Driving back down to Oakdale wasn't a huge problem as expected, but more of an annoyance. I'm not a big fan of car rides to begin with, and it was times like those that I wished I owned a van.
Then again, the gas prices. There always seems to be a con to everything.

My mother welcomed me with the usual family hug and kiss, followed by dad's typical and awkward back-slap, and then leaving to avoid a conversation. The rest of the family either didn't notice or didn't care (the latter was most likely true), considering there was no little children scrambling around. Although, they weren't really children anymore. I'm an old fart, so they must be pre-old farts.
I realize that I'm a terrible brother. I can't even remember how old my siblings are.

"So Luke, I want to hear all about it."

Lily, my mom, still had the same appearance as when I was a teenager. It's actually unfortunate; I look the same age as my mom. Damn it.

"Well, throughout the entire thing I was miserable. You have absolutely no idea how awful some of those men were. There was one who had a dead wife following him around, and another who brought up how much he was in love with his ex. There was even a man who was married, Mom! You'd think when you go out on a date you leave the wedding band behind, but I guess people really don't give a shit if you're in a relationship or not these days."

My mom scolded me with her eyes. "Luke, come on now. I'm sure there was someone who was halfway decent."

Remembering back on my night, I smiled at the remembrance of the blue-eyed brunette. "Well, I suppose it was worth going to in the end." When she didn't question me about it, I went on. "His name was Noah. He was nice."

My mom smirked. "Just nice?"

"I like him."

"You like him?"

"Yeah, that's what I said."

Sometimes my mother wasn't interested in what I thought. She rarely was. She was more intrigued with what happened, and how she could skip around in a circle and yell, 'I told you so' at every family dinner in the future.

"Does he have a lot of money?"

What? "I don't know. Why would that even matter to me?"

She shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe he just needs a sugar daddy."

Oh god. My mother. "Mom, he doesn't even know how much money I make. Besides, I told him I only write for the paper. It's not like that's a well-off job."

"I know! Maybe he just knows our family, you know? I just don't want anyone taking advantage of my little boy." She pinched my cheek and made her way over to the kitchen sink. "So, what did you guys talk about?"

I tipped my head to the side in thought. "Nothing important. Just the little things - like our favorite movies and stuff."

"That must have been some talk about movies."

I furrowed my brows. "What do you mean?"

She turned off the sink and swung around to face me. "You told me you liked him, so if all you talked about was the 'little things', then I don't understand what's so great about him."

She obviously didn't understand. "Maybe if and when you meet him you'll figure out why he's aweso."

My mom raised a brow. "Aweso?"

"Yeah. There's no awesome without 'me', remember?"

To this, she actually let out a laugh. "Wow. That was really dumb, Luke. I'm hoping you didn't tell any of your lame jokes to this Noah character."

I shook my head and grinned. "No, mom. I was able to control myself. You should have seen me. You would've been so proud."

"So, when are you going out with Noah again?"

"I don't know."

"Did you get his number?"

I paused. "I...no. No I didn't."

"Well, they give you contact information if you request it, don't they?"

There are also times like these in my life where I just want to cuddle up in a corner with an unhealthy supply of junk food and cry. You'd think someone like me, who - let's face it- is almost beyond the point of desperation, wouldn't lose something as important as a note-card where it gives instruction on how to get the information of the person (people) of your choice.
You would think I wouldn't lose it, but I did.
I think I threw it away in the trash accidentally.

I was starting to panic. "Mom, I don't have the card anymore. I threw it away...I didn't mean to. It was just, I thought it was something else, but now that I think about, it was totally the card they gave us. Oh shit. Fuck, mom. This is not good."
I usually try to keep my swearing to a minimum when around the family. This clearly wasn't the time.

"Luke, calm down. Did you find out his last name?"

Fuck. "It was something like...Manor. No, Mayor. Yeah! It was Mayor."

"Mayor? As in, 'o-r'?"

"Yeah...or...no. Maybe. I'm not sure, mom!"

My mom was apparently much calmer about the whole situation. "Let's just chill for a second, okay?" She placed a hand on my shoulder for comfort. "Why don't you go back to another one of those speed-dates? If he likes you, I'm sure he'll be there looking around for you. You just have to calm down - I'm sure he won't want to be with someone who constantly freaks out."

She was right. I was dramatizing the whole situation. If Noah was truly interested, then perhaps he would come and find me. I figured I'd go to Chicago and find him waiting for me at that bar, and then we'll discuss our 'understandings'.
Not that I'm thinking about that. I barely even know him, for heaven's sakes.
God, you're such a fucking pervert Snyder.

"Okay. I'll just go back to Chicago. However, I swear that after that, that it will be the end of my speed-dating days. I am done!"

My mom clapped her hands daintily and hopped over to the family room. "Alright! I'll just sign you up for another one of those suckers and you'll be on your way back to Chicago to re-meet your movie man."

A small smile escaped as I anticipated the future. I also surmised that Noah would turn out to be the man I thought he was; five minutes isn't exactly a decent amount of time to get to know someone, or in my case, investigate to make sure they're not insane.
Also, I had to find out his last name.
My money is on Manor or Mayor.

Two in one day! =p

I'm actually visiting my father this week, so I have a lot of free time.
So, this is what I do with it. Ha.

Hope you enjoy!
(By the way, thanks to Stevie for convincing me to make this a multi-chapter story, and even offered to write it with me! Round of applause for her!)
