Noah straightened his jacket, smoothed down his hair and looked at himself in the mirror. Everything was perfect. For once he wasn’t running late, so he took his time. He was going to see Luke and he wanted to look his best. He had been longing for him all day, more today than the other days. He always saw Luke’s face in his mind when they were apart. It was all he thought about. He was going crazy about him. He couldn’t live with these feelings anymore without doing something about it.

He picked up the roses that were on the dresser and looked in the mirror one last time. He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. He could do this. He was nervous, but he was going to do it. He longed for Luke so much, he felt like his heart would burst with love.

Stepping out into the dazzling light of the Autumn sunshine, he felt the wind caress his face with icy fingers. The sun cast a feeble warmth on his back as he stood, filling his senses.

Along the streets, oak and elm trees were turning rich shades of crimson, gold and amber and the smell of earth and woodsmoke hung in the air like a fond memory. Noah looked up into the sky, crystalline blue with not a cloud in sight. He felt overwhelmed by the beauty of the day.

Couples walking along hand in hand made him think of Luke and his heartbeat quickened. He inhaled deeply, remembering every detail so he could keep this memory forever in his heart. He set off with purposeful steps.

He went through Old Town, trying to protect the roses from the wind, he wanted them to look perfect for Luke. He wasn’t really sure what to say to him. How do you really say things like that to your greatest love? Once he would get there he felt sure things were going to be all right, it was always the anticipation that was the worst.

Noah stopped at his first destination and opened the door to the jewellery store. He had called them way too many times in the last couple of weeks to make sure his order would be ready for this day; the staff all knew him by name. But he couldn't help himself, he was so nervous. Would Luke approve of what he was about to do? Deep in his heart he knew he would - Luke knew him better than Noah knew himself, but he couldn’t help to have mixed feelings about it.

“Can I help you sir?” the jeweller looked up from arranging a case of engagement rings.
“Yes, I'm Noah Mayer...here to pick up...”
“Ah, Mr. Mayer, of course” the man interrupted him. “I have your order right here.”

He reached under the counter, Noah looked anxiously on as the man opened the small box and presented it to Noah. He felt his heart tighten when he saw it.

“Is it to your liking sir?” the man asked politely.
“It's ...” he took a deep breath, “absolutely...perfect.” His voice caught in his throat.

He paid hurriedly, thanking the man more times than was really necessary, then hurried on - he didn’t want to be late, and the sun had already begun to set.

It was getting colder and he wrapped his jacket tighter around him. He looked up at the trees again, they seemed so magical. The leaves still clung to the trees with all their might, just like he would always hang on to Luke. He was his soulmate, the love of his life, now and forever.

Just as he was back in thoughts about how much he loved Luke he saw a leaf fall, he followed it with his hand as the wind took hold of it. The leaf danced on the breeze, leading him toward their meeting place. Although it was cold right now, he knew that once he got there Luke's love would warm him...

He reached the farm and decided he would go in to see Lily and Holden before he went to Luke, as it had been such a long time since he last saw them. They were the parents he had always wanted, and they loved him like a son. They had been great to him and Luke, and especially to him the last few years, he depended on their guidance and support and looked at their marriage as an aspiration for his own.

He knocked on the kitchen door before entering. Both Lily and Holden sat at the kitchen table reading the newspaper. Lily immediately got up and rushed over to Noah when he came in, Holden wasn’t far behind.

“Hi honey!!” She was so happy to see him and hugged him as tight as she could. “It’s been too long.”
“I know, I’ve been so busy getting ready for today... well, you know.”
“Don’t worry, you’re here now, and we’re so happy to see you.” Lily said, giving Noah’s shoulder a comforting squeeze.

Lily let go and Holden stepped in to give Noah a welcoming hug as well. He was so glad to be a part of this wonderful family.

“Are you going to see Luke straight away?” Lily asked.
“Yes…”
“I’m sure he’s waiting for you.” She stroked Noah’s chin ever so lightly. She noticed the roses in Noah’s hand. “Those are gorgeous, he’ll be pleased.”
“I hope so…”
“He will.” Holden said reassuringly. “Did you go to the jewellers?”
“Yes,” Noah replied, “and it’s perfect.”
Holden knew what Noah had to do. “Just go now, go on, don’t let us hold you here. We’ll be here later if you want to come back.”
Lily smiled. “You’ll be fine.” The love in her eyes gave Noah the strength he needed.
“Ok.” He gave them one last grateful look before he went out. “Thank you.”

Noah walked through the forest towards the Snyder Pond. In the gathering dusk, shadows deepened and shapes melded into eachother. The first twinkling stars peeked through the canopy of the forest.

Noah was in the deepest part of the wood, where the trees grew so close that not a breath of wind reached him and everything was peaceful and still, like a holy place. He suddenly felt a shiver run up his spine, as though he was being watched.

