Chapter 5

Holden drove down the road. Luke frantically looked out of the window for Noah's truck. "I don't see anything."

It was starting to snow harder. "Are you sure this is the way that you went?"

Luke nodded. "Yeah, I think the turn off is just ahead."

Holden looked over at his son. He hadn't realized just how deep Luke's feelings ran for Noah until now. "It's really starting to come down."

Luke bit his lip. He didn't want to think about the snow. All he wanted to do was concentrate on Noah. "There's the road. Turn here."

Holden turned on to the side road. "It's really dark out here. Do you see anything?"

Luke shook his head and pointed the flashlight out the window. "No. Maybe if we got out and tried on foot?"

Holden shook his head. "Luke we don't even know if this is where he went. We can't go wandering around out here. There are all types of drop-offs. We won't be able to see them."

Luke raised his voice. "We have to do something. I'm not going to stop looking until I find him."

Holden stopped the car. "I know Luke. We'll keep looking, but with the storm, I'm afraid it is going to be too difficult tonight."

Luke had tears streaming down his face. "No, we can't stop looking until we find him. I love him Dad. I can't lose him. He's everything to me. Don't you understand."

Holden put his hand on his son's shoulder. "I understand son, but we don't have the equipment to search in these conditions."

Luke shrugged away from his father. "No. We have to keep looking."

Holden looked at the terrified look on his son's face. "Luke. If we stay out here much longer. We are going to get trapped too. We are going to have to wait until Jack can get a search team together."

Luke shook his head. "...but that won't happen until tomorrow afternoon. By then he could be.." Luke couldn't bring him self to think it, let alone say it.

Holden once again put his hand on his son's shoulder. "Luke, we have to hold on to the hope that he is okay. He might not even be out here. Maybe someone else found him. There are other possibilities."

Luke looked at his father. Tears still in his eyes. "We both know that none of those are likely to be true."

Holden shrugged his shoulders. "I guess, but we don't know that they aren't."

Luke let out a sigh. "I suppose."

They had only been sitting there a few minutes and the truck was covered with snow. "We better start heading back."

Luke bit his lip and sniffled. "Okay."

Jill took the tray from Noah. "Are you feeling better?"

Noah nodded. "Yeah. I'm warming up, but I need to go to the bathroom."

Jill was surprised. "Oh. Okay, just a minute. I'll get something."

She left the room and came back with a man's robe. "I just assumed you were here alone."

Jill handed the robe to Noah. "I am. The robe was my husband's"

Noah took the robe. "Oh, where is your husband?"

Jill looked down at the floor. "He died a year ago."

Noah face sank. "I'm sorry."

Jill smiled. "Don't be we had 5 good years together. We met in high school."

Noah smiled. "You seem so young to have had something like that happen to you."

Jill shrugged. "I guess it has forced me to grow up. Enough about that, let's get you to the bathroom."

Noah put on the robe. Jill turned her back. Noah removed the covers and put his feet on the floor.

Jill turned back around. "The bathroom is right over there."

Noah pushed off the bed and to his surprised fell to the floor. "Ow, my leg."

Jill ran over to Noah. "What's wrong."

Noah pulled his legs from underneath his bottom. "My leg is killing me."

Jill looked at Noah's leg. It was swollen. "Oh my God. It's all red. It might be broken. Do you think you can stand? Here lean on me."

Jill put Noah's arm around her shoulder and helped him back onto the bed. "Ow. Why didn't that bother me before."

Jill shrugged. "You were in bed. Until you put your weight on it, there was no way of knowing."

Noah nodded. "How will I get to the bathroom now?"

Jill put his arm around her again. "I will have to help you. We'll do it together this time, but we will have to come up with something else for later."

Jill helped Noah into the bathroom.
