Baby Update: Luke is 7 1/2 months pregnant.

Noah couldn’t sleep. Luke had been awake half the night planning the whole day of house hunting. So far, all the properties they had seen, were either way out of their price range, not close enough to Melody’s school and Luke’s family or didn’t have all the facilities they needed for a family home. Their new home had to have five bedrooms, big family bathroom, a large back yard. A lounge, kitchen and dining room, that were fairly big and a two door garage, for Noah’s truck, which they had agreed on keeping, and the people carrier that Noah had bought, Holden keeping it at the farm for the time being.

Noah turned to Luke, whose stomach was bigger than it should be, caused by the treatment he and Oscar had had to endure. Noah ran his hand over Luke’s bump. It still fascinated him every time, seeing Luke coping like a trooper, not fazed by all the fuss he seemed to get from being pregnant. No one else in Oakdale was pregnant apart from Luke. He and Noah were contently talking to all their friends, everyone commenting on Luke’s glow and asking how supportive Noah was being as a husband. Luke was always so proud to say that Noah was his rock. Noah had gone from a giant closet case, to an out proud gay husband and father.

Luke awoke to a pair of giant, warm, tender hands caressing his chest and bump. He blinked adjusting to the morning sun’s rays. Luke smiled at Noah.
“Hey,”
“Hey, how ya feeling?”
Luke ran his fingers over the top of Noah’s hand. “Exhausted but excited.”
“Remember don’t do too much today, I don’t want you getting too tired. I can’t look after those little devils without you.”
“Oh come on, they aren’t as bad as you think. They get that devilish side from you.”
“Well, only a little bit.” Both chuckled, Noah resting his head on Luke’s tummy, just as Oscar kicked. “Did you see that?” Noah said shocked.
“He’s a little monster isn’t he?”
“Yeah. Just like his big sister Mel. He’ll be ordering us about when he’s older Daddy.” Both talked, wanting their unborn son to recognize their voices.

Luke’s smile subsided, Noah noticing the sudden change in his husband’s face. He stroked Luke’s cheek. Luke pressed his face into Noah’s touch.
“Honey?”
“I…” Noah gave a look to Luke, the one that made Luke feel relaxed, telling him what ever was the matter, Luke could tell Noah, “I don’t want things to go wrong anymore-”
Noah butted in as Luke got teary, “Hey, Hey where’s this come from?” He hugged Luke, not wanting to see Luke upset. After feeling confident Luke had quietened down, Noah sat Luke up, but Luke didn’t want to let go.
“Luke, look at me,” Luke glanced at Noah then away, a tear traveling down from his eye, “No Luke, my eyes aren’t over near the balcony, they’re here,” He turned Luke’s head round so he was facing Noah.
“I don’t want anything to happen to Oscar.” Luke said, bursting into tears, putting a hand over his mouth to muffle the sobs.

Noah rubbed one hand up and down Luke’s back and placed the other were little Ossie was currently sticking out his foot. Luke put both his hands over Noah’s.
Noah spoke gently, “What happened to Abigail was not your fault. You did not do anything wrong. You carried her and protected her-”
“But-”
“No buts Luke, listen to me. You did everything you could have done to look after while you were carrying her. It was only because of one person that things went down hill.” Noah moved his hands further up, either side of Luke’s face, both knowing that a kiss was eminent, “No one is going to hurt you. I’m here. I always will be. I’m here for you, and for the twins and Melody, and now little Oscar.”
Luke twiddled strands of Noah’s hair, “I just keep thinking, what could have happened a few months ago, when I was in the hospital after collapsing…I could have lost Oscar…and Damian, I would never have got the chance to see my real father, not the one that couldn’t accept me.”
“Luke, don’t think about that. In 1 ½ months Oscar is going to be born and he’s going to be so perfect!” Noah said with enthusiasm, “He’s going to be as perfect as you. Our fifth child. Our second little boy.”
“I love you bubby.” Luke said, tears still present in his eyes.
Noah made a ’tut’ sound,
“You know I love you too.”

