Luke sat sulking. His only pair of maternity jeans wouldn’t zip up. He was waiting for Noah to comeback from Chicago. Noah had a call during work from a very emotional husband complaining he was an obese ugly walrus. Noah told him that wasn’t true. Luke explained that he had nothing to wear for the dinner with Damian, Lily and Holden. Noah, not wanting to be in Luke’s bad books for suggesting he wear some baggy pants instead of jeans, he offered to drive all the way to Chicago, buy Luke some new jeans, then come home in time for the dinner.

Melody came out of her bedroom in a lilac dress.
“Look Daddy, I’m a princess.”
Luke’s face beamed, as his daughter did a little twirl, swinging her casted arm.
“Is that the dress Grandma Lily bought you?”
“Mmm hmm,” Melody nodded, “Do I look pretty?”
“You look beautiful,” Luke squeezed Melody, being careful of her arm and gave her a big kiss.
Noah came through the door, his hair-soaking wet.
“Ew, it’s miserable out there. Pouring down with rain.” He hung his coat up, but stopped dead when he saw Melody.
“Is…is that my daughter?” He asked in amazement.
“Hi Dad, did you get Daddy’s things?”
Noah snapped out of it, “Er, yeah I did.” He placed the bag on the side, before turning to Luke both grinning at each other, “Oh my god. Luke...”
Luke got a lump in his throat. “Our baby is growing up.”
“Come here sweetie.” Melody trotted over to Noah, who was crouched down, arms wide open. Noah smothered her in affection. He picked her up, and sat her on his hip, dragging Luke closer.
Luke wiped Noah’s wet face.
“Sorry you got drenched in the rain.”
“No need. As long as this dinner goes well, it doesn’t matter.”

Luke checked on the steak in the oven. He stirred the steaming vegetables and turned over the sautéed potatoes.
“I will not burn this, I will not burn this.” Luke chanted quickly and quietly to himself. He searched the refrigerator for the chocolate sauce for Melody, Luke and Lily’s triple chocolate fudge cake. He shook the bottle to check if there was any left. Suddenly the cap flipped, spilling chocolate all over Luke’s new clean shirt.
“Oh…crap!” Luke started to cry, running into the bedroom to find a clean shirt that would fit him and covering his bulging stomach.
Noah took the twins off his lap and sat them with their big sister.
“Mel, watch them for me, while I go see what’s up with Daddy.”
“OK Dad.”
“And if the doorbell rings, shout out for me.” Noah made his way to the bedroom.

“Knock knock.” Noah poked his head round the door. Luke turned over in the bed, his back facing Noah. Luke had a pillow tucked into his chest and was sniveling every so often. Noah walked into the room, closing the door gently behind him.
“Honey, what happened? Did I get you the wrong type of jeans?” Noah made his way to the side of the bed.
Luke turned back over, looking up at Noah.
“No,” He sniffed, “They’re great.”
“What’s up then?” Noah sat down next to him, rubbing his hand over Luke’s knee.
“It’s just…I can’t…AHH, WHY CAN’T I JUST SAY IT, INSTEAD OF CRY ALL THE FUCKING TIME!” Luke wailed, crying into the already wet pillow. Noah lay down next to Luke, pulling Luke’s onto Noah’s chest. Noah rubbed circles on his husband’s back, knowing that it would calm Luke down. Once Luke had stopped crying, Noah sat up with him and helped Luke find a clean shirt.

Luke pulled the shirt over his stomach, looking at himself in the mirror. Noah watched him and couldn’t help but want to hold him. He slid his arms around Luke’s waist, Luke falling back into Noah’s chest.
“You OK now?” Noah said tenderly in Luke’s ear.
Luke just simply nodded, turning the rings around on Noah’s finger.
Noah stroked his hand over Luke’s bump.
“Don’t get stressed out about the dinner. If something goes wrong-“
“No Noah, something will go wrong. What with my Dad already annoyed with me-”
“He’s not annoyed.”
“Well, he sure as hell didn’t look happy when I told him I was letting Damian have one last chance. Oh Oscar, please don’t start now!” Noah could feel his son moving inside Luke against his hand.
“Oscar is just reminding you that he is there. You both have been through a lot together,” Noah parted Luke’s hair so his eyes could be seen, “Don’t get all worked up, I’ll handle it OK?”
Luke agreed, turning and putting his arms round Noah. “I love you.”
Noah closed his eyes, slightly swaying with his lover, “I love you too.”

