you the last time he was here.”
Luke blushed and looked at his husband.
“Don’t worry, he only said nice things about you.” Elena said quickly.
“How did you end up hiring Jeff?” Noah asked, changing the subject.
“That photo of your tattoo I took.. my boss saw it and she liked it. She asked me if I’d designed it, I told her I hadn’t and when I told her who had she made me turn the city inside out to find him. He’s my
assistant now.” Elena told them and giggled when Jeff bowed down in front of her.
“Yeah Noah I owe it all to you.” Jeff said overdramatically as he threw his arms around Noah’s neck and kissed his cheek.
Noah laughed and wiped his cheek.
“Jeff, he’s mine now, I’m the only one that gets to kiss him.” Luke said jokingly.
“Ok boys let’s get down to business.” Elena said clapping her hands together and taking her place behind the large glass counter.
“Right.. ok.. I uh.. want to get a tattoo. “Luke said starting to feel nervous again.
“Well then you’ve come to the right place.” Elena said friendly.
“Do you want to take a look at the books or do you have something in mind already?”
“Yeah, I have a design.” Luke said and grabbed his husband’s arm and rolled up his sleeve.
“I want the same, but I want our wedding date on it too.” he explained.
“Ok no problem, I can do that. Do you want the date in a banner underneath it or just written above it? Do you want numbers or the words?” Elena asked while Jeff started sketching.
“Oh.. uh.. I hadn’t really thought about that yet..What do you think I should do” Luke asked her.
“Does it matter what I think? You’ll have it on your arm for the rest of your life. You have to love it, not me.” Elena said.
“What do you think of this?” Jeff said handing Luke the sketch he just made.
“If you make it slightly larger than Noah’s, you can just have the date within the heart.”
“That looks nice..” Luke trailed off and bit his lip.
“It looks nice but you hate it.” Jeff said and rolled his eyes.
“I didn’t say that!” Luke said defensively.
“Come on boys focus, or we’ll be here all day.” Elena said as if she was talking to a bunch of little kids.
“Ok. I want the date underneath the heart. No banner or anything like that, just the date in simple numbers.” Luke said determined.
“No problem.” Elena said happily and went to make a stencil.
“Do you like it? Is it good enough to be stuck with for the rest of your life?” She asked jokingly a few minutes later when Luke was looking at the picture on his arm in the mirror.
“I love it, it’s perfect. But just so you know I’m very tempted to run out the door right now and never come back.” Luke said only half joking.
“Why? Am I that scary?”
“No but that thing you’re holding is.”
Elena laughed as Luke sat down and dipped then needle in the ink and got to work.
“Be gentle with me.” Luke said through gritted teeth.
“Noah come here and hold my hand.” He said, holding out his free hand for his husband to take.
Noah did as he was told and placed a small kiss on Luke’s knuckles.
“What did you think when Noah got home with his tattoo?” Elena asked.
“It scared the hell out of me!” Luke admitted.
“I only saw the bandage at first and I thought he’d hurt his arm”
“And then I removed the bandage and showed him the tattoo and he decided to get one too.” Noah explained.
“I wanted to get it done before the wedding but then I read the flyer you gave Noah and I decided to wait. I really wanted to enjoy our honeymoon in Hawaii without having to worry about a tattoo.” Luke told Elena.
“Smart move. So tell me about the wedding. How was it?” Elena asked, pausing for a second to look at the boys.
“It was great, the best day of my life.” Luke said smiling brightly
“He was a little out of it” Noah teased.
“Luke, the minister had to ask you twice if you’d take me to be your lawful wedded husband. I thought he’d changed his mind.” Noah said, directing the last part at Elena.
“It was all his fault really, he made me fix his tie right before the ceremony started and I got a little lost in the memories.” Luke told Elena.
“Oh yeah Noah told me it was a tie that got you two together.” Elena said and Luke nodded.
“Yeah.. one minute I was fixing his tie because he had to meet his father for lunch, the next his lips were on mine.”
“We were interrupted by my father though, he called me to ask me what I was doing that was so important that it was making me late.” Noah said and grinned.
“Did you tell him about you two?” Elena asked.
“Not that day no. I was so messed up, half in the closet, half in denial and completely in love with Luke and scared of my father. And I wouldn’t admit any of it.” Noah told the girl.
“And yet 7 years later you married me.” Luke said proudly.
“Yeah that was the easy part.” Noah joked and gently grabbed Luke’s chin and kissed his husband’s lips.
Luke smiled and rested his forehead against Noah’s for a few seconds after they broke the kiss.
“He always does that, he can make me forget everything with just one look or a kiss. He did it at our wedding too, the look he gave me when he said "I do".. I can barely even remember saying "I do" myself.” Luke told Elena.
“You had no problem hearing the minister though, when he said you could kiss me.” Noah said and smiled.
“Because that’s the thing I was waiting for. That was the only thing on my mind. Well.. that and my vows.” Luke replied.
“Did you write your own vows?” Elena asked
“Yeah we did. And Noah still hasn’t fully recovered from it.” Luke joked.
“Luke is the writer of the family, I am most definitely not a writer. It seemed so romantic when we were planning the wedding to write our own vows, but actually writing them was a nightmare.” Noah explained when he saw the slightly puzzled look on Elena’s face.
“His vows were still beautiful though.”
Noah made a face but didn’t argue with Luke. They’d been playing the your vows were better-game since their wedding night, one month ago.
“Ok, I’m done.” Elena said cleaning Luke’s arm.
“What? Already?” Luke said surprised and looked at his arm.
“I can go on for a while and give you a whole sleeve.. but it’ll cost you.” Elena joked.
“Go check it out in the mirror, see if you like it.”
Luke got up and walked to the mirror, never letting go of Noah’s hand.
“What do you think?” he asked Noah.
“It’s perfect, just like you.” Noah said lovingly.
“It is perfect. I love it.” Luke said and turned around to hug Elena.
“Thank you. It might be my first tattoo but I know it’s the best I’ll ever get.”
“Aww thank you so much. I can see why you married him Noah, he’s a charmer.”
“You know what I just thought about?” Noah asked Luke as he gently removed the bandage from Luke’s arm a few hours later.
“No, my mind reading skills are not what they used to be.” Luke joked.
“Oh very funny. Good thing I didn’t marry you for your sense of humour.” Noah replied and stole a kiss.
“I was thinking about this film..” he trailed off and Luke rolled his eyes.
“Of course, I should’ve known, mister director, of course you were thinking about a film.”
“I was thinking about The Tie That Binds, do you know it?” Noah asked ignoring his husband’s teasing.
“Doesn’t ring a bell.. Have we ever watched it? Have you ever made me watch it?” Luke asked.
“I can’t remember right now.. but the title just popped in my head. It kind of fits for us you know.”
“Because it was your tie that brought us together?” Luke asked and Noah nodded. “I think you need to do a remake of that film now. One for us.. and call it The Tat That Binds!” Luke said and both boys
burst out laughing.