Luke leaned in, Noah locking onto Luke’s lips as soon as they touched. Everything Noah had said had reassured Luke, something he needed at that moment. His Dad was still trying to persuade Luke not to get too ’chummy’ with Damian and also, Kerri was soon to be sentenced to how ever many years in jail. Luke had no words to describe how amazing Noah was as his lover, husband, best friend and father to their children. Noah was everything to him, and he knew that their love would stand the test of time.
Noah ran his hand up Luke’s back to his neck, as they continued their slow make out.
“Hmm…Luke?”
“Mhm?”
“We need to…get up now…wake the kids…Luke?” Luke gave Noah a final kiss, and then attempted to get himself out of bed, failing miserably.
“Little help please Noah.”
Noah got Luke into a sitting position then gradually lifted him, so he was finally standing. Luke gave Noah a quick peck. “Thanks.”
“Anything for you.”

<~~*L~N*~~>

“Now this one only has four bedrooms, but has an attic that can be easily converted into a fifth-”
“Well, that’s going to be difficult. I mean once the baby is born, we won’t have much time to redecorate the house. We basically want a house that doesn’t need much work doing to it, maybe repainting walls and tiling floors but that won’t be too much to do.” Noah explained, sitting next to Luke, in front of a desk with the Estate Agent. Melody was wandering about, even though she had been told a million times by Noah, to come and sit on his lap. The twins were in their stroller, Jr sleeping, and Emma playing with her horse from Grandpa Snyder. Luke was cradling his stomach, his thumbs rubbing where Oscar kept kicking. Noah had a hand on Luke’s thigh, as he continued to explain what house the couple needed. Switching Estate Agents was not a good idea.

“Are you sure you don’t want this property? It is at a great price.” The man tried to sell it to the couple one last time.
“No,” Noah said firmly, Luke agreeing with his husband.
“OK, well there is one last one, but there is already a couple bidding for it. If you were to make an offer it would have to be well over $645,500.”
Luke felt Noah’s hand tighten on his leg.
“How much?” Noah heard it, but he just wanted to make sure he wasn’t having a nightmare.
“You would need to bid about $650,000.”
“Show us the house.” Luke demanded.
The man swiveled his computer screen round showing a picture of a large, stone white house, lavish windows and doors, and a huge garage.
“It has five bedrooms, two offices, a large family bathroom; master bedroom has an on suite. The kitchen, dining room and lounge are opened planned and the back yard goes out onto fields.”
“That’s near Snyder Farm isn’t it?”
“Yeah, the family farm has allowed the buyer of the house to be able to use the first two fields if they need to.”
“I’m Luke Snyder…well was, before I got married; now I’m Snyder-Mayer, but…I own that farm with my Dad. Noah, it would be perfect. We’re basically on my parent’s doorstep, which has its perks, and the farm is 10 mins away from Melody’s school.”
“That’s amazing. Can we go see the house?”

The Estate Agent just sat stunned, “Er…OK…tomorrow? 11 o’clock?”
“Make it one. 30 week scan.”
“Er…yeah.”
“Awesome!” Noah hugged Luke. Things sounded good.

<~~*L~N*~~>

Next day

“It’s right near the farm Mom; it’s like a three minute walk out of our own backyard.” Luke stood pacing, talking to his mother on the phone, “Well Noah and I love it just by looking at the picture and where it’s situated…That is the problem though…Where are we going to get $650,000...No, Mom, we couldn’t. No!…Mom I don’t want your money, you have better things to spend on then helping me and Noah…Mom! Don’t you dare think about it.”
Noah came out of the bathroom after his shave.
“Who you talking to honey?”
“One min Mom,” Luke covered the phone, turning to Noah, “My Mom,” then went back to the heated debate, sorry, the conversation about whether on not Luke was going to accept money from his parents to buy the house.

Noah found the TV Guide. Nothing much on…OH MY GOD…Documentary about the making of the original King Kong! Noah grabbed the remote and flicked through the channels.
“OK, bye Mom, love you too, bye…I will, bye.” Luke sighed and put the phone back, “Noah?”
“Huh?” Noah was watching his documentary.
“Could you turn that off please?”
“But I’ve only just put it on, can’t it wait till later?”
“No! Now turn it off or record the rest of it.”
Noah obeyed and hit the record button, turning off the TV and sitting, waiting attentively for Luke to begin to talk.
“Mom wants to give us the money for the house.”
“WHAT!”
“I know. I said we would think about it, but you know my Mom, once she has her mind set she won’t back down.” Luke slouched down into the couch.
“Well, we’re going to look at it today, so we can make up our minds this afternoon.”
Luke heaved a sigh, “I just want to find somewhere to live, so we don’t have to all cram into this tiny apartment.”