He turned around, but saw nothing. He continued on walking but he could still feel someone behind him. Normally he would have been worried, but he knew who it was all too well. He stopped and without turning to look, he spoke into the deepening gloom of the forest.

“Luke?”
“That’s my name,” he whispered in Noah’s ear.

Noah spun round to face him, his eyes bright with happiness. He looked deep into his beautiful brown eyes, into their familiar warmth.

“I knew it was you.”
“So you weren’t even the tiniest bit scared?” Luke teased him and grinned broadly, warming Noah’s heart.

“What are you doing here already? I thought we were meeting at the pier.”
“I couldn’t wait any longer.”
“You’re so impatient.” Noah sighed in mock exasperation.
“Only because you’re always late!” laughed Luke.
“For your information, I went to say hi to Holden and Lily. I still need to go to the lake though.”
Luke looked in Noah’s eyes and understood. “I know.”

They walked slowly, side by side. Noah was wrapped up warmly, but Luke didn’t seem to feel the biting chill in the air. His hair shone silver in the fading light, his skin glowed. He wore his favorite striped sweater, the green and burgundy one Noah had given him one Christmas, that was starting to get a little frayed at the edges.

“So, tell me what you’ve been up to,” asked Luke, walking beside Noah. His footsteps made hardly any sound on the soft ground of the forest floor.
“Don’t you know already?” replied Noah, raising an eyebrow.
“No, it’s hard to keep up with everyone’s lives these days.”
“Well I’ve barely left the studio, there’s so much to do.”
“It’s almost finished, right?” Luke smiled. The movie was Noah’s baby.
“Yeah, the final scene is taking forever though. I can’t decide the ending.”
“It will come. I know you’ll get it right.”
“I’m so glad you have faith in me, even when I don’t.”
“I’ll always believe in you. You’re going to do amazing things.”

They continued on in silence for a while, listening to the soft rushing sound of the leaves in the trees. “It sounds like the ocean,” said Luke.
“I was just thinking the same,” smiled Noah.

They still had moments like this, even after all the years they had been together.

“I saw Ameera and Casey this morning. Casey showed me something, a ring, he’s going to propose.
“What!? That’s great.”
“Yeah, things are really working out for them…”
“I actually knew they would.”
“I’m sure you did.”
“And Faith?”
“Faith is ... really happy. She’s so excited about going to Europe.”
“She’s going to love it over there.”
“I’ll worry about her every day. I wish I could see things the way you do.”
“You’ll get there,” he said ever so softly.

The day had melted into darkness as they approached the small pier that stretched out over the Snyder Pond. The boards were uneven and warped with age. They walked to the end and Noah gazed out over the water, lost in his thoughts. Standing behind him, Luke rested his chin on Noah’s shoulder but he didn’t seem to notice. The blackness of the sky was mirrored in the pond, making them feel like they were floating in an abyss, adrift in some dark universe.

“You've always been the one to keep me together. You've made me in to who I am. I don't know how to live without you.” Noah’s eyes filled with tears. “You're my soulmate.”

Noah looked at his blond-haired angel. An ethereal glow seemed to shimmer about him as he stood there, bathed in the moonlight. He loved the way Luke's face shone when they were at the pier; his eyes bright, his hair ruffled by the breeze. Noah wished he could look at that face every day for the rest of his life. He wanted so badly to be able to touch it again, hold his hand to Luke's chin, but he couldn't.

“I’ve missed you... every day.” Noah whispered the last words.
“I haven't been gone that long.”
“It always seems like forever when I can’t see you.”
“You see me now.”
“It’s not enough. If you can’t be here with me, then I want to be there with you.”

A profound sadness darkened Luke’s gaze. He longed to touch Noah, to tell him everything would be alright.

“Please don’t say that. Don’t think it, don’t wish for it. You need to be here, you’ve got to live life for both of us. Promise me you will.”

Noah turned and looked down at the lake, down forever into the endless black dusted with stars. The moon trembled on the glassy surface. He took the box out of his pocket and held it tightly in his hand. Luke looked on, his eyes filled with starlight. Noah let out a heavy sigh as he looked at the box. His soul ached.

“It's time Noah. Let me go.”

As he started to open the box, a small, sad smile touched Luke’s lips and he closed his eyes.

Noah turned round and Luke was gone.

The grief swept over him like a wave, closing round him, extinguishing all light and life. He let himself be carried off by it, abandoned himself to it one last time. He looked down and with a shaking hand he slid the gold band off his finger. From the box he took out a simple gold chain, and threaded it through the ring. The tears came rolling as he fastened it round his neck.

Luke would always be wrapped around his heart but it was time to loosen the grip. Ever since Luke's accident he had been walking around closed off from the world, wrapped in a blanket of grief. But he couldn't do that anymore, it was time to let go... Luke wanted him to.

He tore the petals from the rose he had brought, looking at them through a blur of tears. He watched them flutter down onto the surface of the dark water, at the same place he had scattered Luke's ashes two years ago. His heart broke for the last time.
