By this time Luke has become a quite successful writer of crime thrillers. He has fans all over Illinois and is on the brink to become a well-known novelist all over the United States of America. His publisher has big hopes for him and encourages him all the way. At the moment Luke is working on his next big novel called “Deadly solitude”. This book is supposed to be THE book; the book to make a name for himself; to establish himself on the market. He is twenty-seven years old by now and he thinks that it is now or never. Writing has always been a big passion of his and now he has the chance to make a living out of it.

But writing is not the only important thing in his life. His rock, his anchor is Noah. He couldn’t live without him. Every time Luke feels like the world is against him Noah is there for him. They have been dating for over eight years now. Of course they had and still have problems here and there, but their love has grown even stronger and stronger because of it. With each problem they were able to solve they got closer, needed and wanted each other more than ever before.

Noah works at WOAK since he finished college five years ago. He works in the editing room with Mike. A nice and quite handsome fella who loves to make jokes and sarcastic comments. They get along very well and sometimes they even play a game of basketball or pool. Mike is gay, too. But he hasn’t found the right one yet. He envies Noah for his relationship with Luke, because that’s exactly what he wants, too. He wants to find someone who loves him as much as Noah loves Luke.

Another stressful day at the studio is finally over and Noah is looking forward to get home and spend some quality time with his boyfriend. They don’t have much time for each other lately, mostly because of Luke’s work for his new book. Luke is writing constantly, sometimes through day and night. And that’s where Noah finds him when he enters their apartment; writing at his desk looking tired.

“Hey, honey” says Noah and gives Luke a peck on the lips.

“Hi! How was work?” Luke asks more out of politeness than actual interest. He is way too focused on his story to pay attention to anything else.

“It was stressful, but Mike and I got finished on time. You’ve been writing the whole day?” asks Noah with concern, because he can see how exhausted his boyfriend is.

“What? – Oh, yeah. Pretty much” says Luke while typing his last thought.

Noah walks behind Luke and starts to massage his shoulder blades. Luke leans back and enjoys Noah’s touch. His back has been hurting the whole day and now his body starts to relax under the loving pressure of Noah’s hands.

“Is that okay, not too much pressure?” asks Noah bending down to Luke’s ear.

Luke has his eyes closed and lets out a soft appreciative moan.

“It’s perfect. Keep going” answers Luke breathing slowly.

Noah feels how Luke’s shoulders relax and starts to massage Luke’s lower back. His thumbs apply pressure on Luke’s spine and Luke sinks deeper and deeper into a relaxing state.

“What about I run a bath for you and make some dinner? Try to relax. The book can wait until tomorrow” suggests Noah now massaging Luke’s neck and the back of his head.

“I have this idea in my head that I have to write down” answers Luke with his eyes still closed.

“Come on, Luke. Let me pamper you for tonight” Noah says almost whispering into Luke’s ear.

Noah notices that Luke is still struggling with the idea of stopping writing for the day and says

“Just make a note of your idea. You can complete it tomorrow, okay? – Please?”

Luke slowly opens his eyes and reaches for his laptop closing it carefully.

“Okay. Sounds good actually. I could use a break” answers Luke grabbing Noah’s hand and kissing it gently.

Noah turns Luke’s desk chair around and holds Luke’s face in his hand.

“I let the water in then” says Noah and kisses Luke tenderly caressing Luke’s cheeks before going into the bathroom.

Twenty minutes later the bath tub is full of nice, warm and rose-scented water. Noah lights a few candles in the bathroom. He wants everything to be perfect for his lover.

“Luke? The bath is ready for you. What do you want for dinner? I could make us – “ Noah says but gets interrupted by Luke’s finger on his lips.

“Come bathe with me” says Luke grabbing Noah’s hand and dragging him into the bathroom.

They take each other’s clothes off and place themselves into the bath tub. Noah gets in first followed by Luke. Luke sits between Noah’s legs his back touching Noah’s chest. He leans back into his boyfriend’s chest while Noah is resting his head on Luke’s. Noah’s hands reach for Luke’s intertwining their fingers.