Noah put his arm round Luke and held his spouse’s hand.
“Don’t worry, we’ll find somewhere. I promise. Let’s see what it looks like and then we’ll see if we can salvage the money to buy it.”
“Do you think we should bring the kids with us?”
“Maybe another day. We don’t know if we’re bidding for it yet. We’ll bring the kids to your 30-week scan at the clinic with Liz, then we’ll take them to Uncle Case and Auntie Ally’s apartment and then go to view the house. How does that sound?”
Luke grinned, “Sounds good.”
“Now, we have 20 minutes, can I watch the rest of my documentary?”
Luke chuckled, and snuggled up against Noah’s side, “Sorry, go on then.”

<~~*L~N*~~>

“He’s getting big isn’t he?” Liz said, applying pressure around Luke’s navel and stomach.
Luke nodded, “Remember what you promised?” He said with a childlike grin.
“Yes, yes I know. I got the equipment especially for you. You wanted a 4D Ultra sound and you shall get one Mr. Snyder-Mayer.”
Luke was acting as if he just was promised a lollipop, looking at Noah, finding his husband’s hand and gripping it tight.
Liz picked up her trusty transducer, squeezing the necessary amount of gel onto Luke’s bump.
Melody and the twins moved over to Dad, so the four of them could watch the screen. Liz glided the instrument over Luke’s stomach, a gold image appearing on the screen. Luke and Noah never really had asked or thought about 4D scans before but after Luke read about it in a book, reading how you could bond more with your baby by having the 4D Ultrasound; Luke coxed Noah into asking Liz to perform one.

“There’s little Oscar…well not little, but he does look absolutely adorable.”
Noah felt a tug at his arm, his son getting excited, pointing up at the screen.
“Yes Noah, that’s…that’s your baby brother.” Noah, the elder, felt eyes fill up, watching his baby son’s every movement on the screen.
Liz sat on the edge of the bed, still scanning across Luke’s stomach, but talking him through what he could see.
“Now, this type of scan is as modern as it gets at the mo. 5D is in the scientific process still, but I think what you’re seeing now, is truly remarkable.”
Luke slowly nodded, his eyes fastened to the motion on the screen, “It’s totally awesome.”
“Aww, look he’s sticking his tongue out. I think he knows he’s on camera.” Liz joked, making Luke chuckle.

Luke could not stop looking at Oscar. He was small but chunky or ‘cuddly’ as Luke put it. Oscar was fidgeting about, a weird sensation to Luke, watching Oscar kicking out a foot, and feeling it at the same time. Oscar scrunched up his nose, gave a big yawn, and even opened his eyes, whilst Luke, Noah and their children watched in awe at the screen. Liz explained that Oscar probably couldn’t see very well inside Luke, but Oscar was learning about himself, touching his face, blinking, testing his senses of taste, touch, sight, sound and smell. I’m guessing Oscar couldn’t smell a great deal in there either, but smell was the one thing that always would set off Luke’s cravings. Just smelling macaroni cheese, would make Oscar do back flips. Eventually fifteen minutes had gone by, and Liz had to stop. You have to be cautious when using any Ultrasound equipment, not wanting to expose father and baby to too much ultrasound waves!

<~~*L~N*~~>

Luke sat in silence as they drove to their destination, after dropping the kids at Uncle Case and Auntie Ally’s apartment. Luke bestowed a huge grin on his face, his hands contently surrounding his magnificent baby bump. Noah could hear little giggles coming from his husband, Luke’s grin becoming infectious to Noah.
“Are you happy Luke?”
Luke looked up with a state of disbelief, “Well, of course I am.”
“That’s great but I mean, are you happy with how our life together has panned out?”
Luke gave out a puff of air, “It’s not exactly how I thought my life with you would have been like, but nevertheless,” Luke put his hand in Noah’s, “I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
They were at a set of traffic lights, giving time for Noah to lean over and kiss his husband passionately.
“I love you Luke.”
“Me too bubby.” Luke looked over Noah’s shoulder, “Lights have gone green.”