“Would you like some potato salad Lily?”
“Yes please. Thanks Noah.”
The seating arrangement was as follow; Melody sat at the top of the table, her usual spot. Noah and Luke sat either side of her, and opposite each other. Next was Lily opposite Damian. Damian sat next to Luke, Lily next to Noah, and Holden at the end, looking annoyed as usual. The twins were in the playpen after already having eaten their dinner, Noah playing with his toy truck and Emma hammering shapes into a wooden cube.
“Daddy, could you cut up my steak please?” Melody asked, her arm to blame for her need of assistance.
“Sure darling.”
Damian smiled at how amazing Luke was as a father. Holden noticed Damian’s gaze…and Noah noticed the friction.
“Er…so how is Ethan feeling about going to middle school?” Noah started a conversation with his father-in-law.
“He’s…he’s excited. I mean it's next year but you have to think about these things before you do them.” Holden glanced at Damian, before eating another piece of steak (Luke had done an excellent job, his culinary skills improving) Luke looked at the bottle of wine in the middle of the table, Noah giving the ‘No!’ look.

“Mr. Damian?”
“Yes Melody.”
“Could you take me to see Malta one day?”
“Maybe one day.”
Holden snapped, dropping his knife and fork on the plate, “To hell she is!”
“Holden!”
“No Lily, how dare he just waltz back in expecting for us to be OK with it?”
“Dad, please!”
“Luke, can’t you see, he’s doing it again. Trying to play happy family when it’s not even his family to begin with. He‘s worming his way in so he can get you back. I‘m on to you Damian!” Insults began to fly across the dinner table.
Luke put his head in his hands, Noah sensing that is was getting too stressful for Luke and the baby. The last straw was seeing Emma crying.
“ENOUGH!” Noah shouted, standing up.
Everybody stopped; the only sound was of Emma’s yelling.
“Now listen to that, and look around the table. Luke is nearly six months pregnant with Oscar. Do any of you know how much of a hard time this is for both of us?” Noah swallowed hard so as not to cry, “Holden, I understand that Damian is the last person you want to see at every turn, but I’m sorry, you’ll have to get used to it. Damian I think its best that you leave.”
“I understand.”
“NO!”
Everyone turned their heads to Luke.
“Mom, Dad…could you leave?”
Lily agreed knowing that Luke needed time. Luke and Lily hugged. Holden stood silent.
“Holden, come on.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“DAD! DID YOU NOT LISTEN TO A WORD NOAH OR I HAVE SAID!” Luke stood up, moving to Noah’s side. “I’ve been here before Dad. Nearly six months pregnant and enjoying the final three months of my pregnancy, but this will also be the time when it’s most…” Luke turned and looked at the wall. Noah rubbed Luke’s arms, trying to prevent Luke from crying. “…I’m scared Dad,” Luke regained eye contact with Holden. “I don’t wanna lose another child…I just can’t. Can you just leave, for me and for your grandson?”
Holden reluctantly nodded, as he and Lily left the apartment.

Damian walked over to Emma and picked her up.
“What’s the matter baba, hey? Hush now.” He swayed holding his granddaughter, who was slowly calming down. She rested her head on Damian’s shoulder, her cries disappearing.
Luke put his hand in Noah’s, “Tell me everything is going to be alright.”
“…We’ll make this work. It’s going to be hard, but we can do it.” Noah kissed Luke’s temple, before deciding to clear the table.

Luke turned the page in the photo album, Damian and Noah sat either side of him.
“Oh and that’s when Melody was learning how to ride her bike, do you remember Noah?”
“Yeah, she sulked every time she got it wrong or fell over. She would slam the bike down and storm off, sitting on the top of the slide.” Damian chuckled with his son and son-in-law.
“She must have been a real handful.”
“And she still is. Just trying to get her settled for bed is a nightmare. She can talk and talk all night long.”
“Luke, don’t forget the fidgeting.”
“Oh yes the fidgeting. She sleeps in our bed when she has a nightmare and she seriously moves about in the bed, you feel like you’re at sea.”
“Melody is full of energy I can see that.”
“Yeah, but I wouldn’t change her for the world.” Luke said, blushing a little.
Noah put his hand in Luke’s, “Neither would I.”

Luke flipped the page over. Noah pointed at the photo on the right, Noah holding both the twins after they had been born. Luke was beside him, holding Emma’s tiny hand. Noah Jr was asleep while Emma was awake, her blue eyes wide open. Luke and Noah were gazing into each other’s eyes.
Damian could tell just by looking at the photograph and the site in front of him, his son being hugged by his husband, that Noah and Luke were extremely close.
“I wish I could have been there to welcome in my granddaughter and grandson.”
Luke put his hand on his father’s shoulder, “But you’ll be there for Oscar…won’t you?”
Damian pulled his son into an embrace, hearing a hint of doubt in Luke’s voice.
“I’ll be there if you want me to.”
“I want you there with Noah, Liz, Willow and my Mom.”
“Then I will.”