Noah lets out a sigh and says “God, I have missed this, Luke. It feels like forever since the last time we just spent some time together alone”

“Yeah, me too” says Luke snuggling up to Noah’ chest.

Both of them just sit in that bath tub enjoying each other’s company. They have their eyes closed concentrating on the other one’s breath and heart beat.

“I love you so much, Luke” says Noah caressing Luke’s blond hair now.

“I love you, too” answers Luke smiling. He releases his fingers from Noah’s and starts petting Noah’s palm tenderly. They both savor these moments, because they rarely got to share moments like this in the last few months.

A couple of minutes later the phone rings. Both have no intentions on answering the phone. After a few more seconds the answering machine does its job.

“This is Luke and Noah. We are too busy or too unwilling to answer your call (laughter). Please leave a message after the beep. Maybe we’ll call back. – Peep”

“Hey Luke. This is Joseph. I hope you are writing your ass off, because the boss just changed the deadline. He wants to release your book two months earlier than planned. Just wanted to let you know, the deadline is in exactly seven weeks now. That’s it. Take care”

Luke opens his eyes wide and Noah could feel how his boyfriend’s body was tensing up again.

“Oh shit. He can’t do that. He promised me I had at least ten weeks left” says Luke getting out of the bath tub. Noah reaches for Luke’s shoulder to stop him from getting up, but Luke is already out of the tub drying himself off.

“Come back in, Luke. It’s already late. Please?” Noah begs, but Luke is already getting dressed.

“I’m sorry, babe. I have to” apologizes Luke and leaves Noah sitting alone in the tub with a dozen of lighted candles around him.

A sad Noah plunges into the water staying under there for at least a minute. As he comes up you can see one single tear rolling down his left cheek. How he hates moments like this. Finally he and Luke had a chance to make up for the lack of time in the last month, but they got interrupted once again.

Noah whips the tear away, runs his fingers through his hair and climbs out of the tub. He lets the water run out of the bath tub. Dries himself off with the same towel Luke used. Puts on his clothes and blows the candles out eventually.

He leaves the bathroom and sees Luke sitting in front of his laptop again writing and drinking coffee. He misses Luke so much it hurts. Of course he is happy for Luke, that he finally gets a chance to do what he has always wanted. But he misses Luke’s attention, his touches and most of all his love. He misses the feeling of being loved. Noah has no doubt about the fact that Luke loves him, but Luke doesn’t show it or doesn’t have the chance to. That moment in the bath tub, that’s what he needs, what he craves for. Feeling like he is the most important thing in Luke’s life.

But Luke’s head is too wrapped up in his book to see that his boyfriend is suffering. He is not aware of the moments when Noah practically begs for his attention.

Noah walks over to Luke saying good-night before he enters the bedroom – alone – once again. He lies in bed waiting – hoping that Luke would join him. That they would express what they mean to each other. It is not just about sex, but he yearns for being close to Luke, for feeling him inside him.

“At least he is going to be there when I wake up” Noah hopes.

After thirty minutes Noah falls asleep – alone – without Luke in his arms – without Luke’s arms wrapped around him.

Chapter 6- The Search

Colonel Winston Mayer always took his coffee the same way, no matter which army barrack or corner café he happened to be sitting in. Even if he was at home, he wouldn’t keep himself from indulging in three exact teaspoons of sugar and one half teaspoon of cream.

Not a drop more of each.

It was no surprise, then, that a man of his standards had asked the pretty young waitress in Rock Ridge to leave the cream on his table at Frank’s Diner that late morning.

“Is there anything else I can get you?” the pretty brunette asked.

Colonel Mayer glanced at her nametag briefly and smiled. “No thanks, Amanda.” As she began to walk away, he remembered something and grabbed her arm. “On second thought, wait a moment, please.”

The young waitress with the coffee pot in her hand stopped and turned back to him. She watched as the older gentleman took a picture from his back pocket and set it on the table.

“I’m looking for my son,” he said, tapping the face of the picture. “His name is Noah, he’s been gone for just over a week now. You haven’t seen him around, have you?”

Amanda studied the picture of the handsome boy with blue eyes and dark hair. She shook her head. “No, can’t say that I have. Have you tried the police?”