<~~*L~N*~~>

“Now this is the last bedroom. Basic rectangular space.”
“Oooo Luke, this would be perfect for the nursery, don’t you think?”
Luke gave a nervous laugh, smiling at the estate agent woman, who was covering for the other guy.
“Noah, honey, we haven’t even bought the house yet.”
“Yeah, but we can plan ahead.”
“I suppose.” Noah sensed Luke was getting tired from all the walking they had done so far. He put an arm round Luke’s waist, Noah’s spouse a bit surprised as to why but not complaining.
“Now, since this room is at the back of this property, the view from this large window is of the fields of Snyder Farm. Mr. Snyder, Michael tells me that you and your father own the farm.”
“Yes, we do, and it’s Mr. Snyder-Mayer.”

Noah could hear the antagonism in Luke’s voice.
“Erm…Katherine isn’t it?”
The lady nodded, not noticing the anger present in Luke’s face.
“Er, could you leave us for a minute to discuss the house.”
“Of course. I’ll be back in twenty minutes.” Katherine left the room, and disappeared down the stairs.
As soon as she was gone, Luke began.
“Jeez, I don’t think I can take that woman anymore. She knows our surname. Snyder-‘Mayer’!”
“Luke, calm down. So she forgot to add my surname at the end, it’s no big deal.”
“But I’m married to you. Mayer is now part of my name. She should have the decency to at least get my name right.”
“OK, you’re just cranky from Oscar kicking all night.”
“No, it’s that woman-”
“Who has a name!”
“Oh sorry Noah, ‘Katherine’.”
“So, what about this house?” Noah tried to change the subject, but Luke continued to mumble.

“I bet she was crap at school, illiterate. Stuck up bit-”
“Luke!!”
Luke stopped, turned to Noah.
“Just stop and let’s concentrate on whether or not we are going to by this house for our family. I hate to break it to you but in 1 ½ months, Oscar is going to born, and if we don’t have a house by then, we are going to be in deep…Cover your ears Oscar,” Noah moved in closer and whispered, “We’ll be in deep shit.”
Luke bowed his head a little.
“I’m sorry.”
Noah hugged Luke, “Don’t be. I understand, you’re tired.”
“I want to buy this place Noah, but I don’t think we can afford it.” Luke said, his voice cracking, hormones kicking in.
“Well…maybe we should accept your Mom’s offer to help us out.”
“No, Noah, I don’t want to take money from Mom.”
“Luke, baby, that’s the only way we can put in a bid for this house.”

Noah felt Luke nod against his shoulder.
“Let’s go tell Katherine, and please don’t snap at her babe.”
Luke smiled, “I won’t.”
“Promise?” Noah had a playful look on his face.
Luke chuckled, “I promise.”
“Good.” Noah gave Luke a quick peck, before taking his hand and making their way down the stairs.

<~~*L~N*~~>

Following week

Luke and Noah had picked up Melody from school and taken her to Memorial to get her cast taken off, and a new one put on. Melody sat on the bed, swinging her legs, excited about seeing if her arm had got better than the last time, she had seen it. Luke sat down, his ankles throbbing from trekking around all day with Noah and the twins, baby shopping, while Noah stood up, with Melody’s Dora the Explorer bag over his shoulder. The family waited for Dr. Hughes and Nurse Stewart.

“Do you think Dr. Hughes will let me choose the color for the new cast again, Dad?”
“I don’t know sweetie. He might do, but I’m not sure what type of cast it will be darling.” Noah answered his daughter.
“Can I have my juice please Daddy.”
Luke motioned to Noah, to pass him Melody’s lunchbox. He passed Mel her carton of juice.
“Thank you Daddy.” Melody noticed her father’s lack of smiling. “Are you Okay Daddy?”
Luke looked at Mel and gave a brief grin, “I’m fine darling.”
“Are you sure?-”
“Yes.” Luke snapped. Noah had been asking him that question all day while they were in the baby store.
“I was just asking.” Mel crossed her arms and pouted.
Luke felt bad, reaching out for Melody’s hand, his daughter pulling away.

“Melody, Daddy didn’t mean to snap at you.” Noah tried to console both his husband and daughter. “Daddy is just in a bit of discomfort at the minute, what with the baby.”
“I’m sorry pumpkin.” Luke was on the verge of crying.
“That’s OK.” Mel smiled.
Luke stood up and hugged his daughter, just as Dr Hughes walked in.

