Title: Don't Speak

Luke was sitting in a bar close to his college campus, drinking a glass of soda. Sighing, he ran his index finger around the rim of the glass. He just didn't know what to do about Noah, anymore. He loved him. God, did he love him! But he was tired of the whole charade with Ameera. When Noah had first mentioned the idea of marrying Ameera, to keep her in the country, to him, Luke had been very uncomfortable. And, if he was honest with himself, a little angry. But he had supported Noah because he had known that the marriage was in name only. Noah loved him.

But as time wore on, Luke was growing increasingly frustrated with the whole situation. The sneaking around, always on the lookout for the INS, was starting to wear on his nerves. But he didn't know what to do. He loved Noah, but something had to give. It was boring going places by himself. 'Face it, Luke, you're just plain bored,' he thought to himself. He had just taken a sip of his soda when a hand touched his shoulder. Luke quickly swallowed and turned his head to look at the young man next to him. Luke had to admit, the man was attractive with his slightly spiky blonde hair and his nicely defined arms. Luke could tell just by looking at the man, that he had a nice body.

"Hi, my name's Brent Miller."

Luke gave a smile and introduced himself as he shook Brent's hand. "Luke Snyder."

"You looked like you could use some company. So... here I am!"

Luke chuckled as Brent struck a pose on his bar stool. "Well, you're just in time. I was dying from boredom."

For the next hour, Brent and Luke talked about anything and everything. Their favorite music. Their favorite books. Even their favorite color. Luke was having a blast. On one level, he was happy that he met Brent. On the other, he felt as if he were betraying Noah even though nothing had happened. Luke looked at his watching, seeing that it was eleven at night.

"Wow! The time sure has flown. I'd better get going."

"Wait," Brent said before Luke could stand up. "How about going to a movie with me tomorrow."

Luke shook his head. "No, I can't. Thanks for asking, though."

"Well, why can't you?"

Luke stood up, putting on his coat. "I have a boyfriend. A man I love very much."

Brent was surprised. The whole time they had been talking, Luke had never mentioned having a boyfriend. So, Brent had automatically assumed he was single. Before, Brent could say anything else, Luke was gone.

Brent was getting ready to sit back down, when he noticed a cell phone. He instantly recognized it as Luke's from when the young man had used it earlier. Getting an idea, he flipped the phone open. Quickly scrolling to numbers, he saw the number for that cell phone. Grabbing a napkin, and a pen from the bar, he wrote the number down. He had just flipped the phone closed when Luke walked up to him.

"There it is! I was worried I had lost it," Luke said slightly out of breath.

"Here," Brent said handing the phone to Luke. "I was getting ready to try and find you."

Luke smiled. "Thanks. Bye." And Luke was, once again, gone.

Brent sighed as he looked at the number on the napkin. He was going to have to get back in touch with Luke. And he needed to find out who the mystery boyfriend was. Did Luke actually have one, or was he making it up? And what kind of boyfriend would let their man go to a bar, on a Friday night, by themselves? Deciding that he would put the 'Woo Luke Operation' into plan the next morning, he left the bar with a smile on his handsome face.

OUTSIDE THE BAR

Luke leaned against the outside of the club, rubbing his face with his hands. He had needed to get out of that bar, away from Brent, quickly. He had had fun talking to him and he was feeling guilty. Even though nothing had happened, and he loved Noah very much, he had found himself wanting to accept Brent's movie invitation. He just wanted to be first, again. With Noah, he felt like second place and he didn't like it. Not one bit. "Noah and I are going to have to have a talk," Luke mumbled to himself as he started his walk toward the truck that his father had let him borrow.

Luke really wanted to sleep more this Saturday morning. But unfortunately for him, he forgot to turn off the clock! In a blink of an eye, his peaceful face turned into a living nightmare when the familiar sound slash sound for waking up rung deeply into his eardrums! “Noooooooooooooooo,” he told to himself. Luke violently moved his arm over the clock, trying to push the little nice button that turns off this hitleric sound, but instead of that, he just pushed it away! The clock, with the same awful sound, felt behind the bed table, making almost impossible for Luke to reach it while lying in the bed! “Damn it”. It’s not like he has a choice now. He gets up and angrily grabs the clock, doing what it’s expecting to be done.