The Colonel took the picture and put it back in his pocket. “Well, that’s the thing, Amanda. You see, he’s not quite right in the head.” Colonel Mayer tapped a finger to his skull. “He suffers from hallucinations, things like that.”

Amanda put a hand to her face. “Oh, no,” she said.

“Yes, it’s very unfortunate,” the Colonel sighed. “This isn’t the first time he’s run away, but I’m afraid it’s a little different now.”

Amanda leaned in. “What do you mean?”

The Colonel’s face twitched and he cleared his throat to suppress a smile. “Can you keep a secret, Amanda?”

The young girl sat down opposite of her customer and set the coffee pot on the table. “Sure,” she said.

“Well,” Colonel Mayer said in a hushed voice. “You see, my boy tried to hurt a lady back home. He assaulted her, called her names.”

Amanda raised her eyebrows. “That’s awful,” she said.

The Colonel nodded. “Luckily, the woman didn’t press charges. The police weren’t involved, but it scared my boy so bad, he went off and ran away.”

Amanda lowered her voice to the tone of Colonel Mayer’s, as though she were being let in on a dark conspiracy. “Do you think he’ll hurt anyone else?” she asked.

The Colonel gave her a reassuring smile. “Oh, I don’t think it’ll come to that.” He looked around, making sure no one was watching. “But I don’t want to get the police involved. Noah’s a good boy, and I’d hate to see him get in anymore trouble, understand?”

Amanda nodded sympathetically. “I understand.”

Colonel Mayer took out the picture of Noah from his back pocket again and flipped it over. He plucked the pen from Amanda’s ear a bit too casually than she would have liked and began writing with it.

“If you see him,” the Colonel said, scribbling on the back of the picture, “I want you to call this number. Don’t let him know I’m looking for him, it might upset him and set him off, get it?”

Amanda took the picture as Colonel Mayer handed it to her. She read his name and number on the back and nodded. “I’ll keep my eyes peeled,” she said.

The Colonel smiled at her. “Thank you very much, my dear. As a father, you don’t know how much this means to me.”

Amanda smiled back. “Sure thing.” She stood from the table and put the picture in her apron pocket. “I hope you find him,” she said, taking her coffee pot.

The Colonel nodded. “Oh, and Amanda?” he asked.

She turned again.

Colonel Mayer held up his coffee mug. “You forgot my cream,” he said.

Amanda nodded. “Right, sorry.” She hurried to the back room for the saucer, unaware that the man’s intimidating presence was the reason she moved so quickly to get the cream for his coffee.

The Colonel leaned on the table and fiddled with his gold army ring. He studied the large, green jewel in the center and turned to the man sitting in the booth behind him. “Excuse me, sir?” he asked. “Where’s the nearest town from here?”

The old man with glasses looked up from his paper and pointed at the south end of the diner. “That’d be Oakdale, about five miles that way.”

Colonel smiled and nodded towards the man. “Thanks,” he said. He sat back in his seat, perfectly content to wait for his coffee, opting to taste the name of the town on his tongue, instead.

“Oakdale.”

He liked it.

“And this,” Maddie said, twirling around to Noah’s face as they entered the set kitchen of WOAK, “is our studio kitchen. You know—for Rachel Ray, Martha Stewart-type cooking shows.”

“Very practical,” Noah said.

“Yeah,” Luke said from beside Noah, “especially if you don’t want to keep your soda in the break room.” He moved to the fully-functional fridge and pulled two cans of soda. “Maddie, think fast!” he threw one in Maddie’s direction and she caught it with both hands.

“Five points, Snyder!” she laughed.

Luke nodded towards Noah. “I hope you remember how to catch, amnesia boy.”

He tossed the soda can in Noah’s direction. Suddenly, a flash of something came to Noah’s mind, a picture of someone throwing a vase across a blurry room. Noah watched as it smashed on the wall, saw as dozens of tiny pieces flew through the air as a woman screamed.

Noah blinked and the image was gone. He held up his hands at the oncoming soda can and cried out just before the can of soda hit the floor and exploded. Noah leaned back on the nearby desk and stared wide-eyed at the mess he had just make.