“How is my favorite patient this morning?”
“I’m great!”
“Oh, but Dr. Hughes, I thought I was your favorite patient.” Luke stuck out his bottom lip, Noah, Mel and Bob smiling.
“Luke, you and your daughter are, as well as the rest of your family.”
Luke chuckled and sat back down.

“Nurse Stewart will assist me with putting the new cast on, so won’t be here for this first part.” Bob explained to Luke and Noah, before turning to the Snyder-Mayer daughter. “Right now Miss Snyder-Mayer, what I need you to do is give me your arm, and be incredibly still OK?”
“OK.” Melody continued to smile, up until she saw the ‘thing’ that would apparently be cutting her cast. Her face dropped, Luke, Noah and Bob noticing her fear.
“It’s alright baby,” Luke cuddled her, Melody clasping onto her father’s shoulders. “Just stay still for Dr. Hughes-”
“No! I don’t like it Daddy.” Melody wanted Luke to pick her up and hug her, but in Luke’s condition, that wasn’t an option.
“Darling, if you want to have a new cast put on, then you have to be a good girl, and do as the Dr. says.”
“No.” Melody buried her head in Luke’s chest. Luke wrapped his arms around Mel, cuddling her, and turned his head to Noah.

Noah put Mel’s bag on the chair, and jumped up onto the hospital bed. He sat next to Melody, picking her up and placing her on his lap.
“Come on sweetheart.” Noah held Melody’s arm out for Bob, trying not to grip too tight.
“DAD, I DON’T WANT TO!” She screamed. Mel wriggled about, kicking her legs and crying.
“Luke! Stand out the way, so she doesn’t kick you.”
“Melody, let Dad hold your arm, so Bob can take it off.” Luke pleaded with Mel.
Bob knew exactly what to do.
“Luke, I don’t think I can do it with her squirming about like this.”
“So what do we do?”
Bob tapped his nose and put the cast saw to one side. He popped his head out the door.

Two minutes later, Alison appeared with a box. Melody had stopped crying, Noah hugging her still sat on the hospital bed. Luke watched Bob take the box to the bed, and open it.
“Melody in this box is some of my special lollipops.”
“What do they do?” Mel hiccupped, wiping her eyes.
“They help broken arms get better, but I can’t give you one until I have taken this cast off. Only after I’ve taken this one off, can I prescribe one of my lollipops.”
Mel looked at Daddy, searching for confirmation of what Dr. Hughes had said.
“It’s true Mel. Let Dr. Hughes take the cast off, and then you’ll get a lollipop.”
Melody nodded, cuddling up to her Dad and sticking her left arm out towards Bob.
Luke ran his fingers through Mel’s hair, “Good girl.”

Noah held Mel on his lap as Bob slowly removed the cast with the saw. Melody screamed every time she felt the vibrations go through her arm, burying her face in Noah’s chest. After the longest ten minutes in history, in Mel’s mind, the cast was off. Luke kissed his daughter, Noah hugging her tight.
Bob offered Melody her reward, which she took, passing to Daddy to open for her.
“Luke?”
Luke glanced at Melody, who looked content, eating her lollipop and hugging her Dad with one hand, the other in a temporary sling. He turned his head back to Bob. “How‘s her arm?”
“The swelling has gone down. I need to do an X-Ray to see what cast, if any, we need.”
“OK, thanks Doc.”
“Oh just doing my job Luke. I’ll be back to take Mel down for her X-Ray.”

“Melody sweetie?”
“Yes Daddy.” Mel had her adorable smile back, which became contagious, Noah and Luke smiling with her.
“The Doctor needs to do an X-Ray of your arm, and then Ally and the Doctor will put your arm in a new cast.”
“Are you going to come with me?”
Luke held his daughter’s hand.
“Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I?”
“Because…Forget it.”
“Honey, tell Daddy what you told me just a minute ago.” Noah encouraged Mel.
“I had the same dream again last night.”
“What dream?” Luke looked at Noah.
“The one were I leave, and you and Oscar…pass away.”

Luke cradled Melody.
“Darling, when you have a nightmare, what have I told you?”
“To wake you or Dad up.”
“That’s right. If it scares you or makes you upset, find me or Dad and tell us.”
Noah stood up, joining in with the big family hug for Mel.
“I’m not going anywhere Mel. I promise you.”
“Thanks Daddy, but my arm is hurting.”
“Oh sorry.”
“Only kidding.” Melody gave a cheeky grin.