“Finally you shut up!” he said returning to bed. “What, it’s 9:00 am? Oh my God,“ he says putting the clock back in its rightful place. Why so tense, everybody wonders. Well it’s been a while since Luke has had sex, and you know, for a young man at his age, these morning hours are commonly known for not under 18 material. “Noah, Noah,“ he whispered. It’s not that hard to read Luke’s mind right now. Luke lies back in the bed, trying to hold himself from something every other young man would do. He loves Noah so much, he can’t do this to him, despite the fact that Noah has been putting him in second place the last few months. Luke is about to close his eyes and travel to the dreamland again, but another familiar sound breaks the silence one more time! “What the hell?! he exclaims, staring at his ringing cell phone. “Noah!“ he wishes without checking the incoming contact! “Good morning,“ he breathes out answering the call.

“Good morning to you too,” answers a non-Noah voice, that’s for sure.

“Who’s there?“ Luke asked.

“You probably won’t like it if I burst it out violently, so I will just try to be diplomatic,“ the voice replied.
“Excuse me?“ Luke asked.

“Isn’t it nice when a cute guy who likes you wakes you up in the morning?“ the voice asked.

“Come again?” Luke asked for the second time. “OK, who is it?“ Luke demanded with a very serious tone.

“It’s Brent. You know, from last night.”

“Brent, wait, how… how did you get my number?”

“This is the part you are not going to like,“ Brent confessed. “Before you came back and searched for it, I cheated and grabbed your number off your cell phone,“ said Brent in a very guilty sounding voice.

That didn’t come well for Luke. “WHAT? YOU DID WHAT?” Luke yelled.

“I’m sorry. I know I have no excuses, but-”

Luke interrupted him, “But what?“

Brent decided to answer with the truth. “But I like you, I like you A LOT.“

“OK, thank you. I’m flattered, but still, what you did was not right.”

“So, asking you out for a movie tonight won’t be right, either?“ Brent asked nervously.

I’m in a relationship, you know.” Luke said, trying to be as convincing as he could, because, he may be with Noah theoretically, but still that didn’t change the fact that he was so much attracted by that hottie Brent. And unfortunately for him, the tone of his voice betrayed him!

“Then why do I get the stinky feeling that you desperately need to get out of the house and do other things?” Brent’s last line was a shocking reply for Luke.

And yeah, he was right. He needed to get out, to have fun. “So, what about the movie invitation we discussed last night?” Brent insisted.

“Brent, I’m very flattered, but--“ He didn’t have time to finish his line.

“But, I know, you are with a guy. It’s ok, we can just go out as friends.“

That last line was what Luke desperately wanted to hear! “Ok, but just friends, ok? I don’t want to feel that I’m threatened, got it?” Luke warned.
“Got it, boy,“ Brent replied, smiling since it’s the first step for his ultimate goal! Brent sure has other plans, he seems like a very experienced guy and knows how to handle these situations. “So, how about meeting at 9:00 pm, you know, at the same bar? Then we can go on from there.

Luke hesitates, but eventually answers. “Yeah, ok, that would be a good idea. So, see you around. Bye,” he says as he quickly hangs up the phone. He likes this guy a lot, but Luke is a very romantic boy and has a great heart. He loves Noah, so it’s not like he didn’t already feel guilty for accepting the invitation.

At nine, on the dot, Luke arrived at the bar. He saw Brent waiting for him outside. As he walked toward Brent, Luke was feeling a little nervous. Wiping his hands on his pants, he managed a smile when he reached the other man. Brent smiled at him.

“Hey, Luke. Glad to see that you didn’t change your mind.”

“Well, we are friends. Just hanging out,” Luke replied.

Brent nodded. “Yeah. Well, let’s go on inside. We’ll have a drink, then go and catch a movie.”

Luke took a deep breath and followed Brent into the bar. The bar wasn’t too crowded and they were able to find an empty table to sit down at. After giving the waitresses their orders for Pepsi and cheeseburgers, they started talking.

“You didn’t want a beer?” asked Brent.

Luke shook his head. “No. A few years ago I had a bit of a… drinking problem. I don’t want to get into it. But you could have gotten a beer, if you wanted one.”

“Nah. Not much of a beer person,” Brent replied with a smile. Luke couldn’t help but smile back.

Noah was standing at the entrance to the bar. He had went to the Snyder Farm, looking for Luke. But Holden had told him that Luke had went out. He didn’t know where. Noah had a pretty good idea, though. He knew that there was a club, well a bar really, that Luke sometimes liked to go to for dancing and just having fun. But he wasn’t prepared for what he saw when he walked in. There was his lover, at a table, with another guy and they were smiling at each other. When the other guy reached over and placed his hand on top of Luke’s, Noah had seen enough. He turned and walked out of the bar, without Luke even knowing that he had been there.