“I’m so sorry!” he said.

Maddie looked worriedly at her friend, but all Luke could do was stare at Noah.

“Well,” Luke said, “I guess he doesn’t remember how to catch.”

Maddie sprang into action and got a roll of paper towels from one of the nearly-empty cabinets. “It’s okay, don’t worry,” she said, rushing over to Noah.

“I-I don’t know what happened,” Noah said, holding out his arm. “I was ready to catch it, then all of a sudden, I had this vision of a woman—”

“What, like a memory?” Luke asked, moving around the kitchen to Noah.

Noah put a hand to the scar on his head and closed his eyes. He looked down at Maddie as she cleaned up the spilled soda and rushed to help her.

“Here,” he said, kneeling, “let me help you with that.”

“It’s okay, Noah—”

“I can’t believe I did that,” Noah said.

Maddie took Noah’s hand as he tried to help her mop up the mess with a paper towel. “It’s fine,” Maddie said, looking into his eyes.

Luke watched as the two seemingly had a moment together, a moment of lingering looks and sudden revelations. A moment he thought he had shared with Noah more than once at the farmhouse.

Noah dropped Maddie’s hand and stood slowly. He rubbed his head again and tried blinking away all the bad memories that surface behind his eyelids. “I don’t know what came over me,” he said.

“Do you want to go back to the farmhouse and lay down?” Luke asked.

Noah turned to him. “No,” he said. “If it’s alright with you guys, I’d like to stay.”

Luke smiled and tapped his shoulder. “Hey, of course it’s alright.” He instantly spotted his own flirtatious behavior and knelt next to Maddie to help her clean up. “No use crying over a little spilled soda, right?”

Maddie smiled at Luke and he avoided her eyes, embarrassed.

“Hey, guys, Eve wants to know—”

Luke and Maddie turned to the voice and Lauren appeared from the back office. Luke watched as the bubbly blonde looked Noah up and down. She smiled at him.

“Well, hello,” she said to Noah.

Noah smiled. “Hi,”

Maddie took the wet paper towels from Luke hand and brought them to the kitchen to be thrown away. “Lauren, will you tell Eve I’ll be there in a—”

“Eve’s just down the hall,” Lauren said to Maddie, waving in the opposite direction. The young girl didn’t take her eyes, or flirtatious smile off of Noah.

Luke stood and gave Maddie and amused grin. Maddie rolled her eyes and began walking towards the control rooms. “Fine,” she said, “I’ll talk to her myself.”

When she was gone, Lauren moved closer to Noah and put a hand on her hips. “So,” she said. “What’s your name?”

Luke cracked a smile at Lauren’s obvious behavior. Noah held out his hand for her to shake. “I’m Noah,” he said.

Lauren took his hand and leaned in closer. “I’m Lauren. I’m new here.”

“Really?” Noah asked. “Me too.”

Lauren giggled. “Well, we have so much in common already.”

“Uh, Lauren?” Luke asked.

“So where are you from, Noah?” Lauren asked, ignoring Luke.

Noah looked over his shoulder at Luke, but the man could only shrug and give him a ‘you’re-on-your-own’ look. Noah laughed nervously. “Well, that’s the thing,” he said. “I don’t really know.”

Instead of asking why, Lauren seemed to be more intrigued by his vague answer. She raised her eyebrows. “Ooh,” she said. “I like a little mystery.”

Luke rolled his eyes. “I have to go do some filing,” he said, placing his hand on Noah’s arm. “Lauren, will you keep him company while I’m gone?” As soon as he said, it Luke knew the bronze-skinned intern would have an obvious answer.

“You bet,” Lauren said, batting her eyelashes at Noah.

Noah turned to Luke as he walked away. “Uh, Luke?” he asked, pleading for help.

Luke waked backwards towards the office and smiled at Noah. “Have fun you two,” he said.

As Luke finished his filing, taking no more than a half hour, he wondered what Noah and Lauren were talking about as they sat at the round conference table near the kitchen together. He watched out the door and tried to listen in on their conversation, but their voices were lowered to a hushed whisper and Luke was at a loss.