Melody ran out of her room, in pajamas, and stood in front of her Daddy’s and Damian.
“Mr. Damian?”
“Mel, you can call him just ’Damian’.”
“I wanna call him Mr. Damian,” She stuck her tongue out at Luke.
Luke faked surprise, “Oh Dad did you see that?”
“Terrible behavior from Miss Snyder-Mayer,” Noah played along, tutting.
Melody rolled her eyes, “Can I ask Damian my question please Daddy!” Mel said, hands on her hips. Luke put his hands up and sniggered with Noah.

Damian got himself into ’listening’ mode.
“What’s the problemo?”
“Why does Grandpa hate you so much?”
Luke started to get ready to to tell his daughter not to ask questions like that, but before he could Damian stopped Luke. He picked up Melody and sat her on his knee.
“Both your Grandpa and I love your Daddy very much because we are both Daddy’s fathers, but your Grandpa looked after Daddy more than I did, so Grandpa feels I shouldn’t see Daddy anymore.”
Melody hugged Damian, taking him a little by surprise, but he still cuddled his granddaughter.
“I like you Damian.”
Damian held her closer, “I like you too.”

<~~*L~N*~~>

“Thanks for today. I’m sorry about my Dad.”
“Don’t worry Luciano, he’ll come round.” Damian hugged his son and grabbed his coat, “Say
arrivederci to Noah, Emma, Melody and Jr for me.”
“I will.” Luke opened the door for his father.
“Ciao Luciano.”
“…Ciao…” Luke watched Damian disappear down the stairs, before closing the door. Luke slumped onto the couch, laying down and rubbing his stomach, Oscar currently doing his daily Olympic training. “I know Osc, Daddy still has things to do.” He glanced over at the washing up, the dishwasher currently not working. Luke eyelids became heavy and he closed them for a second…or a minute…

“This one Dad! This one!”
Melody ran to Dad who was sat on the bed with a book in her hands. She climbed up onto Noah’s lap rested her broken arm on Noah’s leg and her back against Dad’s stomach.
“You want this one again?” Noah asked enthusiasm in abundance.
“I like this one.” She looked up at Noah, her face upside down.
Noah cuddled her, resting his head on her shoulder as he opened the book and started to read.
The book was one of Melody’s favorites. It was one of Great-Grandma Snyder’s novels. After she had died, her will said that the book was just one of the things Melody could have. Melody couldn’t read it because a) it had TOO many big words in it and b)…there were no pictures. Luke had so far read the whole story to Melody three times, while Noah was in the lead with five. Neither got tired of watching Melody’s face light up when the ‘mist cleared’ and the main character saw the man she had dreamed about, the one that had followed her on the train. Melody wanted to be the main character’s sister; she has to fly around the world, tracking the man that her sister has fallen in love with.

“…Chapter two…” Noah kissed her cheek, knowing that she was slowly going to sleep. “Eva watched the same train go through the tunnel and disappearing into the dark. Isabel ran to her sister, her shoes beating on the stone ground…” Noah felt Mel’s arm slide off his leg, “Goodnight sweetheart.” He put the book to one side, taking a mental note of the page number. He gently picked her up, Melody’s arm suddenly gripping onto her Dad’s shoulders, complaining in her sleep.
“It’s alright baby, go to sleep now.”
“I don’t want to.” She mumbled.
“It’s Friday tomorrow. You need to sleep so you can save your energy.”
“Night, night Dad.” Melody stopped trying to stay awake and drifted off.
Noah tucked her in, gave her forehead a kiss and turned out the light, gently pulling the door closed, leaving it open a fraction so some light shone into her room.

Luke opened his eyes, hearing the slight creak of Melody’s bedroom door.
“Mel?”
Noah sat down in the armchair, “Sorry, it’s only me.”
Luke sat up with a long exhalation of air, “Is she alright?” He said, stifling a yawn.
“Yeah, she’s fine. What about you?” He got out of the armchair and parked himself next to his sleepy husband.
Luke shrugged, “Same old, feet hurt, back hurts, hungry, tired, need a hug-” Noah gently pulled Luke into a cuddle, Luke sighing, snuggling his head against Noah’s shoulder. “Noah?”
“Hmm?”
“Can we talk about the house situation?”
Noah pulled out and nodded.
“We need a bigger house; we can’t fit four children and ourselves in this three bedroom apartment.”
“How about, we start looking tomorrow?”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
Luke flung his arms around Noah. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” He kissed Noah’s cheek and resumed the hug.