Luke quickly pulled his hand out from under Brent's. He felt uncomfortable. Sure, he was attracted to Brent but he was in love with Noah. He felt like he was betraying Noah by being in the bar with Brent.

"Something the matter?" Brent asked.

"I...uh... I have to go!" Luke blurted out.

Before Brent could utter a single word, Luke was out of his chair and gone.

Noah walked into the house that and Ameera were sharing. He flopped down onto the couch, his head in his hands. Ameera was concerned. He had left to go and visit Luke. What had happened?

She sat down beside him and put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "What is the matter, Noah?"

Noah raised his head, with a sigh, and looked at her. "It's over."

"What's over? What are you talking about?"

"Luke and me. It's over."

Ameera gasped. She knew how much in love the two men were. "What? But you and Luke love each other!"

Noah nodded. "I love him. But he's moved on. He doesn't love me, anymore."

"Of course he does, Noah!"

Noah shook his head. "No. No, he doesn't. I went to the farm to spend some time with him, but Holden said that he wasn't there. So, I tried that bar that he likes to visit, sometimes, and I saw him there. He was with another guy, Ameera! I should have seen this coming."

Ammera shook her head, giving Noah a hug. When she pulled back, she began to speak. "Noah, Luke loves you. Only you. I see it every time you two are together. Did you ask him why he was with that other man? Did Luke tell you that it was over?"

"Well... no. I saw the other man grab Luke's hand and I left."

"He did not even know you were there?"

"No."

Ameera slapped Noah on the back of the head. At Noah's surprised look, she said, "You need to talk to him." After a pause, she added, "I am sorry that I'm causing problems between you two."

"You're not," Noah immediately protested.

Just then there was a knock on the door. Ameera opened the door and saw that it was Luke standing there. "Well, hello, Luke." She said with a smile.

Luke managed a small smile back at her. "Hi, Ameera. I need to see Noah."

"Of course. C'mon in." After she had stepped to the side, Luke walked into the house. "I will leave you two alone," Ameera said with an encouraging smile at Noah.

Neither Luke nor Noah spoke for a couple of minutes. Finally, Noah asked, "Why are you here? I thought you'd still be with your new boyfriend."

Luke was shocked. "What?! Did we break up and I not know about it."

"Well... no... but--"

"Then, why do think that I have another boyfriend?"

"I saw you two, together, tonight."

Luke bit his bottom lip and sat down on the couch beside Noah. "I did come over here to tell you about that. I was bored and lonely, Noah. We can't be ourselves since you've married Ameera. We always have to hide our relationship. I met him last night at that same bar and he asked me out. I told him no. I told him that I have a boyfriend that I love. Well, he got my number and called me. He asked me out, again. Finally, I decided to go out. But as friends only. I swear, Noah. It was NOT a date!"

"I saw you two holding hands," Noah accused.

"No, you didn't. He put his hand over mine, but I took my hand away. I felt so guilty just being there with him. I left and came straight here. I wanted to tell you. No secrets."

"No secrets," Noah repeated. After a short pause, he asked, "Did you want to be on a date with him?"

"I'm not going to lie to you, Noah. He is attractive. But I love you. Only you. I love you with my whole being. I wouldn't do anything to intentionally jeopardize that. It's just that I... miss being with you the way we were before Ameera."

Noah nodded. "Me, too." He grabbed Luke in a tight hug, their foreheads touching. Within a minute, they were involved in a passionate and loving kiss. When they pulled back, Noah spoke. "I'm going to tell Ameera that I want an annulment."

"Are you sure?"

Noah nodded. "I've been thinking about it for a while."

"How will Ameera take it, do you think?" asked Luke.

"I will take it just fine," said a voice. Looking towards the bedroom door, they saw Ameera standing there with a gentle smile. "I can see the love that you two have and I cannot be the cause of anymore problems."

"I'm sorry, Ameera," Noah said.

"Don't be. I am grateful for everything that you and Luke have done for me. But you two should be able to show your love."

Luke and Noah smiled as they stood up. "Thank you, Ameera," Luke said as he hugged her. Noah followed suit.

Ameera returned their hugs and went into the kitchen. Noah and Luke looked at each other. "I love you, Luke Snyder."

Luke smiled his beautiful smile. "I love you, too, Noah Mayer."

At the bar, across town, Brent Miller was sitting next to a good-looking Greek man. "Hi, I'm Brent Miller," he said with a smile.