When the filing was done, Luke went to the kitchen and smiled down at the two. “Hey,” he said.

Lauren and Noah looked up at him. “Hey,” Noah said, “done already?”

Luke felt a pang of irritation in his gut, surmising by Noah’s lighthearted remark that he had wanted more time alone with Lauren.

“What can I say?” Luke asked. “Filing is my life.”

Lauren stood from the table and smiled at Noah. “Well I’m going back to work,” she said. She turned to Luke. “Will you show me again where the archives room is?”

Luke nodded. “Sure,” he said.

“You guys go ahead,” Noah said. “I’ll walk around for a bit.”

“Are you sure?” Luke asked.

Noah stood from the table and nodded. “Yeah, no problem. I’ll holler if I get lost.” He smiled at his friend and Luke felt his stomach drop to his knees.

“Alright,” he said, turning to Lauren, “let’s go.”

As they walked down the hall to the archives room, Lauren looked over her shoulder to make sure Noah wasn’t within earshot of their conversation and sighed loudly. “Man, all the cute guys are gay,” she said. “It’s not fair.”

Luke looked at her and grinned. “What do you mean?’ he asked.

“I mean, it’s really tough he has amnesia,” she continued, oblivious to Luke’s question. “That’s some freaky Twilight Zone stuff, you know?”

Luke stopped her in the hallway and looked at her. “Wait, what are you saying?” he asked.

Lauren waved her hand at him. “Oh, it’s okay,” she said. “Noah told me everything—how you and Maddie saved him, how he can’t remember anything about his past.”

“But you said . . .” Luke paused, feeling as though he had misinterpreted Lauren’s comments. “You said something about Noah being gay, am I wrong?”

Lauren nodded as if it were no big deal. “Yeah,” she said.

Luke blinked at her, stunned. He could hardly believe it. “Did he tell you that?” he asked.

Lauren gave him a look like it was the most obviously thing in the world. “Sweetie, he didn’t have to tell me anything. I threw everything I had at that guy, and the only men who refuse me are either married or gay. And since I don’t see a ring on his finger . . .”

Luke laughed, flabbergasted at Lauren’s outlandish claim. “So just because he didn’t flirt back with you, he’s automatically gay, right?”

Lauren shrugged and continued walking down the hall to the archives room. She stopped in front of the door. “That,” she said, “and the guy couldn’t shut up about you.” Lauren opened the door to the archives room and walked in, leaving Luke alone and stunned in the hallway.

“Wait,” Luke said, following her inside. “He talked about me?”

Lauren smiled as she taped the labels to the black video casings, looking for the right ones to take off the shelf. “He said you were nice and funny and that he was really grateful that you were letting him stay at your house.”

Luke grinned slightly at the thought of Noah talking about him so highly, then gathered himself and frowned. “He only said that because I helped save his life. I’m sure he said lots of nice things about Maddie, too.”

Lauren plucked a video cassette from the shelf and looked at Luke. “He said she was a ‘good friend.’”

Luke raised his eyebrows. As much as he wanted to take Lauren’s gossip with a grain of salt, he couldn’t help but wonder if what she was saying was the real thing and not something blown out of proportion. He shook his head. “Yeah, but that doesn’t make him gay,” Luke said.

Lauren took another video off the shelf. “Whatever,” she said. “All I know is, when the guy talked about you, his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree.”

Luke rolled his eyes and tried to suppress the secret feeling of giddiness in his heart. Even if it wasn’t true, even if Lauren was just shooting her mouth off to get some attention, the thought of Noah saying those things about him—not to mention the idea that the man, himself, might be gay—made Luke’s heart swell with happiness.

“Anyway,” Lauren said, her voice bringing Luke back down the earth. “You should look into having Noah see a hypnotherapist for his amnesia.” She pushed the video cassettes into Luke’s arms and he followed her out of the room.

“Wait, what?” Luke asked.

“Hynotherapy,” Lauren said, leading the way. “My cousin swears by it. She had some kind of traumatic experience in her childhood, and the therapist helped her unblock it.”

“Are you serious?” Luke asked with a laugh. “Sounds like something of a sci-fi movie.”

“It’s perfectly legit,” Lauren said, opening the door to an office for Luke. She let him in and followed him in the room. “People get hypnosis for all kinds of things nowadays.”

Luke set the videos down on the desk and looked at her. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m not sure Noah would go for that kind of thing.”

Lauren shrugged. “It’s worth a shot, isn’t it? Doesn’t he deserve every chance he can get to have his memories back?”

Luke thought about that. Judging by Noah’s flashes of what may or may not have happened in his past, he was worried that, whatever hypnosis would uncover for Noah, it would be doing him more harm than good.

“Just relax,”

Luke snorted at the woman’s words, at how cliché they were even in an unconventional setting as a hypnotherapist’s office. Holden gave his son a look as he sat next to him and Luke wiped the smirk from his face. He watched from the other side of the room as Noah sat opposite of the doctor on a leather couch with his eyes closed.

The red-headed, youngish doctor sat comfortably in her matching leather armchair. The room smelled like mahogany and the walls were peppered with fancy degrees and soothing pictures of lakes and mountains.

It was Wednesday, two days after Lauren suggested that Noah try hypnotherapy. At first, Noah had been reluctant, but when Luke’s family expressed their interest in seeing how it would work, they convinced him to give it a try. Maddie stayed behind at WOAK to pick up Luke’s slack as he accompanied Noah to the doctor’s office, and Holden joined his son to make sure nothing bad would happen.

“Clear your mind,” the doctor said to Noah. “Release all of the tension in your body.”

Luke watched as Noah seemed to be getting into it. The man’s body relaxed and his eyes darted back and forth slowly behind their lids.

“Relax your neck,” the doctor said. “Relax your shoulders, then your torso, all the way down to your toes.”

Luke leaned over to his father and whispered, “Is she hypnotizing him or giving him a virtual massage?”

Holden shushed his son and continued monitoring the session.

“Are you relaxed?” the doctor asked Noah.

“Yes,” Noah said softly.

“I’m going to count to three, Noah,” the doctor said. “And as I’m counting, I want you to stay relaxed. Keep your mind clear, and focus on your breathing.”

Noah made the slightest nod with his head. “Okay,” he said.

“Alright,” the doctor said. She leaned forward in her chair. “One . . . keep your body relaxed.”

Luke shifted in his chair and kept an unsteady eye on Noah.

“Two,” the doctor said. “Inhale and exhale.”

Holden looked to his son but Luke only shrugged slightly.

“Three.”

A pregnant silence filled the air as the doctor called off the last number. Luke studied Noah’s tranquil face for any sign of distress, but the man just seemed to be in a deep state of sleep.

The doctor took a small tape recorder from her coat pocked and turned in on. She set it on her lap. “Noah?” she asked quietly. “Can you hear me?”

Noah waited for a beat before answering. It was as if he was in a different place, listening to a voice in his head rather than a doctor sitting a few feet away from him.

“Yes.” Noah said.

“Noah, I want you to go back to the night Luke and Maddie found you,” the doctor said. “Do you remember?”

Another short pause. Noah nodded. “Yes, I remember,” he said.

“I want you to go back to the moment before they found you,” the doctor said. “What do you see?”

Luke watched breathlessly as Noah searched his memory from behind closed eyes. Noah’s face suddenly twisted in confusion.

“I see . . .” Noah whispered. “A car.”

The doctor nodded. “A car—good. What else?”

“I’m in the car,” Noah said.

The pretty doctor glanced at Luke and focused back on her patient. “Noah, I told you to go back to the moment before Luke and Maddie found you—”

“He’s angry,” Noah said.

Silence filled the room. “Who?” the doctor asked. “Who’s angry?”

“He’s upset,” Noah said. “He’s not saying anything, just driving . . . just driving down the road.”

“Is this the same road Luke and Maddie found you on?” the doctor asked.

His eyes, gray and mean and angry, accusing Noah of something . . . of seeing something he wasn’t supposed to see. His hands, those large, rough hands on the wheel of the car, driving through the woods on a lone stretch of road—

“He knows,” Noah said. “He knows . . .”

“Do you know where the man is taking you, Noah?” the doctor asked.

His hands, reaching out to grab Noah’s shirt collar, to threaten him or scare him or probably both. Gray eyes, dark road, black forest—

“He’s pulling into the woods,” Noah said. “He’s going to do it here.” The panic rose in Noah’s voice and all at once, Luke felt afraid for him.

“Calm down,” the doctor said. “Tell me what’s happening.”

“Oh my God, he’s going to do it here!” Noah cried, squeezing his eyes tighter. “He’s going to kill me out here!”

“Noah—”

A sudden stop. The bile rising in Noah’s throat. This is it, he’s going to do it here, here’s going to do it here, he’s going to kill his only—

“No, let go of me!” Noah cried, flinching in his seat.

“Noah, tell me what’s happening.” The doctor said.

“He’s pulling me out of the truck,” Noah said, breathing heavily.

Luke began to stand up, when Holden put his hand on his son’s arm to steady him. “Just wait,” Holden said.

Noah jerked his face to the side as if what was happening in his brain were happening to him in real life. “Stop! Don’t do this!”

The gray eyes and rough hands push Noah to the ground. Earth and pines fill Noah’s senses, the smell of his own sweat. Run away, run away, run away—

“He’s chasing me,” Noah said. His breathing became erratic now, his own body trying to keep up with the memories his brain was uncovering.

“Who is chasing you, Noah?” The doctor asked. “Can you see his face?”

“Can’t look back,” Noah said. “He’ll catch me, he’s faster . . .”

A tear fell down Noah’s face and Luke’s heart all but broke in a million pieces. “We have to stop,” he said to his father. “This isn’t right!”

Falling, falling, falling down a hill. Must’ve tripped somewhere. Falling right . . . on . . . a—

“Ah!” Noah cried, putting a hand to the scar on his head. “I hit my head on a rock.”

“Stay with me, Noah,” the doctor said.

“I’m dizzy,” Noah said. “The pain . . .”

“Is the man still chasing you?” the doctor asked.

“He’s gone,” Noah breathed. “He’s gone, he’s gone, he’s—”

Crawling to his feet, have to get away. Almost out, almost escaped, there’s only a few trees now, the bend in the road can’t be far ahead. Turn to see, turn to see if the hands and eyes are following him and there’s a glimmer of silver and—

“Ahh!” Noah cried out, clutching his side where his stitches had been.

“Stop!” Luke yelled, standing.

“Noah!” the doctor said.

“He stabbed me!” Noah cried. “A hunting knife . . . he stabbed me!”

“Stop this right now!” Luke yelled. He rushed to Noah’s side and knelt next to him.

“He’s got me!” Noah said, tears streaming down his face. “He’s going to kill me . . .”

“Can’t you make it stop?” Luke yelled at the doctor. “He’s in pain!”

The eyes, the gray eyes that shine in the moonlight. Blood on those hands, those rough hands with a gold ring and green jewel. Military hands that have killed countless numbers of the enemy—

“I’m sorry!” Noah yelled. “I’m sorry, I promise . . . I promise not to tell!”

“Noah, I’m going to count backwards from three and you’re going to wake up,” the doctor said.

That fist, that fist with the gold ring and green jewel meeting Noah’s face, punishing him for something. Punishing him over and over again—

“Stop!” Noah cried out.

“One,” the doctor said.

“Let me go!”

“Two,” said the doctor.

“Luke!” Noah screamed.

“THREE!”

Noah opened his eyes and let out a deep breath as though his head and been underwater. He looked around frantically, forgetting for a moment where he was. He bolted up from the couch and turned to run towards the door, until Luke caught him in his arms and held him tightly.

“It’s okay!” Luke said. “It’s okay, you’re safe.”

Noah embraced him and let out a sob. The doctor looked at Holden and the man watched the two boys helplessly, completely at a loss as to what to do.

“Please don’t make me do that again!” Noah cried on Luke’s shoulder.

“Shh,” Luke said soothingly, rubbing his back. “It’s alright. You don’t have to go through that again.” Luke looked up at his father beyond Noah’s shoulder. “Let’s take him home,” he said.
